Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see the former hurricane Cosme has drawn a blanket of clouds over the Sea of Cortez. The tropical storm’s outer swirl extends well into Sonora this morning. This morning this image is showing the Sea from around the Bay of LA to have overcast skies and even though the storm is breaking up clouds will continue to swirl around this low for most of the day today.
Looking now along the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera this morning I can see that it is pretty much solid overcast south to Guatemala this morning with numerous thunderbumpers building along the coast during the night and early morning hours.
The Tehuantepec however is cloud free this morning with again light winds in their forecast.
Looking now in our Tropical Kitchen where we have tropical storm Cosme around 556 miles SW of the cape and moving west at around 5 mph. This image is showing the storm breaking up with the low and the mid-lever center of Cosme decoupled with winds in the 40 knot ranges. It should be plutoed to a remnant low by this afternoon and the track should be a bit more to the west as it reaches cooler waters.
As we kick one storm out of the kitchen another is waiting to come in. A couple hundred miles SW of Acapulco a low has popped up. It has already been designated at invest 96 Echo. It is expected to be more conductive for tropical development in a couple of days. Most likely this will be our next tropical storm. Should that happen the name would be Dalila. Wasn’t she the chick that betrayed Sampson by cutting off his hair? The name could imply that this could be a nasty storm. We’ll see?
Lastly looking over into the Atlantic for Tropical Waves headed our way. I can see three. One is way out around 46W, another is moving through the central Caribbean near Hispaniola this morning. The other is moving into the western Caribbean and bringing rain to western Cuba.
Well, that’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where high pressure building over the Great Basin has brought on a heat wave to the western conus.
Triple digit temperatures from Oregon to San Diego in the inland valleys. Coastal areas will be spared the extreme heat due to a marine layer along the west coast will moderate temperatures near the coast.
The heat wave will last until late next week when that low that’s parked in the Gulf of Alaska moves south and bumps the low back to the east.
Along with the high heat advisories issued by the National Weather Service there are the red flag fire warnings. This weekend will most likely see the hottest days of the year. So the forecast for the west is hot and dry and be careful with matches.
Looking over to the southwest where their forecast is also hot and dry into next week with this weekend seeing temperatures around 120 in the lower deserts. In the higher elevations say 3-5 thousand feet temperatures will be in the low 100s. Forecasters in Arizona are still saying manaña again (that’s sometime next week, maybe) for any monsoon moisture to creep into the region. This weekend they could see some cloudiness from both New Mexico and Colorado.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the fence it looks like a couple of days of light to moderate northerlies then on Saturday the winds swing to the south again. They should be in the moderate ranges.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The Northern Sea: light NE today, Moderate NE tomorrow then around 20 knots on Saturday from the SE.
The central Sea: moderate winds over the 3-day forecast period. Today and tomorrow from the NE, SE on Saturday.
The southern Sea: the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands: moderate SW for the next 3 days.
The East Cape: in general light winds for the 3-day forecast period. Today from the NW, tomorrow and Saturday SE.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan will be around 20 NW today then moderate southerlies for Friday and Saturday. Puerto Vallarta region to Cabo Corrienties: light to moderate NW for the next 3 days. Manzanillo south mostly light SW winds.
