Christmas is coming way to soon. Many people are hoping Santa brings them a shiny new camera. But what if santa is unsure of what camera to get. The following is a guide to what's available from budget minded point and shoots to exotic micro four thirds.
The Point and Shoot This is the camera for people like me that don't want to take a photography class. These cameras can fit in your pocket or purse. Some are waterproof. They can be reasonably priced or really expensive. All these cameras take good pictures. The zoom, however, is limited. One thing to consider is the battery and memory. Proprietary batteries can be expensive. Some have "special" memory cards. Cameras that use SD cards are generally more economical in the memory department.
Super Zooms These are larger point and shoot cameras that look a lot like DSLR's. The great feature is their zoom. For a modest price one can have a decent camera with great zoom for much cheaper than a DSLR. These are lighter and don't require multiple lenses. The down side is that these cameras are a bit slow. There is two second or more wait between shots. The focus can be slow. Picture quality ranges between pretty good and mediocre with the occaisional "WOW". Here is a link to a review that picked their best point and zooms for 2012. Link
DSLR's These are the gold standard of great photographs providing you know how to use one. I stayed away from these for a long time. Several years ago me and my first digital camera, a Kodak Easy Share, were snapping photos at a live butterfly exhibit in Ft. Forth. A man with a camera set up that likely cost more than my car, proudly showed off his photos of a blue morpho on his view finder. They were terrible. Didn't have the heart to show him the great shots I was getting on a cheap camera. Today, new users can avoid the problem of needing to know a lot about photography. The DSLR makers have come up with entry level cameras that are both point and shoot, plus serious camera. So while you are learning how to shoot in manual, you can still have really great pictures in auto mode. The camera guy at work swears by the Nikon 5100 as the best entry level DSLR. I'm sure the Canon Rebel people are saying boo hiss, but I really don't know the difference so am going with this recommendation. Here is a link to the 5100. Link
Micro Four Thirds Cameras These exotic beauties are supposed to be mini dslr's. The camera bodies and lenses are lighter. The Panasonic G2 and up series are also supposed to be excellent video cameras as well. The system was designed jointly by Olympus and Panasonic. They boast being able to use many types of lenses if there is an adaptor. The caveat here is that if it is not a lense designed specifically for the brand of camera, the lense motor may not work. The resulting camera shake could screw your shots up without a tripod. Just keep that in mind to use lenses designed for the brand of camera. Here is a great link to learn about Micro Four Thirds. Be sure to click on everything to get a good idea what these mini-dslrs do. Link
Hope you found this helpful. Please add you own opinions. What kind of camera you have, what you like and dislike about it. Heck, even write down your wildest dream camera and lenses.
I missed commenting on the Broken Bow blog and the accompanying photos. What a beautiful fall day you got to enjoy!
On to the current topic: Were those shots taken with your Fuji HS20, in the Super Zoom category? Or have you sprung for something higher up the food chain?
Member Since: June 21, 2004 Posts: 49 Comments: 2425
Hi Briarcraft!, these shots were with the HS20. I was shooting on the A dial aperature priority set at F4.5 My camera seems to like that setting. Also took some shots in EXR low light high iso setting and of course my favorite, sport mode. The best were in aperature priority mode.

I certainly would be tickled if someone gave me a Nikon or Olympus DSLR, but after using Canon products for over 20 years, I would pick the Rebel for familiarity reasons.

If your going to buy a camera for Christmas this year you can research it at cnet.com they truthfully review almost every camera along all lines ..
My dream is a Canon EOS 5D Mark III .. Ah but only a dream ...

