Well it’s great to be able to use the satellites again after Hughes cut me off yesterday. My fault. I just got a little piggy with my downloads.
OK Looking down this morning first the big picture: To the north and south of the Baja peninsula we have heavy clouds. The sea of Cortez is pretty much cloud free this morning. So looking to the south. We have a fake Pineapple Express sending a plume of clouds over most of the Mexican Riviera this morning. I say fake because the classic Pineapple Express derives its name from coming from the tropics, southwest of Hawaii. This plume of clouds is emanating from the ITCZ which is snaking along about 8 north this morning. Out about 120 West a plume of clouds breaks loose and heads northeast directly for Puerta Vallarta this morning. The extremes are about Manzanillo to the south and Mazatlan to the north. No rain has been reported from this plume of clouds. It looks like this plume will remain on station sending a canopy of clouds over the Riviera today.
Looking now to the south. I mentioned earlier that there is a Tehuantepecker brewing. Gail force winds in the 30-40 knot ranges with little change forecast for the next several days.
So, looking back to the west coast of the Baja peninsula this morning. I don’t see any fog along the coast this morning, but I do see some cirrus clouds, whispys, that are on the fringes of the California storm crossing the northern sea a little to the north of the Midriffs.
Ok, looking now up to the west coast of America this morning. Winter is on the way to the west as an eastern Pacific storm system pushes rainy weather across the entire west coast. An associated cold front will bring rain showers and possible thunderstorms to much of central and northern California, Oregon and Washington, as it treks eastward. Snow showers are expected to occur over higher terrain. Areas of scattered showers are expected to spread over portions of the Central Great Basin and the remainder of the Northwest by late tonight.
It looks like there will be frost on the pumpkin and all the little ghosts and goblins will be carrying an umbrella along with their trick or treat bags tonight.
We however will NOT have frost on our pumpkins. At least for today the temperatures will remain in the high 80s. The central and southern sea today will be a tad gusterly this afternoon, including the northern crossing. If you are planning to be underway moving south today you will have a nice push. It looks like Sunday we should be back to our normal moderate afternoon northerlies.
.
A reminder: If the propagation is lousy and you have trouble hearing this forecast and happen to be in a location that has internet service. Each day’s Weather Summary is on the Sonrisa Net Web Page.
And speaking of which, Paul (our Webmaster extradinare) has updated the guest log with a new program that really works. So if you have a chance, check into the webpage. And let us know where you are etc. I’m still working on the picture page.
.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN. And let me be the first to say BOO to you.
73’s y’all

NO FORECAST TODAY EXCEPT NORTHERN CROSSING.

The low-rent provider of my satellite service, Hughes, has cut me off for today because I got a little piggy with my downloads yesterday. Actually Paul IPU and I were working on the web page and did some major downloading.
New to the Sonrisa Net web page is an updated Guest Check-in. It asks for your boat name but we know there are a lot of folks that check in that are landlubbers, but it’s really ok to go ahead and let us know who you are.
Second: The Gallery is being updated and is currently UNDER CONSTRUCTION. When I’m finished, (I hope), it should provide a slide show of the many pictures folks have sent in, including photos of the Net Controllers. Woopee…..maybe. This HTML stuff is not my strong suit.

.Well looking down into the sea this morning. I can see isolated fluffys all over the place. Some moving in from the Pacific, crossing the peninsula from the cape to about Puerto Escondito this morning. It looks like there were a number of showers within in the past 24 hours, mostly the south cape area. All these clouds are the remnants of our last tropical disturbance 17 echo. It is currently a bit southwest of the cape and still pumping out moisture. It looks like the cape area, sort of centered over La Paz will be seeing the bulk of these clouds today. The rest of the peninsula and sea south to about Santa Rosalia will most likely see isolated fluffys pass over.
Looking over to the Mexican Riviera this morning. I can see a heavy plume of clouds moving up from the ITCZ around 110W this morning. That area along 10N looks like a pot boiling over, spitting out squalls. This heavy band of clouds heads directly northeast for Cabo Corrienties, where it then passes over the mainland and enters the gulf and finally puts a canopy of clouds over west Florida. The extremes are about Puerta Vallarta in the north and Acapulco to the south. Only trace amounts of rain reported from the reporting stations on the Riviera for the past 24 hours, but it looks like heavy showers as the plume entrees the gulf on the east coast of Mexico.
Taking a quick looks at the Tehuantepec isthmus this morning, there is still a Tehuantepecker brewing there with gale force winds across the bay.
Looking now back to the Baja peninsula. Lots of Cirrus, whispys, showing up on this image but it looks like the marine layer is absent from the west coast of Baja this morning.
So looking up to the West Coast of America this morning. The first thing that catches your eye is a big honking low moving across the Pacific. This front is a weather maker and will be putting frost on the pumpkins and the trick-or-treaters in California will be getting wet on Halloween.
This cold front will then move into the great basin this weekend pushing the high that has been there for the past two weeks off to the east. So cooler temperatures are finally on the way and we will also be seeing the temperatures drop as this cold front crosses to the north of us ending out unseasonal warm spell. We will be switching from tee shirts to sweat shirts next week.
However today the afternoon temperatures will remain in the high 80s with slightly cooler evening temperatures. Here in the cove we are averaging about 3 degrees cooler than normal for our overnight lows. So spotty clouds today for the central and southern sea as the remnants of tropical disturbance 17 Echo belches out the last of its moisture.

.Looking down into the sea this morning. I can see a scattered mix of fluffys and whispys, probably Cirrus, scattered around the sea. These are coming from the south and it looks like they are passing quickly over the sea onto the mainland.
Looking over to the Mexican Riviera this morning. I can see where there have been some passing fluffys over the Riviera, some with dark bottoms. I can see one is right over Mazatlan right now, but mostly for the past 24 hours not a lot of convection along the Riviera.
From about Ixtapa Zihuatanejo south to Acapulco there is a steady parade of clouds moving ashore from the remnants of tropical storm 17 Echo. The remnant clouds are also being fed by a steady band of clouds that are moving off the ITCZ along 10 north this morning. These clouds pass over the mainland and pretty much dissipate once they hit the Gulf.
A final look at the ITCZ before moving north. The ITCZ is snaking right on top of 10 North this morning with just a light parade of squalls pretty much stationary. Looking over at Tehuantepec Bay and the isthmus, it starting to pick up again there with Gail force winds forecast to be there later today. That was a pretty short crossing window this weekend.
Ok looking to the north now and the west coast of the peninsula. I can see just a light marine layer at a number of locations along the outside this morning. Most should burn off as the sun rises.
Ok looking now at the West Coast of America this morning. I can see a long narrow band of clouds is approaching the California coast this morning. With high pressure dominating the area this trough won’t be moving ashore until later in the week. I can see a front moving across the northern Pacific. It should arrive in Seattle by Wednesday. Meantime the west will be warm and dry. Over in New Mexico and Eastern Arizona there is what they call a back door front that has moved in. Back door meaning it arrived from the east not the west. This is causing some gusterly conditions in southwest Arizona today, then laying down tonight.
Back down here in Baja we will be having a great Baja Autumn day with temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s, Lots of sun and moderate northerly’s.

