Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that thunderbumpers building over in Chihuahua and Sonora moved NW during the night and while some moved up into the Tucson area a few drifted over the Sea north of the northern crossing. Lightning could be seen from the Baja coast in the early morning hours.
Here in Concepción Bay there were thunderbumpers also working back in the mountains in the early morning hours. The satellite images showed several hot cells on the peninsula from around La Paz south this morning.
Looking south to the cape region where we have former hurricane Erick, now a tropical storm, passing around 88 miles southwest of the cape this morning. Tropical storm warnings have been posted at the cape and south to La Paz on the Sea and around Todo Santos on the Pacific side. Water vapor imagery is showing a lot of moisture in the spiral moving past the cape. I’d expect to see several inches of rain in the region today and some flash flooding in the arroyos. That being said the Baja Insider said this storm would probably be a “Non Event” for the cape. A Web cam at the cape showed rain, dark clouds and virtually no winds. Since midnight the highest wind gust was 10 knots at the reporting station at the cape.
So this “Non Event” is the only item in our Tropical Kitchen this morning. Erick has already entered colder water and will continue to deteriorate daily for the next several days to be a remnant low within 36 hours.
There are several Tropical Waves moving across the Atlantic this morning but the only lows in our hood are well out along the ITCZ/Monsoon trough so it looks like nothing new will be cooking in the kitchen for the next 48 hours.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where high pressure lingers keeping the west hot. The high is forecast to build and move NE around Wednesday.
In southern California there a small chance of some showers and thunderbumpers late in the week mainly in the mountains. Temperatures will be a few degrees above normal.
Looking now over to the southwest where I have to rely on the weather channel for Tucson as DLH’s station is down. The Weather Channel said that it was raining in Tucson this morning. This is consistent with the forecast that’s saying there will be adequate moisture in the region to bring scattered thunderbumpers through tomorrow then another surge of moisture will lead to increased thunderbumper activity starting Wednesday and continuing into the weekend.
That’s what is gong on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like there will be sufficient gradient in the northern and central Sea today to produce strong winds in the 24-28 knot ranges.
The La Paz and East Cape are looking at 35 knot winds. So we are getting a double whammy today and it will all be southerlies.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: 16-20 today and tomorrow from the SE and diminishing to light SE on Wednesday.
The central Sea: Santa Rosalia to Concepción Bay SE 24-28 knots today, diminishing to around 20 tomorrow and 15 on Wednesday.
The southern Sea: the islands and the San Lorenzo Channel could see east winds today to around 23 knots diminishing to the mid teens from the SW on Tuesday and Wednesday. La Paz is forecast to see 35 today then light S or SW on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The East Cape: ballpark 35 today then light SE tomorrow and Wednesday.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan will see 20 knots this afternoon and the rest moderate southerlies over the 3-day forecast period.