Whenever I get the idea that I might get a new camera, I go to dpreview to check them out. They have a nifty buying guide and more information than I can understand while still providing info I do need. I have researched all the cameras that have been mentioned on your and others' blogs when the subject comes up but haven't even chosen one, let alone bought. So, I'm no use, LOL Think I'll go back to ogle your previous blog's photos again - the leaves outside my window won't change color for awhile, yet :)

I followed your link on the super zooms and guess what came top of the list? My new Panasonic! It is a 'super' super zoom, and I love it. In fact it is my thirds 'bridge' camera in the Panasonic range.
With such a range of prices, it was expected that the performance and results of these cameras would vary drastically. However, even with the differing focal lengths, the images are in some ways quite consistent. All are a compromise on the quality available from a DSLR, but all offer advantages over regular compact cameras.
( They tested - Canon Powershot, Fuji finepix, GE X500, Leica V-Lux 3, Nikon Coolpix P510, Sony cyber-shot and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ150 ~ my camera)
"So the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ150 offers the best solution for most photographers. It is well priced and delivers great results, holding fine detail even at higher ISO sensitivities and providing raw shooting. The zoom and stabilisation are impressive, and it is easy to operate for both the new user and experienced photographer."
PS - I wouldn't say no to the Canon EOS 5D in my stocking on Christmas morning, either Wabit :-)

Hi Ylee, Canon certainly does have a familiar feel. That's some good user interface engineering.
Hi Wabit, CNET does look like a good site. I really do enjoy window shopping online.
HI Shore, thankfully for us Garland is far far away, okay about 30 some miles. Haven't found anything on local news yet.
Hi Sp, so many cameras, so many choices. With the super zooms, one can always keep getting new models as they get better. With DSLR's one pretty much is married to the base camera and lenses cost as much or more than a new super zoom.
Hi Sandi, how great is it to see your camera listed as Best. The pictures and zoom you posted have made it my next choice if I get another super zoom.
Hi Reno, I'm actually surprised you have a point and shoot. I always thought the pictures you've been posting were from a DSLR.

If I want to buy a new camera, I ask my son-in- law!!! He has really gotten into photography in a big way. He's actually been on a couple of photo shoots with a pro as a 2nd camera.
He has also done photo shoots for families in the twins club they belong to. I'd link you to one of his photos, but hubby just put the movie in!!
Next time. But, real quick, I'm a point and shoot gal!
Member Since: February 21, 2005 Posts: 191 Comments: 14190
So, how bout posting your favorite shots with your favorite camera. Or, post a picture of your favorite camera.
Em, are you sure you want me to do that! hehehe
OK, I'll try to limit myself to one or two ..... dozen, and I will use photos from WU, and not Flickr, so Ylee can see them, too.
This show the clarity of the zoom. I was about 20 feet away, standing on the edge of the lake, using the 24x zoom, but the detail is really clear.
Exposure 0.004 sec (1/250) Aperture f/5.2 Focal Length 108 mm (Full Zoom) ISO Speed 100
And this one I took from the TV during the Olympics. It is quite crisp, and doesn't contain any of the lines that can be captured when you take shots from TV's, which shows just how fast the shutter speed is.
Exposure 0.002 sec (1/640) Aperture f/4.3 Focal Length 38.9 mm ISO Speed 200
As Arnie said - "I'll be back!"
Happy Saturday to you:-)

Just a brief greeting with a photo collage from my last painting, and a quote from a poem:

Here's Mt St Helens from May 16, on my first day trip, 2 months after my hip replacement. Using my HS20 in EXR mode.

My Cannon powershot A710IS is proving durable (I've been known to ruin cameras in storms), though great for point & shoot..crap next to what many of what ya'll are shooting with:) I'll second Wabit's choice for a dream cam.
Sandi~ 20'???? WOW..

I have a Canon PowerShot 2000IS. 10.0 megapixels. It does very well with low light, which is why my SIL recommended it. I also took the videos with it.
I'll have to use my lap top to put my favorite image here. I'm not sure how to link photos from WU on an iPad. Maybe Sandi can tell me. :)
But here is a picture my SIL took of my grands when he was scoping out a photo shoot spot.

Good Morning, great shots. Digital cameras really are the greatest things since sliced bread.
Hi Briarcraft, the Mount St Helens shot is neat. It always amazes me to see a shot by someone I know of something famous. It's not just a pic from a travel magazine.
Hi Skypony, I second the being hard on cameras part. I've dropped mine once or twice. Have dropped the teleconverter lense a few times. Could you imagine dropping a $1200 lense. Eeeek. By the way, getting shots of the space shuttle...priceless.
Hi Karen, that is an awesome shot catching them in mid run with feet off the ground. Don't you just want to hug your camera for making those shots.