.Ok Taking a gods eye view of the sea this morning, I can’t see any clouds in the sea. Well it looks like a few fluffys south of La Paz this morning. Looking over to the Mexican Riviera I can see the remnants of tropical depression 17 Echo pretty much due west of Manzanillo. The remnant clouds are drifting NE over the mainland, creating a broken canopy of clouds over the Mexican Riviera before moving up into south Texas. None of the reporting stations reported any rain.
Further south hardly a cloud between there and Central America. I mentioned the Tehuantepecker is gone and the moderate winds there this morning the bay should be almost flat this afternoon. Another wind event is forecast for Tuesday so it looks like the window is open for an uneventful crossing today.
Looking a bit further south to the ITCZ. I can see a very light parade of convection snaking along 10 north this morning. The only thunderbumpers I can see is a single thumper off the coast of Nicaragua this morning.
So looking back to Baja and the west coast of the peninsula. Not much of a marine layer along the coast except from about Pt. San Quinten north where it is thick as soup all the way north to the bay area this morning. It’s forecast to be like that until Tuesday.
Looking now at the west coast of America this morning. A ridge of high pressure in the West will keep the region dry and push any storm system well north into western Canada. This high will also provide seasonally high temperatures for much of the Southwest and the West Coast. The entire area is pretty much cloud free as well.
Although it won’t have much affect on our weather down here for a while, the big story over the next few days will be the first push of cold, Arctic air of the fall season into the northern portion of the country. I doubt we will frost on our pumpkins but it looks like the northern portion of the United States will.
Back down here we will be have another great Autumn Baja day with light to moderate winds on the sea and coastal areas. Although I did notice that the sunrise temperatures were a degree or two cooler this morning we will still have afternoon highs in the high 80s and low 90s.
73s y’all Did you set your clock back this morning?

Satellite / Summary Report from this mornings Ham Radio Forecast

Voice to Text……….
For ID here is WB6 Papa Kilo Hotel
.This looks like one of those days when I could say “Ain’t nothing to see anyplace”. But let’s see if I can drag this out a bit.
The Sea of Cortez looks to be cloud free. Looking south to the Mexican Riviera. That tropical depression Seventeen Echo plutoed to a low and is now a bit to the southwest of Manzanillo. The clouds don’t’ have a lot of moisture and none of the reporting stations along the Riviera are reporting any. This low is drawing a plume of clouds from the ITCZ , so we now have a long band of clouds that pretty much blanket the Riviera from Mazatlan to Acapulco then the band broadens and extends across Mexico and into the Gulf of Mexico around the Texas border.
Looking further south to the Tehuantepec. Still a Tehuantepecker brewing down there with gale force winds.
Looking now at the west coast of the peninsula. Not much of a marine layer this morning. Light at both Mag Bay and Turtle Bays, and Pt. San Quinten to the border looks patchy. All will burn off early this morning.
So looking now at the West Coast of America. Well, it that time of year when all that high pressure up to the north of us is a dangerous recipe for both fires and the Santa Ana winds. Above normal temperatures forecast for the entire western conus with some record highs forecast for the lower deserts.
About the only item of interest besides the unseasonably warm temperatures for today is a high surf advisory for the Northern California coast with a large Northwest swell building to around 15 ft. This will bring breakers to 18 ft on the facing beaches. Wave heights are forecast to diminish tomorrow.
For us down here in Baja it is shaping up to be a fantastic autumn day. Very moderate winds today. Lots of sun with temperatures in the high 80s low 90s. Humidity ranges that are comfortable. It looks like the World Series may have a rain-out today. I checked the weather at Philadelphia this morning and they are forecasting a 100% chance of rain. Well we’ll see.

.Ok looking down into the sea this morning the Sea of Cortez remains pretty much cloud free this morning. Out in the Pacific, off the southern Baja coast I can see a band of cirrus on march toward Baja. It looks like they should arrive over most of Baja Sur this afternoon. These clouds are scattered so we will be seeing a lot more sun than clouds.
Ok looking now to the Mexican Riviera. From about Puerta Vallarta south to Acapulco It looks like one large thunderbumper.
This is the consequence of a tropical depression off the Riviera this morning. Tropical depression 16 Echo. It is about 400 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo right now. The National Hurricane Center is saying it could turn into a tropical storm for a short time before heading for Hawaii. If it did it would be named Polo. Finally a name that I can pronounce. No matter what this system does.
A: it’s too far away to affect the weather in the sea.
B: The water is too cold to support much of a storm.
Oh course I keep I’ll keep you posted on the progress.
While we are talking tropical weather: One of this hurricane season's biggest disasters continues to unfold in Central America, where the death toll now stands at 39 from ten days of heavy rains triggered by last week's Tropical Depression Sixteen and this week's tropical disturbance 91L. At least 10,000 homes have been destroyed and 250,000 people made homeless by the floods. Hardest hit is Honduras, where 23 are dead and 8 missing in flash floods and landslides. Approximately 60% of the nation's roads have been damaged, and the flooding is the worst since Hurricane Mitch of 1998 killed 10,000 people there. The past week's flooding has also killed four in Guatemala, seven in Costa Rica, four in Nicaragua, and four in El Salvador. In Belize, damage is at least $15 million from the floods, and some areas are seeing flooding worse than was experienced during Hurricanes Mitch and Keith... The heavy damage to crops across the region will likely cause severe food shortages in coming months, and substantial international aid will be required.
Mother Nature at her worst. The Tehuantepecker brewing further south seems mild in comparison. Winds are minimal gale force through the Gulf of Tehuantepec. It is forecast to subside tomorrow, however it looks like conditions are right for a stronger gap event , possibly storm force, early next week. So if you are waiting to make a crossing you might look around for a thick book.
A quick look further south to the ITCZ where is can see half dozen squalls sitting on 10N this morning with no north/south movement.
OK, back to Baja and the west coast of the peninsula where I cans see pockets of fog at Mag Bay, Turtle Bay and at Pt. San Quinten this morning. Pt. San Quinten looks like it is pretty thick there.
So, looking now to the West Coast of America. High pressure has brought clear skies and above warm temperatures to the entire western conus this morning. Well the Great Northwest this time of year always has something moving in from the Pacific but the rest, pretty much cloud free.
That’s what the Sea will be like, at least for this morning, cloud free. Our monthly afternoon Temperature averages are running about a degree warmer that norm. Humidity ranges are still well above average, so we should be looking at a heat index of around 95 today. Not too bad for late October.

.Well looking down into the sea this morning I can’t see any clouds. Looking south to the Mexican Riviera in the animate mode. I can see some thunderbumper activity, mostly off shore, south of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, sort of between Ixtapa Zihuatanejo and Acapulco. And you heard it first on the Sonrisa Net weather folks. These clouds came all the way from the tropics via the Pineapple Express. Looking at the ITCZ this morning the east-west flow has pretty much stopped and the flow of all the clouds along the ITCZ now have either a northward movement or a westward flow. Welcome back Pineapple Express.
Ok while I’m down here I can see a developing low and the associated convection west of Acapulco. It very unlikely that it will become much more than a disturbed low. The sea surface temperatures won’t support much else. They are dropping rather fast along the Riviera.
So not much going on down there with the exception of the annual arrival of the Pineapple Express. So looking over at the west coast of the Baja peninsula this morning. I can see a light marine layer around Mag Bay and Turtle Bay and heavy fog hugging the coast around Pt. San Quinten. The rest of the west coast looks to be pretty much clear this morning.
So looking now up to the West Coast of America. For the western conus, it’s pretty dull weather-wise up there. High pressure, dry air, clear skies, and temperatures a tad above normal. For the Great Basin east it is just the opposite. Rain, Snow, freezing weather.
However here in Baja we won’t see any of that. It will be continue to be warm and a bit gusterly in the northern and central sea today, but not the heavy 30 knot Santa ana northerlies your humble weather guy MIGHT have mentioned would happen today.
I have noticed that, without exception, I have never heard a weather person apologize for a crummy forecast, and I certainly don’t want to break with that time honored tradition.
Before I close with the weather I have an update on the problems in Central America. A nationwide state of emergency continues in Honduras, where at least thirteen people died in the flooding. In Belize, damage is already estimated in the ten of millions, and some areas are seeing flooding worse than was experienced during Hurricanes Mitch and Keith. In northern Guatemala, at least 70 towns have been cut off by flood waters and a state of emergency has been declared. Satellite estimates suggest that up to a foot of rain has fallen over the region in the past week.

