Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that Sonora was quite active yesterday afternoon with a MCS’s (mesoscale convective system) developing the length of the state. A MCS’s is a complex of thunderbumpers that become organized on a scale larger than the individual thunderbumpers but smaller that a hurricane or tropical storm.
It looks like this system broke up early this morning with just a few of the remnant clouds from this system moving over the far northern end of the Sea.
Of note: this system moved cells up into SW Arizona yesterday afternoon and besides the rain and lightning they had strong winds in the Tucson area with one cell knocking down a power pole and another picking up a storage container and tossing it a couple hundred yards.
This morning the central Sea looks to be pretty much clouds free. The southern Sea at the cape area is starting to see some clouds from tropical storm Dalila. A blogger in La Paz is forecasting thunderbumpers in the region as the storm passes.
Looking south to the Mexican Riviera it looks like Dalila is bringing rain to Cabo Corrienties and south to Manzanillo this morning. The entire west coast south to Central America is very active with thunderbumpers both off shore and on land this morning.
Looking in our Tropical Kitchen this morning we have on the front burner sister Dalila, a tropical storm. She is around 230 miles west of Cabo Corrienties and 345 miles south of the cape this morning. It’s now doubtful that Dalila will become a hurricane. The forecast shows her gaining little strength in the next 36-48 hours and then gradually weakening as a second storm sneaks up from the south in her wake.
That second system we’ll put on the back burner for now but it developed yesterday a couple of hundred miles SW of the Gulf of Tehuantepec. It’s, of course, in the birthing grounds for our tropical storms and within a couple of days will crank up and start moving NW eventually catching up with Dalila and engulfing her remnants. So sayith the prognosticators. We’ll see? The name will be Erick, our first himicane of the season.
Looking out into the Atlantic for Tropical Waves heading our way I can see three this morning. Way out, there is one at 29W, another at 51W and one crossing Haiti this morning.
OK, that’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where the heat wave continues and is forecast to remain hot well into the week with temperatures in many locations in triple digits. The responsible upper high will drift slowly west starting today and tomorrow with cooler temperatures arriving finally on Thursday however not really cooling off until Friday. In the meantime it looks like a degree of two of cooling every day until the weekend.
There will still be thunderbumpers in the Sierras with many dry lightning strikes so fire danger is problem all over the west this week.
For southern California the hot temperatures are expected to persist for inland areas through mid week. By the time the 4th of July rolls around temperatures should be near seasonal averages for areas west of the mountains. The ridge of high pressure will significantly weaken by this weekend as that weak low out of the Gulf of Alaska moves into the Great Northwest.
Looking now over to the southwest where the monsoon has arrived with gusto. As I mentioned there have been heavy cells dumping lot of rain and high winds in various locations in Arizona including the Tucson area. The monsoon should continue this afternoon with moisture moving up from the south. The moisture will moderate the heat and temperatures will drop from triple digits to the high 90s starting tomorrow.
Well, that’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like we will be having moderate winds today and tomorrow and then around 20 on the 4th.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: light to moderate NE today, Light to moderate SE tomorrow and then 21 knots on the 4th.
The central Sea: light NE today. Moderate SE tomorrow and around 20 from the SE on the 4th.
The southern Sea: light to moderate southerlies over the 3-day forecast period.
The East Cape: Same thing with light to moderate southerlies for the next 3 days.
The Mexican Riviera: in general, moderate SW winds for the Riviera for the next 3 days.

73s Y’all
