Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that with the exception of in the San Filipe area where there was some thunderbumper activity yesterday morning the Sea has been quiet for the past 24 hours. No clouds to speak of and mostly sunshine after the morning clouds burnt off.
This morning this image is showing the skies to be clear over the Sea of Cortez.
Looking south to the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera I can see that most of central and southern Mexico has had thunderbumper activity to some extent in the past 24 hours. Along the west coast the storms were mostly inland but the coast is overcast from Puerto Vallarta south.
Calm winds are forecast for the Gulf of Tehuantepec so looking out into the Eastern Pacific basin and the ITCZ/Monsoon trough I can see it is fairly active this morning.
We have an item in our Tropical Kitchen this morning. It is invest 96 Echo and will most likely develop into tropical storm Flossie in a couple of days. Right now she is in her infancy and around 600 miles SW of Acapulco this morning. The early forecast track indicates that this system will move WNW for its lifetime and not be a threat to land.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where monsoonal moisture is moving up the state from the south. The southern Sierras will start to see some thunderbumper activity today and by tomorrow the entire Sierra range including the foothills will start to see showers and thunderbumpers in the afternoons.
In northern California the coast and inland valleys have only a slight chance of showers or thumpers today.
In southern California it was raining off and on in many locations yesterday. There is a very moist subtropical air mass that will remain over southern California through today. They can expect showers as well as scattered thunderbumpers mainly over the mountains and deserts. Locally heavy rainfall will be possible with these heavy showers and thunderbumpers. Flash flooding and debris flows are also a good possibility through tomorrow. Warmer and drier conditions will develop for Wednesday and Thursday with a chance of some more thunderbumpers in the mountains and deserts.
This image is showing a long line of thunderbumpers stretching from along the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain ranges in Mexico up through Arizona, Nevada and into northern California this morning.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence in general the southerly winds will continue through the 3-day forecast period. That being said the forecast also calls for light to moderate NE winds from San Francisquito south to Concepción Bay today. I don’t have much confidence in the wind direction forecast. I’d have to put my money on SE today especially in Concepción Bay. We’ll see?
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: light to moderate SE winds for the next 2 days picking up just a bit on Wednesday.
The central Sea: The Guaymas area Light SW today and tomorrow and then light SE on Wednesday.
The Baja side: The forecast calls for moderate NE, I’m thinking SE. We’ll see:
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands: light to moderate SE today and tomorrow and then light SW on Wednesday.
The East Cape: mostly light SE for the 3-day forecast period.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan, moderate SW for the next 3 days. Puerto Vallarta and Cabo Corrienties light NW and south of the cape light SW for the next 3 days.