Satellite / Summary Report from this mornings Ham Radio Forecast

. Well taking a god’s eye look down this morning, the sea is pretty much free of any clouds that I can see with the satellites. Still looking down at this high altitude and looking to the south I can see the first westward flow of clouds along the ITCZ. These are moving off the ITCZ to the north then flowing back toward the Mexican Riviera and Central America this morning. Whereas two weeks ago the thunderbumpers were forming over in the sierras on the mainland and moving to the west toward the coast. This morning the weather is coming from the west.
Putting this image in the animate mode I can see that numerous thunderbumpers moved ashore, mostly from Manzanillo south. Puerta Vallarta had just a trace of rain within the past 24 hours, and with the exception of Acapulco there are no real time stations that I can get rain totals from along the Riviera. The Acapulco station did not show any rain either for the past 24 hours. I guess I’ll have to wait until the fleet moves south for real-time rain total reports along the Riviera.
Before moving back to Baja here is a special report on the western Caribbean from Jeff Masters at Wunderground Weather:
. A week of heavy rains over northern Honduras, northern Guatemala, and Belize due to Tropical Depression Sixteen and a Western Caribbean tropical disturbance (91L) have resulted in record flooding and deadly mudslides across the region. In Honduras, a nationwide state of emergency has been declared, and at least eleven people are dead and two missing from the flooding. Two large landslides blocked the Coyol River in western Honduras yesterday, forming a lake 500 feet deep. Engineers are attempting to drain the lake today, but they won't be helped by the weather--91L promises to move little the next two days, and will continue to dump heavy rains on the region. In Belize, damage is already estimated in the ten of millions, and some areas are seeing flooding worse than was experienced during Hurricanes Mitch and Keith. In northern Guatemala, at least 70 towns have been cut off by flood waters and a state of emergency has been declared. Satellite estimates suggest up to a foot of rain has fallen over the region in the past week.
.
.OK back to Baja. Looking at the outside I can see that heavy fog is hugging the coast from inside Turtle Bay and the Laguna area north to about Santa Barbara this morning. Heavy fog advisories have been issued for Southern California this morning.
Ok taking a look now at the rest of the west coast of America. At the very top of this image I can see a big honking 968 low moving down the Aleutians toward British Columbia and the Great Northwest this morning. This is putting pressure on that 1040 low over Idaho to move to the east. As I mentioned earlier there is about a 25mb gradient between Idaho and Southern California and the strongest winds will be in the Southern California passes. 55 mph are being forecast. Over in the Great Basin the gradient is not as pronounced. We will still be having a wind event for a couple of days, however I’m sort of big time iffy on the strength of the winds. I’m forecasting up to 30 knots as far south as the northern crossing. You know me, if I can error, I will do it on the high side.
So it looks like we will see buffalos romping around the northern and central sea for a couple of days. If you are out of the wind the temperatures will continue to be warm and in the low 90s this afternoon. For the southern sea: Absolutely delightful. For the Mexican Riviera from Puerta Vallarta south about a 50% chance of thunderbumpers.

.Well looking down into the sea this morning. No clouds. If fact I don’t believe I have seen a cloud in a week. So looking over to the Mexican Riviera with a 12 hour animated loop. Nothing going on there for the past 12 hours. There are a few fluffys along the coast and a small thunderbumper well off the coast of Manzanillo that’s in the process of breaking up. Looking south to the ITCZ: It is snaking along 9N this morning and about 11N 105W there is a weak low sitting there and the zone dips north to take a quick look then dips back to 9N again. Not a lot of activity in the zone this morning, just a few light squalls marching along west.
So taking a look way out to Hawaii, actually Southwest of Hawaii to see if there is any indication that we might see the Pineapple Express soon.
Well nothing there. No indication yet that that NE flow out of the tropics will start bringing us those great sunrises we enjoy so much.
So looking north now, back to Baja to take a look at the west coast of the peninsula. Well from Turtle Bay, and most of the Laguna area it looks like heavy fog. It hugs the coastline all the way north to just north of San Diego. It should burn off by mid morning and return again tomorrow.
So looking now up to the west coast of America.
I mentioned earlier that the building 1032 Pacific high is encroaching into Northern California, Oregon and Washington this morning. At is moves east into Idaho and continues to build to around 1040 by tomorrow it sets up the conditions for a wind event. There will be about a 15mb gradient between Northern Nevada/Idaho and the southland. The sea is forecast to be in the 1012 ranges tomorrow so from Idaho to the Sea of Cortez there could be as much as a 28mb gradient, Which means windy conditions in Southern California, Southern Arizona, including the lower Colorado river valley where they could see winds to 55mph. Here in the sea gust to 30K
That’s the bad news the good news is that high won’t be around long, perhaps only a day before it moves off to the east. It looks right now like the northern and central sea will start to see these winds tomorrow and probably to a lesser degree on Thursday.
Friday I’m planning a picnic so the winds will have to abate by then. Interesting, last year, on this day, the exact same thing happened to our north and we had 20-30k winds in the sea.
Today it looks like a chamber of commerce day with temperatures still in the mid to high 90s. You might however want to find that sweatshirt you put away in the spring, this wind event tomorrow will start to cool things off a bit, so enjoy today.

.Well looking down into the Sea of Cortez this morning it continues to be pretty much cloud free. Looking over to the Mexican Riviera I can see a couple of thunderbumpers have been building all night. One is right over Manzanillo and the other Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. Neither one is large or very tall so I’m sort of assuming they are not big rain producers.
Looking further south: Nothing happening weather-wise along the Riviera, so taking a look over to the Caribbean side. I can see a nearly stationary area of low pressure that has been over the northwestern Caribbean for a couple of days. It’s fairly disorganized and has only moderate thunderbumper activity right now. If it does develop any more they are forecasting for heavy rain in Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and the Yucatan peninsula for the next several days.
Ok, looking back to the Eastern Pacific Basin and the ITCZ this morning. I can see a couple of lows hitching a ride on the ITCZ this morning. One about 95 and the other around 110.W. The ITCZ is running pretty much along 9N this morning.
Well so far nothing exciting, so looking now over to the west coast of the Baja peninsula with the GOES east “Fog Imagery Loop” satellite. Holy Moly finally something to report, albeit it’s only fog. It’s pretty thick this morning inside of Turtle Bay and back into the Laguna area. Then, further north, there is a heavy bank hugging the coast from Pt. San Quinten to about Santa Barbara.
Ok looking now up to the west coast of America. Well we know now there is fog along the Southern California coast this morning. Also isolated pockets of fog are along the entire west coast to British Columbia this morning.
And while I’m looking at British Columbia I can see the first of several low systems that will be moving into the Great Northwest this week. This one is providing rain to Oregon and Washington this morning and perhaps snow to the cascades as it moves to the east later today.
Looking over into the Great Basin it looks like the 4 corners area and the northern portions of Arizona and New Mexico have a canopy of fluffys over them this morning. This is a weak low system that is moving through the area and could produce a shower or two before it leaves the area. High pressure should fill in behind this system.
So looking down to the bottom of this image to the Mexican border. They are also affected by this low that is primarily to the north of them, but it looks like a day of whispys for them rather than the fluffys to the north.
Back down here in Baja today sunrise temperatures, across the board, was a degree or two higher than yesterday. Here it is late in October and Mulegé hit 103 yesterday afternoon, so you have to believe that it will be warmer today.
We are currently averaging 2 degrees warmer than the average temperatures for last year. So that shimmer on the pumpkin may not be frost. It just might be sweat.
And today we should see light to moderate northerly’s and lots of sun. The nice thing we are starting to see the humidity drop a bit. This being said here in the cove we had a beer index yesterday of 101 and I had a fan on for part of the night last night.

