Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that there has been considerable thunderbumper activity in the Sea last night. Storms developing back in the mountains east of Lost Mochas and in the Sonoran desert moved west out into the Sea. At 5am this image is showing that there were still a few still active in the Sea. One is just north and west of Los Mochas and it extends north up the center of the Sea to Guaymas.
There is a south/north flow from south-central Mexico north to Colorado that has been evident for the past week. So as these storms develop they start to move north and then as they get larger they extend into the Sea.
It’s possible that within these cells that moved into the Sea last night and this morning there could have been some that had chubbasco winds. The Ascatt satellite showed strong winds just west of Los Mochas this morning. I really expected to see some lightning around 4 this morning; instead heavy dark bottomed clouds and then the winds picked up to around 15 from the SE and have been in those ranges since then.
It looks like it will be late morning before the skies clear over the Sea this morning.
Looking now south to the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera where I can see there has been a lot of thunderbumper activity around Puerto Vallarta. South of Cabo Corrienties there has been very little activity.
There will be a weak Tropical wave moving into Central America today and emerge into the Pacific most likely tomorrow. A couple of low are progged to form in the ITCZ/Monsoon trough in the pacific early next week. We could have something cooking in our Tropical Kitchen then. Meantime nothing for this weekend.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where there will be no great chances in the weather pattern for the coming week. There is a low that will remain parked off the west coast next week. The only changes in the weather will be subtle with just minor changes in the daily highs.
In southern California they could see some isolated showers and thunderbumpers in the mountains this weekend and then return Wednesday through the end of the week.
Temperatures will continue to be in the low to mid 70s all week, and the surf is up in the southland. Surfer dudes and dudettes will be seeing sets with one head waves through tomorrow.
Looking now over to the southwest where this image is showing that most of the thunderbumper activity took place to the south of the Fence yesterday and last night. SW Arizona has some residual cloudiness from the storms over Sonora last night and this morning. The thunderbumper activity will diminish somewhat over the weekend then next week a weather system will move in from the east bringing moisture and instability and a good chance of more thunderbumpers all next week.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like in general the Sea will continue to see moderate southerlies over the weekend.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: light to moderate SE winds for the 3-day forecast period.
The central Sea: The Sonoran coast including Guaymas will see moderate SW winds today and tomorrow then SE on Monday.
The Baja side: moderate NE or SE (probably a little of both) today, then SE Sunday and Monday.
The southern Sea: the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands light SE today and tomorrow and then moderate SW on Monday.
The East Cape: light SE over the next 3 days.
The Mexican Riviera: light winds for the next 3 days. Mazatlan SW. Cabo Corrienties NW, south of Cabo Corrienties mostly SW.
