.Looking down into the Sea this morning with the 24 hour loop I can see the that band of clouds off the west coast of the Baja peninsula has swung south starting yesterday afternoon and has continued moving south so that now the plume is pretty much centered over Puerto Vallarta with the northern edge just south of the cape and the southern edge around Cabo Corrienties.
In general this leaves the Sea of Cortez pretty much cloud free today.
What has caused this band to narrow considerably is the arrival of the southern jet last night. So it looks like the area from around Mazatlan south to Cabo Corrienties will be seeing a mix of whispys and fluffys today.
Looking out into the Eastern Pacific basin where there is still a lot of convection building along the zone for the jet to transport toward Mexico.
Looking now back at the mainland and the Gulf of Tehuantepec where it continues to be relatively quiet there. Right now it looks like the next wind event will be late Tuesday into Wednesday possibly up to gale force.
Well that’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America of America where a pool of cold arctic air has settled over the western conus.
Here are some overnight lows along the west coast for last night. San Diego 28, La La Land 33, Sacramento 27, Seattle 25. Tucson was 19 degrees at 5am this morning.
Temperatures this cold could be putting a hurt on the ag-biz in California depending on how long the temperatures remain below 30 degrees.
The good and the bad are in the forecast. The good is that this cold spell will be over most likely Tuesday with strong high pressure building over the Great Basin. The west should see significant warming from Wednesday into the weekend.
The bad is that strong high pressure over the Great Basin will give cause to some very strong winds in the Sea starting Monday and lasting until Wednesday perhaps Thursday.
In southern California as soon as their freezing and sub freezing temperatures rise on Tuesday it looks like they will have a two day Santa Ana Wind event which with the wind chill it won’t feel much warmer.
Looking now over to the southwest where widespread hard freeze conditions occurred last night. It should remain dry over the southwest through the middle of next week, except for the White Mountains where they could see a light dusting of snow today and Monday. High pressure will return mid week with a warming trend into the weekend.
That’s what is gong on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence the weekend in general for the Sea looks to be fairly pleasant with mostly moderate winds.
Monday starts a period of very strong winds in the Sea that will last until probably Wednesday when the pressure gradient relaxes between the Sea and the Great Basin. Right now winds to 40 knots are in the long range outlook for the Sea for this period.
Here is what the winds look like for the next 3 days.
For the northern Sea today and tomorrow moderate NW and Monday picking up to around 30.
The central Sea moderate today, Brisk to around 20 tomorrow and Monday around 30+.
The southern Sea the 20k winds continue from La Paz south to along the East Cape for today and tomorrow, picking up to around 30 knots on Monday.
The outside passage looks like the southen half of the passage will seee ballpark 20k winds over the next 3 day. The northern half in general moderate winds over the nxt 3 days..
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan strong winds today to perhaps 27 and then around 20 Sunday and Monday. From there south the winds go from moderate to light around Zihuatanejo for the next 3 days.
