Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that the Sea is seeing some cloudiness this morning that is moving over from moderate thunderstorm activity over in Sonora last night. This should burn off by mid morning.
Looking south to the cape region we have our latest hurricane, Erick, just west of Cabo Corrienties this morning and now moving NW to pass the cape this evening as a tropical storm. Tropical storm advisories have been posted for the cape and as far south as La Paz in the Sea and Todo Santos on the outside for the next 24 hours. Tropical storm warnings have been discontinued east of Manzanillo and a Hurricane watch has been discontinued from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrienties in favor of a tropical storm watch as the storm moves away from the mainland toward the cape this morning. I’d expect to see some cloudiness from this system as it gets closer to the cape and then moving along the outside for a couple of days. We’ll see?
In out Tropical Kitchen we have the remnants of tropical storm Dalila. She is just barely keeping ahead of Erick. It looks like they could merge in colder waters in a couple of days to the west of the peninsula.
Further south the models are showing a series of weak lows forming along the ITCZ/Monsoon trough over the next several days. The impact will be increased areas of showers and thunderbumpers near the coast.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where the Great Northwest and northern California continue to cool today, but the southwest will see another hot day with highs above 100 degrees. Tucson 104, Yuma 111, and Needles 116 this afternoon.
In southern California a trough of low pressure off the coast and decreasing high pressure over the southwest will bring drying across southern California through early next week. Temperatures will be close to July normals.
Looking now over to the southwest where there is sufficient moisture in the region to yield isolated-scattered showers and thunderbumpers mostly from Tucson eastward this afternoon and evening. There was mention that a potential Sea of Cortez surge from Hurricane Erick will bring an increase in thunderbumper activity Tuesday afternoon and evening.
In all the reports I read this morning this was the only place that referred to a surge moving up the Sea of Cortez. I’m not exactly sure if they are referring to a moisture plume or a physical wave/surge moving up the Sea. I have to assure a moisture plume.
OK, that’s what is happening to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence we have a hurricane approaching the cape region this morning with all the joy that a hurricane brings. High surf, high winds, copious amounts of rain, and tin roofs flying around. I noted that all the hotels at the cape have gone from live video to a picture of a beautiful sunny day. Don’t want to scare off the tourists.
For the rest of the Sea the skies are relatively clear this morning, including the cape. As far as the winds, in general brisk to strong southerlies today and tomorrow and then back to the moderate southerlies on Tuesday.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: light NE today, strong SE tomorrow and moderate SE on Tuesday.
The central Sea: strong southerlies to 20 today and tomorrow then moderate southerlies on Tuesday.
The southern Sea: Puerto Escondido, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands: 17-25 knot southerlies today then light to moderate southerlies on Monday and Tuesday.
The East Cape: strong SSE18-23 today and tomorrow then light on Tuesday.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan to 27 today, 18 tomorrow and 14 on Tuesday. Puerto Vallarta, strong southerlies today then light NW Monday and Tuesday. Cabo Corrienties has tropical storm advisories out so winds to 48-63 knots are possible today and this evening. South of Cabo Corrienties moderate SE winds for the 3-day forecast period.