. I will mention this again so it will end up in my daily weather blog.
Thanks to Alex on Maitairoa I have posted photos of the net controllers in the Gallery portion of the sonrisa net web page (sonrisanet.org). The only exception is Marsha. So someone snap a picture of her and send it to me. And for those of you who might have missed the sonrisa weather due to lousy propagation or tequila. My blog is a summary of today’s weather and you can pick it up on the sonrisa net web page. And this might be a good time to thank Paul IPU for his work on this project.
Ok back to the satellite images this morning. Looking down into the sea in the animate mode, it does not look like there was even a wispy over the sea in the past 24 hours.
A different picture over along the Mexican Riviera. Thunderbumpers popping up all along the Riviera. Most built up in the late afternoons and now all I can see are some remnant clouds here and there. Lots of moisture in the air so if you are in this area expect to see the same thing today. I did notice that not all these thumpers were rain producers. Mazatlan and Puerta Vallarta only showed traces of rain falling.
Looking further south there is a strong pressure gradient in the Tehuantepec isthmus today creating gale force winds that will persist until probably Tuesday morning. The gribs as well as the qscatt are showing these winds extending out into the basin quite a ways. So ADVISE CAUTION if you are in the area. This is a full fledged Tehuantepecker.
Checking out the ITCZ this morning. It is showing only light convection with just a few scattered squalls along 9 north this morning.
OK moving back to Baja and looking at the west coast of the peninsula. I can see a light marine layer around Turtle Bay. Then from about Pt. San Quinten north to about La La land the fog thickens and hugs the coast this morning.
Taking a look now at the West Coast of America. Well, it looks like most of California this morning has some cloudiness. Look like mostly whispys. Up at the top of this image I can see the first of two low systems making a move on the Pacific Northwest this morning. The first is a 1003 low just about to make landfall, and the other is more to the north and a bit stronger with a center of about 980 with a tight circle of isobars surrounding it. It looks like the parade of storms into the Pacific Northwest is well underway. They can expect to see the first rain and snow tomorrow from Portland to Seattle along the coast.
The rest of the conus is pretty much cloud free except for Montana Idaho and Colorado where a canopy of clouds cover the area.
The southwest will continue to see seasonally warm temperatures again today. Yesterday Yuma hit 100 degrees.
Back down here we can expect the warm temperatures to continue for today. Mulegé normally our warmest spot could hit the century mark today. That will keep the fans going in the bars as the football fans belly up to the bars to watch TV. So lots of sun, light winds and seasonally warm temperatures today. Sounds like a great time to be in Baja.

Satellite / Summary Report from this mornings Ham Radio Forecast
:
Voice to Text……….
For ID here is WB6 Papa Kilo Hotel .Taking a god eye look at the Sea of Cortez this morning. The sea is almost cloud free. Well, I can see a few fluffys well to the north. What catches your eye is over along the Riviera this morning. There has been a huge cell building between Acapulco and Manzanillo over night. This image is showing the cloud tops to be very high but with no reporting stations in the area I don’t know if this is a rain producer. In the animated loop it looks like it is past its peak and weakening now, even though it is still quite large. I was not able to bring up the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo airport this morning either. So the best I can do is say big honkin’ thunderbumper.
From there south to the Tehuantepec isthmus there have been scattered thunderbumpers building close to shore then moving off shore for the past 24 hours. At the Tehuantepec we have a Tehuantepecker brewing with gale force winds expected early tomorrow morning through Monday. So advise caution. It’s a little unclear now if the winds will abate by Tuesday, so if you’re on either side, hunker down for a couple of days.
Looking further south to the ITCZ this morning. Not much convection along the zone this morning, just some fluffys.
So moving back to Baja and looking at the west coast of the peninsula. It looks like only a very light marine layer along the coast that will move off shore early this morning.
So looking now up to the West Coast of America. Just a pleasant autumn day for the entire western conus. Well, I can see it’s raining in Portland right now and forecast to drop down into northern California tomorrow, but the rest of the west is seeing clear sky and seasonal warm temperatures.
Back down here just about the same forecast, sin the rain.
Lots of sun, light to moderate winds for the sea today. Temperatures will be in the high 80s, low 90s today. All in all I think the Chamber of Commerce would be pleased.
As I was putting this together I could hear Alex and Sue on Maitairoa getting ready to haul the hook and leave El Burro Cove and head south. They came in on Friday flying the chute. Beautiful sight. This morning I walked out to see them depart and the bay was flat and crimson with the morning sun. It looks like a great day to be on the sea.

Sea of Cortez Weather 10/17

Satellite / Summary Report from this mornings Ham Radio Forecast
:
Voice to Text……….
For ID here is WB6 Papa Kilo Hotel

.Before taking a look down into the sea this morning I wanted to share a few thoughts with you. For those of you that are cruisers in the Sea of Cortez and the Mexican Riviera, the weather is obviously very important. Down here we don’t have The Weather Channel, Doppler radar or a staff of highly paid PHDs analyzing the data punched out by a zillion dollar Cray computer.
What we do have are some folks that have become interested enough in the weather down here to fill in the gaps and provide a fairly accurate weather picture, for you, the cruiser.
There is myself, Stan in Santiago, Brent on Chubbasco, and of course Don Anderson who provides the Adult weather for not just here, but for most of the Pacific. Hopefully with all this information coming from your ham radio, we keep you away from peril, and that’s just one more reason to become a ham. Which brings me to my point.
Dick on Corazon will be giving a test next month. So join this great group.
.
OK now, bringing up the satellites and taking a look down into the sea this morning. I can see some isolated fluffys here and there but that is about it. Looking over to the Mexican Riviera. It looks like the only thunderbumper activity was back in the sierras to the east of Acapulco late last night. Right now the Riviera is pretty much cloud free.
Looking south to the Tehuantepec. There is the potential for winds to strengthen to Gail force, but at this time, the models are showing only 20-30 knot winds in the Gulf of Tehuantepec for at least the next 48 hours.
Looking further south to the ITCZ, which is slowly retreating to the south. It’s about 9 north this morning and I can see some very light convection along the zone. Not ever a thunderbumper.
Looking off to the west, actually west of Hawaii for any signs of the emergence of the Pineapple Express. No Joy!
So looking now back to the west coast of the Baja peninsula with the GOES East satellite. I can’t see any fog along the coast however fog, dense fog, is forecast for the San Diego area for tomorrow morning.
So looking now up to the West Coast of America. With the exception of that honkin’ low system moving down from the Alaskan Gulf into British Columbia and the Seattle area, it’s pretty dull weather-wise up there. High pressure dominates the entire western conus and it looks like it is going to stay that way for the weekend.
So warm and dry for California and the southwest. Fire danger is still a problem with humidity in the teens and lower.
Back down here we are also FINALLY seeing some comfortable humidity readings on the peninsula. The Mexican Riviera is still seeing high 80s and 90s.
Daytime temperatures on the peninsula will be in the high 80s today along with moderate winds making for an absolutely perfect autumn day in Baja.

