Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see the Sea of Cortez has had another 24 hours of cloudless skies. Pretty much the same for along the west coast of Mexico.
Looking out into the Eastern Pacific basin along the ITCZ/Monsoon trough I can see there is quite of bit of convection along the zone this morning. There is a weak low embedded within the zone near the west coast of Costa Rica and is forecast to drift west out along the zone through mid week. This will increase the convection in the zone and increase the gradient through the Tehuantepec isthmus to produce 25 knot winds there tomorrow morning. As the low moves further west it will induce winds in the Gulf to around 30 knots. The forecast is a bit iffy on the timetable but ballpark mid week.
That’s what is going on in our hood. So looking now north to the west coast of America of America where the storm door is open for the Great Northwest. Rain, sometimes heavy is in the forecast for Washington, Oregon and as far south as extreme Northern California until late next week.
The rest of California is under building high pressure that will continue until Monday warming the state up as much as 10 to 20 degrees above normal. Around mid week a low is forecast to approach the coast and cool things back down again.
Looking now over to the southwest where the weather is being influenced by a meandering low over northwestern Sonora. It should move off to the east today but in the meantime it could give cause to some thunderbumpers in the higher elevations. Temperatures will continue to heat up with highs near 100 degrees in the lower deserts and the 90s elsewhere. Temperatures will continue to climb with Tucson reaching the 100 degree mark later in the week.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence the models I use are not all in agreement with what the winds will be in the northern Sea today. I’m going with the higher values and say strong to the high 20s to a bit south of the middrifts. By the northern crossing region the winds should be in the moderate ranges today.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea today: strong northerlies to the high 20s today. The models are still showing Puerto Panesco to continue to see those high winds tomorrow but the rest of the northern Sea should see moderate northerlies tomorrow and then the northern Sea moderate southerlies on Tuesday.
The central Sea: moderate winds over the 3-day forecast period. Today and tomorrow northerlies and then on Tuesday from the south.
The southern Sea: the San Lorenzo channel, La Paz and nearby islands: light to moderate ESE for the 3-day forecast period.
The East Cape: light northerlies today, moderate SE tomorrow and then moderate NE on Tuesday.
The Sonoran Passage: Mostly moderate winds for the next 3 days. Today from the W, then WSW for Monday and Tuesday.
The Mexican Riviera: the same as it has been for the past week. Moderate winds from the WNW to the north of Cabo Corrienties and moderate SW to the south of Cabo Corrienties.
Temperatures are starting to rise. The sunrise temperatures were up across the board this morning. We should see temperatures in the Sea in the 90s today and increase all next week. The SST (Sea Surface Temperatures) are also inching up in the Sea. Spring has sprung and summer is not that far away.