Good morning GardenGrrl. I'll have to take a camera along on a walk with Abbey and see if I can catch her bounding through the snow. My biggest problem with the digital cameras is the brightness of the LCD display. I find it hard to see the display while outdoors in bright sunlight. Enjoy your day.

Here is another of my shots, taken on full zoom from my trip to Yorkshire at the end of March. The description I wrote was....
'All the little lambs were sleeping this afternoon as the temperatures shot up to 74F!! Far too warm to wear a sheep-skin coat!!'
It was a wonderful week, the sun shone for the whole time, and nary a drop of rain fell. It was probably the best week of this year, weather wise, as it began to rain on the 9th April and has done so, on and off, ever since!!
How much work do you get to do this week... Do you get Thursday off or are you covering for someone again!

Good Morning All,looks to be warmer today. Already 56f.
Hi Plapman, I know what you mean about the view finder. Can't see whats on my cellphone either when I'm outside. Kind of miss having actual buttons on the phone. If you get a camera with a view finder that you can put your eye to, that works a lot better outside.
Hi Briar, thanks. You have posted some pretty decent photos. I remember the iris collection you posted. that was really cool. Have you tried doing long zoom macro photos yet? You can zoom in on a flower with a tiny bug from 15ft away, hit the first macro button on the camera and get a really cool shot without chasing off the little buggy. Wonder if you could do that with a single cat eye?
Hi Sandi, so glad you are getting some glorious days. Perhaps we could shift some of that rain to our dryer states. You know, I had no idea that ISO could go below 100. Is that with a point n shoot or your dslr? It's a great shot of a back lit subject. This is my long weekend so off Wednesday and Thursday Thanks-Giving for a change. Hooray! Btw, just thought about this, would you mind giving some tips with your pictures on how you get these great shots...no pressure ;)

Hi GG - I had to go on a search for the camera I used for the shot of the lamb, as I took both my Canon and my Panasonic and couldn't remember which I had used. It was my Panasonic DMC-FZ45, the previous camera I traded in for the FZ150.
I would willingly tell you how I get my shots, but 9 times out of 10 I let the camera do it, with it set on the 'Intelligent Auto' setting.
"INTELLIGENT AUTO. Set the Model dial to the red iA camera icon and press the Shutter button halfway down to prompt the camera to identify the scene and set the camera appropriately."
To achieve the ISO of 80, which is possible in the Panasonic cameras, I had the +/- EV (Exposure Value Compensation setting)set at +1/3
Speeking of the DSLR's. I use Nikon D90's in our 3 studio's at work. We shoot automtive components for catalogs, websites and other markrting stuff. I personally use a Canon 60D. You cant go wrong with either camera.

OK, on my desktop. The picture I posted below of the boys is not mine. It was taken by my son-in-law with his camera. I don't know what he uses, but it's a fancy dancy one!
Here are a couple of my favorites taken with my point and shoot. Both lucky shots!
This bee was having fun on my poppies. I took so many trying to capture him. I think this was the only one that turned out well.
Shadows of the Seal Beach pier.

Hi GG! I love my DSLR Nikon D90. The only thing I would put on my christmas list is a wide angle lens and a flash that would sync with my highest shutter speed, I would love to stop those hummers wings!
I, like Sandi have many fav shots, but I love my yotes so here is a couple of my favorites of them.
And I love bears!
Okay a hummer shot

Staying in bed for a while today... I was most uncomfortable yesterday.... I think the nerves are repairing themselves...... lots of stinging and a burning sensation. Did you get this?
I am so glad you actually get to celebrate Thanksgiving at home, without having to go into work...... That is definitely something to be thankful for:-)