Satellite / Summary Report from this mornings Ham Radio Forecast
:
Voice to Text……….
For ID here is WB6 Papa Kilo Hotel
.Taking a god’s eye look down into the sea this morning I can’t see any clouds in the sea itself. So looking over at the Mexican Riviera this morning. When I put the satellite in motion I can see there was a lot of thunderbumper activity from Mazatlan to Manzanillo early last night. This morning all the clouds are gone. Mazatlan must have had a real gully washer with 5.15 inches of rain recorded there yesterday. Puerta Vallarta only about an inch.
Well yesterday was the official end of the 2008 hurricane season, but taking a quick look south to see if anything is brewing. Well, I mentioned earlier that we have a little Tehuantepecker brewing in the bay and isthmus this morning so advise caution if you are in that area.
I can see yet another tropical wave about 18N but there is little likelihood of this sprouting anything. It looks like this may be the last wave to enter the basin this season.
Looking further south to the ITCZ, I can see a fairly light parade of thunderbumpers moving along about 8N. The ITCZ looks like it’s retreating a bit to the south for the winter.
So, looking now at the west coast of the Baja peninsula. I can see a bit of fog hugging the coast from about Pt. San Quinten to the San Diego area this morning.
Looking now at the west coast of America. Well at the top of this image we have that warm front moving in the great North West this morning. I can see it’s raining in Portland and Seattle this morning, and light snow is forecast in the Cascades before it moves east this evening.
I can see some clouds at the top of this image in Idaho and Montana, but the rest of western conus is pretty much cloud free.
South of the 4 corners afternoon temperatures will continue to warm through tomorrow. Little change is forecast through the weekend as high pressure aloft remains the dominant feature for the region.
Back down here we will continue to see moderate northerly’s in the afternoon. The temperatures are dropping daily along with the humidity on the Baja side. The pool temperature just hit 79 degrees here in the cove.
So all in all it looks like another great day to be here in Baja.

.Looking down into the sea this morning. I can see just a few whispys hear and there, mostly between Mazatlan and Los Mochas on the mainland side. I can also see a few whispys floating over the cape right now.
Looking south now to the Mexican Riviera. It looks like from about Mazatlan to Manzanillo have they had some thunderbumper activity in the past 24 hours with rain being reported at both cities yesterday. This image is showing a cell working its way south from Puerta Vallarta to Cabo Corrienties and breaking up right now. Also off to the west of Cabo Corrienties I can see the 1006 low that is the remnant of tropical storm Odile. There is still a lot of convection associated with this low but it’s not forecast to re-develop. So nothing going on out there except some friendly thunderbumpers.
Looking further south. Acapulco is the newest addition to the family of Wunderground real-time weather stations. I brought up their data this morning and they showed 18 inches of rain there yesterday. This image that I’m looking at is a loop of the past 24 hours and I can’t see any clouds over Acapulco. So I’m thinking someone might have dumped a margarita in there rain collector yesterday. Don’t know?
Ok, Tropical Weather: The 2008 hurricane season for the Eastern Pacific Basin is officially over today. Oct. 15th. The next big date is Sunday October 26th where here in Mexico we set our clocks back. Then ,there is Halloween. Hey, it’s a busy month.
I digress. So with no tropical weather to worry about, looking now over to the west coast of the Baja peninsula. All I can see is a light marine layer around Turtle Bay. The Southern California coast is forecast to have the fog return tomorrow morning. That usually extends south to about Pt. San Quinten. We will have to wait and see tomorrow morning.
So looking now up to the west coast of America. It looks like another beautiful autumn day is forecast for California and the Southwest today, thanks to the ridge of high pressure holding in place. In southern California
Low humidity will bring hot and dry weather to the southland, which may cause more fire weather near Los Angeles.
Up at the top of this map, isolated snow showers area forecast over portions of the northern Intermountain West and Northern Rockies. By Thursday, light to moderate rain will be falling across the Pacific Northwest as a Pacific system I mentioned earlier moves down from the Gulf of Alaska.
Back down here for the most part our wind event is over.
Well, it looks like it will still be a bit gusterly on the mainland side. Sort of on the upper end of moderate winds. Otherwise, lots of sun, moderate winds for the central sea, and temperatures about the same as yesterday, perhaps a tad higher. At least it will feel warmer with the big winds gone.
Today I’m going to my winter closet and find the liner for my speed-O. It looks like I’m going to be needing it pretty soon as our October temperatures are starting to cool. The pool Temperature has been dropping about a degree a day for the past several days.

.Ok looking down into the sea this morning I don’t see any clouds in the sea to speak of. A few fluffys here and there. Over along the Mexican Riviera there has been a lot of thunderbumper activity in the past 24 hours. I can see a big thumper sitting on top of Mazatlan right now, and another off shore from Puerta Vallarta. It was raining a while ago in Manzanillo. So it looks like they are still enjoying summer showers.
Looking around for anything tropical I can see that tropical wave still marching in the parade of thunderbumpers moving along the ITCZ again this morning. I’m not sure how many more we will see this year. Looking over to the east I can see they still have a lot on their tropical plate right now. A couple of lows, a named tropical depression and a big honkin’ low NE of Nicaragua Honduras border. Even if there is no further development in this system it is going to be a major rain producer for Nicaragua, Honduras, and Belize for the next few days.
Ok back to Baja, and looking at the west coast of the peninsula. I can see a light marine layer in turtle bay and Guerro Negro this morning. Also at the far northern end of the bay it looks like they might have some fog there.
So looking now up to the west coast of America. It’s cold and dry up there right now. Major concern about fires with these Santa Anna’s today. N. California saw some snow yesterday. This morning a second cold front will push its way over the Pacific Northwest, producing rain across the region in the morning, with snow possible at higher elevations. Skies will partially clear later in the day as high pressure begins to move in behind the front
Warm temperatures are also expected across the southeast from California out to parts of Nevada and Arizona due to that ridge over the area, while the tail end of the cold front across the central part of the country will produce rain over parts of New Mexico and Colorado, with snow likely in the higher elevations.
Back down here in Baja we can expect to see just about the same conditions as yesterday. Sort of major gusterly. Expect to see gusts in the 30-40 knot ranges today. So finish the book you started yesterday because tomorrow we should see an end of these Santa Anna winds and we can climb out of our caves. .

Satellite / Summary Report from this mornings Ham Radio Forecast
:
Voice to Text……….
For ID here is WB6 Papa Kilo Hotel

Well it’s sort of nice to look down into the sea and not see a hurricane.
………..FINAL ON NORBERT…………
Details are still sketchy because the power is still out in a lot of the locations where Norbert passed but here is what I have. Mexican TV is saying 95% of the homes in Magdalena bay area were completely destroyed. Yesterday afternoon San Carlos, Constitution and Insurgentes were still out of power. In Loreto they had a lot of rain all day and the early evening with some flooding as the storm’s center passed a bit to the south of them. No major damage to Loreto, just some minor flooding. No reports of loss of life. No wind or rain from concepcion bay north.
..
Ok back to looking at the satellite views of the area. I can see some remnant clouds from the Tropical storm that had been working its way up the Mexican Riviera for the past several days. These clouds, a mix of whispys and fluffys, are passing over the cape and the La Paz area right now. The rest of the Sea of Cortez is pretty much cloud free this morning.
So looking south now to the Mexican Riviera I can see where they are still having thunderbumpers pop up along the coast. I mentioned earlier that several locations reported rain within the past 24 hours. So moving further south I can see the ITCZ has a nice parade of thunderbumpers marching along with a tropical wave in the parade with them. None of this will affect us, so a quick look around for the beginnings of the Pineapple Express. None seen, so looking now at the west coast of the Baja peninsula. Just a light marine layer at Turtle Bay and the San Ignacio lagoon.
So taking a look now at the west coast of America. Well I’ve already discussed the conditions producing our winds today.
This morning I can see a strong storm system moving out of the Rockies. This was a major snow producer. Snow is forecast to linger across the Great Basin . I can see it snow on Salt lake right now. As this front passes to the east a ridge of high pressure will build behind it and temperatures are expected to warm a bit, though overnight lows will remain cold.
Back down here we are seeing temperatures drop as well. Last week I was looking at sunrise temperatures of 85, this morning 73. I went from no shirt to a sweat shirt in one day. Instead of looking at a heat or beer index today we will be looking at the wind chill wondering what happened to summer.
Anyway, today we should see lots of sunshine as well as buffalos romping around the sea. None of the models agreed about how much, or how far south the winds will be, so someplace along the sea there is a pretty good chance that my forecast will be wrong. Be that as it may, it’s a good day to stay in port.

