TODAYS SURFACE BAROMETIC PRESSURE READINGS:
. Well off the Oregon coast is our Pacific high this morning. It is 1031. It should start to move to the south as the next low weather maker is moving down if from the northern Pacific today.
About 600 miles off the California coast is a cutoff low, separated from the main jetstream current, it is sort of drifting aimlessly. This low will most likely be a weather maker for the southwest sometime, whenever it starts to move onshore. Meantime the real meteorologists are pulling out their slide rules because their gazillion dollar computer models can’t figure out what this low is going to do. I’ll keep you posted when they figure it out.
OK back on shore: There is a weak low descending into the upper Great Basin, Utah and Wyoming this morning and the rest of the western conus are under high pressure in the 1020 ranges.
This chart is showing the Sea of Cortez to be in a 1016 trough. The grib files are showing one notch higher with 1017.
The Real-Time Reporting Stations are showing a little more gradient with 1015-1016 in the northern and central sea band 1013 around the cape.

.Well, taking a god’s eye look down into the sea this morning everything looks pretty good no clouds to speak of, either on the peninsula or along the Riviera this morning. It does look like that is going to change starting this morning. We are being double teamed. From out about 140 there is a large area of convection that is pumping out moisture laden clouds that are sort of filling in the Eastern Pacific Basin. The eastern flow is taking these clouds directly toward Baja and the Mexican Riviera this morning. They are a mix of whispys and fluffys and it looks like they will start passing over the central and southern sea later this morning.
We also have a band of clouds moving in from the north. These have been moving down the California coast for the past 24 hours and are now just arriving in Baja and are starting to enter this sea. How far south they will go I don’t have a clue. How much cloud cover we will have today, it’s hard to guess with Pacific full of clouds and the eastern flow, but I’d guess perhaps 50% cloud cover by this afternoon. That’s really just a guess.
Ok looking around the basin before moving north. The ITCZ is quiet this morning. The gap winds in the Tehuantepec will begin later today increase to gale force by tonight.
OK looking north now to the West Coast of America. Well California and most of the west coast is cloudy this morning. Southern California and Arizona have some clouds passing over this morning. These clouds are associated with that low off the California coast. I just read a few minutes ago that the European model is renewing its earlier convictions of moving that cutoff low inland, but now taking it south into Baja and northwest Mexico Saturday and Sunday. So it looks like I may be revising my weekend forecast, at least Saturday tomorrow.
OK back to this image. Looking up to the top of this image I can see that the upper portion of the Great Basin has some clouds as a weak system moves across the area.
Back down here today, it looks like we may see some cloud cover starting later this morning. Temperatures will be in the low 80s, high 70s today. Very moderate winds for the entire Sea of Cortez today. A very nice December day in store for us.