Good Morning All, it is a glorious day here. 56f, no wind, clear skies. We are going up to Main Street Grapevine to kick around, look at Christmassy stuff and have brunch...as soon as the spouse wakes up. Let's hope I get atleast 45 minutes here to quietly blog.
Hi Sandy, that is an awesome tutorial blog. I can understand it. Infact, I think I will give it it's own special comment section.
Hi Mobal, you sound like the go to guy for specialty shooting indoors. Once I spent about two days photo graphing chocolate. The darn subjects kept "disappearing though. Or, they would melt under all the light. Do you shoot with Nikon lenses on your Canon? A guy at work swears by Canon bodies but loves Nikon "glass". (I started a Nikon vs Canon debate at work).
Hi Karen, love the color of the flower and bee. Nice macro, getting the pollen to show up so defined. As for the pier, wow, nothing wrong with lucky shots. It's all about light and shadows and you found the right place at the right time for sure.
Hi Calpoppy, you do get some awesome nature shots. So you have adopted your yotes as your wild doggies eh? Nice healthy looking guys. The shallow depth of field really show cases them as individuals. With the bear I'm glad you opted for greater depth of field because bears, streams and woods just go together. The hummingbird(s), dang nice catch.
Hi Prose, thanks for the holiday wishes and the Emerson poems. He has always been one of my favorites. I "get" him.
Hi Sandi, it is indeed a time to be thank full. I think this is the 2nd Thanksgiving in a few years I have had with family.
Member Since: March 25, 2007 Posts: 218 Comments: 7268
Eeeek! No.. I've gone as far as borrowed the kids' Kid Zoom camera during downpours & floods. Pictures were far from stellar but it didn't cost me a few hundred.
Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I would like to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving, filled with family, friends, food and gratitude for what we do have. I promise to try to live up to this quote all year long!

Hope you had a great day yesterday, and unless you have been taken in for cover, you should have today off to recover!
The above photo was taken in last year with my little handbag** camera, the FS11. It is small enough to fit into a pocket, and is a basic P&S. It is also in girly pink! lol
**A handbag is what you call a purse, although a purse to us is what you call a wallet, I think! Confused? You should be!!

Hi All and Happy Holidays! The Season has officially started.
Hi Skyepony, I've dropped my $220 dollar lense a few times. Glad I put a UV lense on it.
Hi Watchinthesky, great canal photo.
Hi Alley, thanks for the warm greeting from Canada.
Hi Calpoppy, that is a total hoot.
Hi Sp, Yeah Turkey power and days off to enjoy it.
Hi Sandi, beautiful rainbow.
Hi Rebel, happy days back atcha.
Hi Karen, good quote always and a great way to remember a great man.
Hi Briarcraft, laughter is what makes the world best.
Okay, went to Dallas Chinese Lantern Festival and took a ton of pictures. Will make that another blog. In the meantime here are two pics from it. These were shot in "sports mode" with the EV taken down three stops.
Member Since: March 25, 2007 Posts: 218 Comments: 7268
Good Mornning, it's back to work for the long week. My Thanks Giving time off was really great and well spent. Did something fun every day of it.
Hi Sandi, can you believe I got an AC for the lily with the fountain behind it? I'm really liking the EV setting because I have no idea how to set my aperture and speed for that kind of photo. I know a fast shutter speed works well for lights so just set it in sports mode and adjusted EV.
Hi Plapman, hope you and Abbey are keeping warm on those walks.
Hi Prose, thanks. It was really neat seeing all that glowing artwork. A lot of those pieces are really huge.
Hi Ylee, slowly but surely I'll start downloading them to WU for the new blog.

Eeeek! No.. I've gone as far as borrowed the kids' Kid Zoom camera during downpours & floods. Pictures were far from stellar but it didn't cost me a few hundred.
Happy Thanksgiving!!!
A favorite from my Canon Powershot -
Happy Thanksgiving dear ones.
I'm so glad to read that you get to have T-Day on T-Day this year! Happy Thanksgiving!
Exposure 0.003 sec (1/400)
Aperture f/4.0
Focal Length 10.5 mm
ISO Speed 80
Hope you had a great day yesterday, and unless you have been taken in for cover, you should have today off to recover!
The above photo was taken in last year with my little handbag** camera, the FS11. It is small enough to fit into a pocket, and is a basic P&S. It is also in girly pink! lol
**A handbag is what you call a purse, although a purse to us is what you call a wallet, I think! Confused? You should be!!
And Calpoppy's #39 is worth a 1000 words and a chuckle, too.
Stunning captures of difficult subjects. Brilliant!!!
Glad you had fun! :-)
Enjoy your day.