.
For ID here is WB6 Papa Kilo Hotel
.Looking down into the sea this morning I can see the brother Norbert has crossed the sea and is now causing flooding and mud slides over on the mainland. Here at el burro cove we had only 5-6 knots of wind during the day, mostly from the WNW. During the night we had one puff from the West of 19K, but that was it wind wise. Rain: only a trace, however that’s’ here in the cove. I could see squalls all around us. None of the reporting stations to the north of Concepcion bay reported any rain yesterday. At this time I’m still waiting for a report from Loreto and La Paz.
So Norbert is now just a memory and some clean up where it went through and we have tropical storm Odile still putting along the Mexican Riviera causing lots of rain to the area. It’s forecast to Pluto to a depression today and then just a low by Tuesday. So, three day early I’M CALLING AN OFFICAL END TO THE 2008 HURRICANE SEASON.
Taking another look back at the sea this morning. I can see just a few spotty remnant clouds from Norbert off the mainland coast. Also in the central sea I can see patches of low clouds. It could be fog or just lingering residual clouds from Norbert.
Looking down to the Mexican Riviera I can see Odile sort of spread out along the coast from around Puerta Vallarta south to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. And as I mentioned it’s just about out of rain.
So looking around the Eastern Pacific Basin for anything else. All I can see is some whispys between here and Hawaii this morning.
Looking back at the west coast of the peninsula this morning. No fog, and only a light marine layer along the outside this morning.
So looking now up to the west coast of America. In general, it’s cold and dry up there. I mentioned the Santa Ana’s earlier will be causing some gusterly conditions for the sea the next several days. Gads first a Himicane and now Santa Ana’s. Woopee! I need a hug.
Well that’s about it for today. I’m still waiting for a report from Loreto. When it does arrive I’ll update my daily blog to include any information I get from there.

For ID here is WB6 Papa Kilo Hotel .Looking down into the sea this morning. I can see Himicane Norbert getting ready to make landfall around Mag Bay. I can see that within the past several hours the eye has broken down.
Yesterday Norbert increased to a category 2 Himicane and is forecast to remain at this strength as it passes over Baja this morning, decreasing to a category 1 as it exits a bit to the south of Loreto later today. The current forecast if for Norbert to pass over the sea still at category 1 strengths, that would be 71 to 96 mph on the Saffer/Simpson Hurricane Scale.
Wind speed projections, for me, are impossible to forecast. A guide would be Hurricane force winds extending 30 miles from the center, and then expect to see diminishing winds out to as much as 120 miles.
Using this guide: Loreto, Concepcion Bay, Mulege, and Santa Rosalia could expect to see Tropical Storm force winds this afternoon that could reach 60 mph. All this sort of depends on how much steam is taken out of Norbert as it passes over the peninsula today.
Right now, it looks like the projected track would take Norbert making landfall on the mainland a bit to the south of Guaymas, with that “lingering model uncertainty” thing as to its strength.
ADVISE: PREPARE FOR A VERY SERIOUS STORM WITH HIGH WINDS AND SEAS. Check ground tackle. Use it all.
For you folks on land in the cone of influence.
AVOID AREAS THAT ARE PRONE TO FLOODING. Move to higher ground. Do it now.
Me I’ve got a Himicane party to plan.
Plan B: Beat Feet off the beach.
For those of you with internet service: The web cam on the Sunrise net web site is operating this morning.

.Well taking a gods eye look down into the sea this morning all I can see is Storms to the north and storms to the south of us. The sea has a light canopy of fluffy south to about San Francisco Bay and some fluffys in the southern sea.
First looking at brother Norbert. He is finally started to hook and headed now for the southern Baja peninsula. His current location at 9:00Z is near 19.7N 113.4W or about 315 miles southwest of the cape. During the past 24 hours sustained winds speeds have gone from 135 mph (cat 3) to around 90 mph (cat. 1) Himicane. Norbert is currently forecast to make landfall tomorrow morning around Mag Bay and exit around Aqua Verde. Spending Saturday night in the sea as a tropical storm. This image I’m looking at is showing the outer ring of clouds starting to show up from about Abrejos to the cape and crossing over into the sea. I would expect this to continue most of the day with clouds spreading into the central sea by this afternoon. The sphere of influence is about La Ventana in the south and Santa Rosalia in the north. I talked to Buoy Weather and he told me that during hurricanes to toss out the forecasted data. There is just no way they can forecast winds within the influence of a tropical cyclone. This must also be true for the other wind forecasting websites as well, So, the only other resource I have are the grib files and they are showing 40-60 mph winds in Norbert right now. The Qscatt only goes to 50mph and they are showing that at 3am. So not having any good data I’m saying prepare for the max and that should be about 90 mph as it starts to cross the peninsula, diminishing to 60 as it exits on Sat afternoon, and further diminishing as it crosses the sea. On the outer edges of the sphere of influence probably 30-35 knots. DON’T CHIZLE THIS IN STONE!!! This is my best guess with little supporting data.
Now we have another little problem. Tropical storm Odile. It is making its way up the Mexican Riviera coast and is about 285 miles SE of Acapulco right now and is expected to intensify to a hurricane on Sunday night. Isn’t that special. It is forecast to drop heavy rainfall along the Riviera causing flooding and mud slides along the coast as it moves north. More on Odile tomorrow, we have brother Norbert to worry about for today and tomorrow.

.Before even looking down into the sea this morning. At 4am I sat having coffee on my porch and I could see a lightning show off to the Northeast. When I went inside I brought up the satellites. I could see there was a plume of clouds from Obregon Sonora pretty much filling up the Northern Crossing this morning. These came in from the Pacific and look like they are moving east out of the sea this morning. These are the first of the clouds from Norbert. Over night there have been light bands of whispys moving in from the Pacific, again from Norbert, and causing some light overcast from La Paz to the Northern Crossing the Sea to the north looked to be pretty much cloud free. I would expect to see these whispys start to fill in more this afternoon.
So moving over to the Mexican Riviera this morning. I can see a offshoot of Norbert is sending a plume of heavy clouds over into the Puerta Vallarta and Mazatlan area this morning. The reporting stations in the area nave not reported any rain for the past 24 hours though. The rest of the Riviera is seeing some light overcast this morning. Mostly whispys from Norbert.
Looking further south I can see the Tehuantepec has a wind event building today with 20-35K winds there right now.
Looking further south to around Guatemala, that low that has been sitting there for several days has become tropical storm Odile. Jack on Mandam has been forecasting this to become a hurricane for several days now. He may be right. I wish I had his sources. Anyway Odile is forecast to slowly move parallel to the mainland dropping a lot of rain along the Riviera for the next several days. Odile is currently about 460 miles East Southeast of Acapulco. Well be keeping an eye on Odile.
And speaking of eyes. Looking now over to Himicane Norbert, the eye is very pronounced this morning. He is currently at 17.5N 112.5W. That’s about 355 miles South-southwest of the cape. He has not begun to hook to the east yet. That is forecast to happen tonight. He is leaving the warm waters now and should reach peak strength today then start to gradually and steadily weaken to tropical storm levels as it start to pass over Baja early Saturday morning. The current track is for it to cross the peninsula about 24W on a north easterly track. That would be starting the crossing just to the north of Todo Santos and exiting just a tad to the north of La Paz. The sphere of influence is currently about the Northern crossing to the north and the cape to the south.
Spending a lot of time this morning on our tropical weather, I’m going to pass on looking at the west coast of America. I’m seeing some conflicting reports coming from different weather forecasters regarding the winds on the outside today. I always like to go with the higher values, however I don’t show any winds on the outside greater than 30-35K over the weekend on my models. So. I recommend you listen to Don for his winds forecast.

