.Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that the southern jet, our Pineapple Express, has pretty much dried up in the past 12 hours. There is still a lot of convection building along the ITCZ/Monsoon trough but with no steerage the clouds migrate pretty much due north. The normal west/east flow in the basin will slowly move these clouds toward Baja but most will dissipate before reaching landfall.
This morning the skies are clear over the Baja peninsula. Looking south the skies are also clear all along the west coast of Mexico.
Looking further south to the Gulf of Tehuantepec where it looks like this weekend’s Tehuantepecker will be the third storm force wind event across the Gulf this year. 30-35 knot winds are already blowing across the Gulf and as the gradient between the Caribbean and the Pacific tighten the winds will increase to around 50 knots by tomorrow afternoon and continue through early Sunday.
That’s what’s going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where it’s no surprise to see the Great Northwest getting wet again this morning.
Northern California will be dry today then tomorrow a wet system will bring light rain to the northern end of the state. Next week several systems will moving through northern California bringing mostly light rain. Snow levels will be very high.
Southern California will be fair and warm into the weekend. About the middle of next week a low pressure trough will develop along the west coast cooling things off a bit and bringing a chance of rain and snow to the mountains when it moves ashore.
Looking now over to the southwest where in general it will be dry and warm into mid next week when a low will move in from the west and bring a slight chance of showers in the later part of the week to the southwest.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence the good news is: the Sea of Cortez will have abundant sunshine today. The bad new is the 30 knot winds will continue today. Tomorrow they will diminish to the low 20s then on Sunday it looks like light easterlies.
Across the long fetch areas in the central Sea the seas will build to around 11 feet today and diminish to around 8 feet by tomorrow morning. On Sunday even though the winds will be light there will still be enough of a swell to make the northern crossing uncomfortable.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: NW winds in the mid 20s today, mid teens tomorrow and light winds from the SE on Sunday.
The central Sea: 30K NW winds continue today. Low 20s tomorrow and light NE winds on Sunday.
The southern Sea: From Puerto Escondido south to the cape. Today mid 20s, high teens tomorrow and light NE winds on Sunday.
The outside passage ballpark 20 knots for most of the passage today and a bit less over the weekend.
Along the Sonoran coast from Mazatlan to Guaymas: around 17 knots in Mazatlan this afternoon building to 30 at Guaymas. Tomorrow the mid teens building to the mid 20s at Guaymas. Sunday mid teen all the way and light winds in the Guaymas San Carlos area.
The Mexican Riviera today: Mazatlan mid to high teens for the 3-day forecast period. Puerto Vallarta mid teens today and light over the weekend. Cabo Corrienties light NW and south of Cabo Corrienties light southerlies for the 3-day forecast period.
Daytime highs continue to rise. Right now it looks like the central Sea will be seeing temperatures in the 80s on Sunday.
