Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that low that has hugged the Fence for several days in now centered just off the coast of northern Baja. Water vapor imagery is showing a rather tight swirl. The nasty little low combined with the normal monsoonal moisture is giving cause to some serious thunderbumper activity in Arizona, the California deserts and now southern California. Flash flood advisories are posted for the many locations in the southwest as well as southern California this morning.
This satellite image is showing the far northern end of the Sea to have some remnant clouds from thunderbumper in the area last night. The rest of the Sea looks to be cloud free.
Looking south of the cape to the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera this morning I can see that yesterday afternoon and evening there were numerous thunderbumper working along the coast that have pretty much dissipated this morning. There is however pretty much solid overcast from Cabo Corrienties south this morning.
Looking out into the Eastern Pacific basin I can see some scattered showers around that Tropical Wave that is now out around 115W. It is slowly moving into cooler waters and will continue to pose no threat for tropical development.
Again this morning there is nothing cooking in our Tropical Kitchen. There are two Tropical Wave off to the east that are headed or way. One is still way out around 51W, but the other is in the western Caribbean this morning bringing showers and thunderbumpers to Nicaragua, western Honduras, eastern Guatemala and El Salvador. It will most likely enter the Eastern Pacific basin tomorrow around 10N which would put in within the ITCZ/Monsoon trough. There is a lot of subtropical moisture pooling down there but so far no lows are forecast to develop at this time. We’ll see?
OK, that’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where high pressure is keeping northern California, Oregon and Washington dry this morning.
The southern part of the California will see cloudiness starting in Central California and then from the LA basin south monsoonal moisture combined with several weak upper level troughs will be bringing thunderbumpers and showers to the area today through Monday. The thunderbumper activity will continue in the mountains and deserts into Tuesday night. High pressure will build over the region the second half of next week.
For extreme southern California subtropical moisture will continue to stream across the region through Monday with cooler conditions prevailing as well as periods of showers and isolated thunderbumpers. Localized flash flooding may also be possible. The threat of showers and thunderbumpers will continue in the mountains and deserts on Tuesday as moisture lingers over the regions. Drier and warmer weather will develop mid week.
Looking now over to the southwest where the 24 hour loop showed some serious thunderbumper activity in Arizona for the past 24 hours. It looks like that will continue today with low pressure over northern Baja providing a moist east to southeast flow again today. This flow will increase the chances of showers and thunderbumpers with the potential of heavy rain and flash flooding. Things should start to dry out tomorrow as high pressure builds back over the region. Next weekend should again see increased rain chances.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like the most of the Sea will be seeing sunshine today after a few morning clouds dissipate.
Wind wise, in general, the SE winds will continue for the 3-day forecast period. The exception will be the northern crossing where moderate NE winds are forecast for tomorrow and Tuesday.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: light to moderate SE winds for the next 3 days.
The central Sea: SSE in the mid teens today and then light NE winds for Monday and Tuesday. I have to say I’m a bit iffy about the NE wind forecast. Only one of the three models I look at are showing the northern crossing to have NE winds on Monday and Tuesday. Well, we’ll see?
The rest of the central Sea light to moderate SE winds for the 3-day forecast period.
The southern Sea: the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands should see light to moderate southerlies over the 3-day forecast period. Probably SW today and SE Monday and Tuesday.
The East Cape: not much more than 10-12 knots over the next 3 days. Today from the ENE then SE of the next two days.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan mid to high teens from the SW for the next 3 days. Puerto Vallarta south, light winds, less than 10 mostly from the SW.