.Well looking down with the GOES/Google image is hard to take your eye away from Himicane Norbert. More about him in a minute.
First this sea has a mix of light whispys and fluffys here and there however it looks like the sea will be seeing mostly sunshine today.
Horbert’s counterclockwise spiral is starting to send some clouds over the cape and up the sea a ways.
Looking to the south along the Mexican Riviera this morning. I can see where sporadic thunderbumpers grew and then blew out from about Manzanillo to Puerta Vallarta last night. Puerta Vallarta had almost 2 inches of rain in the past 24 hours.
Looking further to the south, way south, below the ITCZ, at around 12N 89W there is a low that the potential for a tropical depression. Hopefully I won’t be reporting any more in this puppy.
OK , back to Baja and our current Himicane. Norbert is currently a strong Category 2 Himicane. I can finally see a very distinct eye. He has strengthened dramatically yesterday and is now forecast to become only the second Major Hurricane of the season today. Forecast tracks are looking like it is going to make landfall about Mag Bay late Friday or early Saturday morning as a strong Category 2 Himicane. He is currently at 16.1N , 110.0W or about 425 miles south of the cape. Models are showing that Norbert could become a category 4 hurricane before making landfall. When it does make landfall hurricane winds could extend out as far as 50 miles and tropical storm winds (that’s between 48 & 63 knots) could extend out for 100 miles. Each update of Norbert has the track moved a bit more to the north and right now it looks like it will cross around Puerto Escondido. The sphere of influence now includes La bay on the peninsula. This now looks like most of Baja Sur will be getting heavy rain. Those of you in areas prone to flood be prepared for flooding and take appropriate actions. Those of you on the hook, same thing. It looks like we are in for a hell of a weekend. This is a serious storm.
I normally take a look at the west coast of America, but there is not much going on up there and I’m running out of time this morning. So, Back down here today, it looks like moderate winds with lots of sunshine and somewhat cooler day and nighttime temperatures.

.

..At 2am Himicane Norbert was at 15.1N 106.4w or about 585 miles SSE of the cape. That’s ballpark about the Manzanillo latitudes. Winds are currently a bit below hurricane status but are forecasted to increase to the 70+K ranges this afternoon. It continues to be a hooker and is forecast to make landfall about todo santos on Sat morning and then cross the cape a bit south of La Paz and be in the center of the sea around midnight on Saturday.

.Looking down into the sea this morning I can’t see any clouds and it does not look like we had any passing over during the night.
So looking south along the Mexican Riviera this morning. Well, I can see a small cell building between Mazatlan and Puerta Vallarta right now and that looks like the only thunderbumper activity along the Riviera for the past 24 hours. No rain reported at any of the stations. It is however overcast from about Cabo Corrienties south to Acapulco this morning.
To the west of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo this morning we have our current tropical problem, tropical storm Norbert. He is forecast to be a Himicane later today.
The 2am National Hurricane Center graphic shows Norbert will be southwest of the cape Thursday morning and it looks like Norbert is going to be a hooker. The graphic show 24 hours later, Friday morning, Himicane Norbert to be plutoed to a tropical storm and hooking back to the east with a track headed directly at Mag Bay with the sphere of influence including the southern and central sea south to about Santa Rosalia. So it looks like we will be getting some rain on our pumpkin patch later in the week. Hopefully not a lot. I’ll keep you updated.
Looking now at the west coast of the Baja peninsula I can see just a light marine layer along the Baja coast from Turtle Bay north to the border this morning.
So looking now up to the west coast of America. Well last weekend’s storm is moving off to the east leaving mostly clear skies over the western conus. Well I can see some residual clouds over Arizona this morning, but they are forecast to exit as well,
At this top of this image I can see another strong Pacific storm racing through Washington this morning bringing a lot of rain with it and snow levels down to 3500 ft. Off in the Alaskan gulf I can see another one. It should arrive later in the week.
It looks like the southwest will be seeing warmer temperatures as the week progresses with high pressure moving back in.
Back down here, hopefully I can get the winds forecast to within 10 to 15 knots of actual today. Nothing I looked at yesterday indicated we would have those honking winds.
And today I’m again forecasting very moderate winds for the sea. Let see how that goes. That and lots of sun and perhaps you might want to find that blanket you put away last spring.

.My first look down this morning is with the GOES Google Earth real-time image way up looking down at the western US and Mexico. I can see sister Maria well on her way to Hawaii this morning. A mere shadow of her former self. Zooming down I can see some whispys moving down the outside this morning that may slide across northern Baja today. I can see a few whispys scattered around the sea, but not many. Switching satellites now to get a better look at the Mexican Riviera. Pretty much solid cloud cover from about Ixtapa Zihuatanejo to Acapulco this morning. Off shore there I can see our latest tropical storm. Brother Norbert. He has finally started to move and the models are now better able to get a handle on where Norbert will go. The current 5 day track is to keep moving northwest and become a Himicane later today. At the end of the 5 day track I can see a slight hook to the east, which would put it back on track to hit the cape. The forecast does not go out that far yet, so where Himicane Norbert will actually go they have not figured out yet. The only thing for certain is the Norbert will be in the vicinity of the cape in 4-5 days.
So, looking now at the west coast of the Baja peninsula this morning. It looks like the San Ignacio lagoon is the only place that has any fog this morning. The rest of the coast from there north has just a light marine layer hugging the coast.
Looking now at the west coast of America. I can see that cold low front has moved off the west coast and is now just to the east of 4 corners. It will trigger snow and thunderbumpers as it moves through the Great Basin today. Colorado should get a good mix of rain and snow. For the rest of the basin they can expect scattered showers and cooler temperatures. As high pressure fills in behind this system temperatures will start to warm up again for the southwest. In fact the entire western conus.
Back down here we starting to see some cooler temperatures as well as some fairly significant drops in humidity. Here at el Burro Cove we barely made a Beer Index with 106 yesterday. Well autumn seem to be creeping up on us. Today should be a delightful day with lots of sun, moderate winds and somewhat lower temperatures.

For ID here is WB6 Papa Kilo Hotel .Looking down into the sea this morning I can see the sister Maria is now a hurricane and well to the west of Baja, however she is sending a plume of clouds off her northern quadrant back over the cape this morning creating cloudy conditions for the cape area and the southern crossing, and from Mazatlan to Cabo Corrienties will be seeing probably mostly whispys today. All from sister Maria which is about a 1000 miles to the west. The cape area may see a thunderbumper or two from this spin-off plume.
As for the sea it self I can’t see any clouds at all from La Paz north.
So back to the Riviera. Not a lot of thunderbumper activity last night or this morning except I can see where there was a cell that is building up over Manzanillo right now. I can’t tell if it’s raining there or not.
Looking further south, down past Acapulco, actually 240 miles south southwest of Acapulco we have another addition to our tropical season. Tropical depression 15 Echo. It is forecast to become a tropical storm later today. He will be Norbert. Currently 15 Echo is stationary, however it’s forecast to start a northwest track, paralleling the Riviera and heading directly for the cape. Norbert is forecast to be a Himicane by Tues and by Wednesday be around the Manzanillo latitudes. Not much sense in talking about annual statistics of hurricane paths in October. Norbert WILL be a himacane and WILL in the vicinity of the cape next week. Right now it’s too early to tell which side of the cape Norbert will be when he reaches there. I’ll keep you posted.
Ok for some better news and weather I’ll take a look now at the west coast of Baja. Just a light marine layer hugging the northern coast this morning.
So Looking now at the west coast of America. The first significant winter storm of the year has moved onto the west coast. Rain from San Diego to Seattle. The entire western conus has cloud cover. I can see rain falling from Idaho to the 4 corners area right now. I can see snow falling around Lake Tahoe. Winter storm warning have been issued for many locations from Colorado to California for today. They are talking about significant snowfall above 8500 ft. Along the border southwesterly winds are expected to increase into the 15-25 mph ranges with gusts to 35 by this afternoon. It will be cooling off a bit while this system passes through.
Well we have nasty weather to the north of us. Some potential nasty stuff to the south, but here in Baja today we will continue to have great autumn weather. We are starting to see the humidity drop a little. That’s good. Moderate winds in the sea today along with lots of sun, and perhaps a thunderbumper or two around in those places that we are used to seeing them. The cape area also has some potential for a thunderbumper or two today. But all in all it looks like another great day.

