.Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that the central and northern portion of the Sea of Cortez still has heavy overcast this morning. The Pineapple Express continues to pick up moisture from along the ITCZ/Monsoon trough and transport it north along the Baja peninsula.
Now for the past few days a low that has moved all the way west from around Hawaii is now embedded within the plume. For the past 24 hours it has moved north along the peninsula and this morning the low is around 200 miles SW of San Diego.
Interesting dynamics of what is about to happen tomorrow. A cold low now just leaving the Gulf of Alaska will drop down the west coast and tomorrow will push that Baja low and it’s associated cold front east over southern California and southwest Arizona.
Meantime the Pineapple Express will continue to transport these moisture laden clouds along the Baja coast bring mostly scattered light showers along the west coast of the peninsula and scattered sprinkles from around Concepción Bay north today for the Sea.
The plume is weakening and today through tomorrow we could see patches of sun along with a mix of multi-level clouds passing over.
That’s a lot of talk just to say it will be cloudy again today mostly in the central and northern Sea.
The cape area looks to be clear this morning as well as all along the Mexican Riviera.
The Tehuantepec in the Gulf is winding down. The advisories are still up for 40 knot winds that will diminish later today, however winds in the Gulf wall be in the mid 20s over the weekend.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where at the top of this image the Great Northwest will see mostly showers today, then tomorrow a cold front will arrive from the Gulf of Alaska that will bring low elevation snow through the weekend into early next week.
Northern California will feel the affects of that cold front moving down the coast mostly with Temperature drops and little in the way of any rain over the weekend. Next week should be dry in northern California.
Southern California is getting a double-whammy. That Alaskan cold front will arrive tomorrow just in time to push that low moving up the Baja coast inland.
Today subtropical moisture ahead of that low will bring periods of rain today into tomorrow. The rain will turn to showers tomorrow as the Alaskan cold front arrives and starts to move east. The weekend will continue to have unsettled weather including a chance of a thunderbumper this weekend.
Looking not over to the southwest where that combo Alaskan cold front and Pacific storm will move across the desert southwest bringing widespread rainfall to the area mainly tonight and early tomorrow. The threat of showers will persist through at least next Tuesday or Wednesday as conditions remain moist while another low pressure system moves through. Temperatures will drop over the weekend to below seasonal norms and continue through much of next week.
Well, that’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the fence it looks like this weekend it shaping up to be very pleasant. Seasonally warm January days and very moderate winds. The only fly in the ointment are the clouds passing to the north above us. Hopefully they will be gone by tomorrow night.
Here is what the wind look like. The northern Sea today, moderate NW winds in the high teens then the mid teens Saturday and Sunday from the SE.
Those light southern winds will extend as far south as Santa Rosalia over the weekend.
The central Sea from Concepción Bay south to Puerto Escondido moderate northerlies through the weekend.
The southern Sea, La Paz and the East Cape moderate northerlies today and the weekend.
The outside passage will see light to moderate mostly southern winds over the 3-day forecast period.
The Mexican Riviera light to moderate winds for the next 3 days with lots of sunshine. Temperatures in the mid 80s.