For ID here is WB6 Papa Kilo Hotel .Looking down with the Google/GOES satellite from way way up. The Baja peninsula is the only place from the North Pole to Acapulco that is cloud free on the west coast. Zooming down now I can’t see any clouds in the Sea of Cortez this morning. And looking over at the Mexican Riviera I can see a big fluffy right over Mazatlan, and it looks like Puerta Vallarta had a bit of rain yesterday afternoon: about a half inch. Looking further down the coast to about 200 miles south of Acapulco I can see that low that would appear to be the last threat of tropical weather for the season. It’s moving very slowly to the northwest as it has for the past several days.
Yesterday I mentioned that there was “lingering model uncertainty” about the potential for development. This morning the National Hurricane Center has better defined the potential, saying the system still has a medium potential (20-50%) chance of becoming a tropical depression within the next 48 hours. Well even if it does it is becoming increasingly unlikely that it will affect our Baja weather. But you never know, so I’ll be keeping an eye on it.
And Sister Maria, our current Tropical Storm, has packed her bags and is on the hot track for Hawaii this morning.
So looking back at the west coast of the Baja peninsula I can see just a thin marine layer from about Pt. San Quinten to San Diego this morning.
So looking now up to the west coast of America. Winter is descending on the west coast. I can see rain moving in from the Pacific into Northern California from about the bay area north. This should spread to the south as far as la la land and perhaps San Diego by late tomorrow. This is being referred to as a significant storm system and it is going to cool things off for the west this weekend. It should drop down into the Great Basin, fore corners area this weekend. Further south the southwest Arizona may see a few sprinkles, along with breezy and windy conditions.
This system should have moved east by next Wednesday.
Well that what’s going on to the north of us. It’s nice to be here. We should have light to moderate winds today along with continuing warm temperatures in the mid to high 90s today. We are starting to see some decline in the humidity readings, however I’m thinking our beer index will still be around 110 today. So lots of sun in store for Baja and most of the Mexican Riviera today. Just another great autumn day.
By the way yesterday was Mulege Day making Mulege the one day capitol of Baja sur, and by law the guv was required to be in town. So sort of big doings in Mulege yesterday.

.Well looking down into the sea this morning I can see a few whispys. I can see a few clouds in the southern crossing area. It also looks like the cape area including La Paz had a good sized thunderbumper over it yesterday afternoon. No rain was reported at the nearby reporting stations though. Dick, (Zulu Golf) reported that it looked like they had rain back in the sierras. This is good. We need to fill up those reservoirs to keep the golf courses green.
So looking south now. Mazatlan to Manzanillo was thunderbumper free for the past 24 hours. Manzanillo south it looks like it has been thunderbumper city for the past 24 hours. It looks like most of these thumpers are building close to shore and then moving off in a due west direction. Lots of moisture in the air down there.
Ok lets see what cooking in our tropical kitchen this morning. Our tropical depression has now been given a name. She is Marie. Marie is about 600 southwest of the cape and heading out to Hawaii this morning with no threat to the Baja peninsula.
We do however have another threat this late in the season. It is a 1009 low that is about 260 miles south of Acapulco this morning and moving slowly west. Coordinates are 13N 99W so you can see it’s pretty far south. The system has lost some of its earlier organization; however the good folks at the National Hurricane Center are saying that this system may intensify to a tropical depression later today. Although it is very late in the season the sea surface temperatures and environmental conditions would still support a tropical storm. If this storm does develop we will have one of those “lingering model uncertainty” things determining just where it will go. I love that phrase, “lingering model uncertainty”. Layman’s language it means “We don’t have a clue”.
OK, enough tropical. Looking at the west coast of the peninsula this morning. I can see a light marine layer along the coast, but no fog.
So, looking now up to the west coast of America where they are getting ready to receive the first significant winter storm of the year. A 989 low cold front is poised off the northern California coast and will start moving ashore this morning. Oregon and Washington will see rain today, and Northern California tomorrow and southern California and the great basin this weekend. Snow levels will initially be around 7000 ft.
Well that should cool things off a bit down here this weekend. We should see some more degrading of the Yuma low, which brings our southern winds, as Arizona cools down this weekend.
Back down here we will be having light to moderate winds in the sea today. Humidity will remain high though. I’m thinking that we should see a break in the humidity by this weekend. Temperatures will remain in the mid to high 90s today.
September our BEER INDEX averaged 112. This month we will return to the HEAT INDEX with the average around 91. October’s average Temperature here in the cove is a pleasant 88 degrees. It’s almost time to put the liner in your SpeedO. It won’t be long before the migrations starts south from the summer hunting grounds.

.Ok looking down into the sea this morning I can see just a few whispys here and there. Looking out in the Pacific, just a few whispys out there as well. So looking over at the mainland. No thunderbumper activity in the Sonora area in the past 24 hours. So looking south now to the Mexican Riviera. No thunderbumper activity from Acapulco north. At Acapulco I can see a cell building and moving off shore to join a band of thumpers moving up from Central America. They are all headed in a West Northwest direction and then loosely connecting up with our latest tropical depression 14 echo which is currently at 16N 116W which is about 530 miles southwest of the cape right now. It is forecast to keep heading west and pose no threat to Baja except perhaps a slight chance of rain in the cape area.
There is a second low system southwest of the gulf of Tehuantepec that the National Hurricane Center is monitoring for any development. This is in that area that I mentioned earlier that the qscatt was showing 30-40 knot winds. They are forecasting that the threat is minimal; however should it develop its potential track would be right up the center of the sea. Well hopefully that won’t happen. It’s getting pretty late in the season.
Looking now over at the west coast of the peninsula for any fog that would impede any passage makers today. Nada. Just a light marine layer that will move off the coast as the sun comes up.
So looking now at the west coast of America. It’s the lull before the storm up there. Today is forecast to stay warm all over the western conus. Southern California and Sacramento valley cities will continue to see temperatures in the 90s today.
At the top of this image I can see two big honking lows making a move on the Pacific north coast. They should arrive tomorrow bringing rain from about Cape Mendocino north. This system developed over the central north Pacific from the remains of a typhoon that struck Taiwan on Sunday. So it looks like the Great Northwest is getting ready for its first strong winter storm. It will arrive in the Great Basin this weekend. We have that “lingering model uncertainty” thing as to how much and what will get wet in the southwest this morning. Tomorrow I’ll probably have a better idea.
But back down here in Baja we should be having a marvelous day. Light winds. Lots of sun. It does however look like the humidity will be with us until at least this weekend, so we should see the beer index around 115 today again today. Sounds like a good day to find your favorite watering hole and plop down under a fan. Enjoy it our fall is just around the corner.
