Hi All, thanks for visiting my blog while I was gone and keeping an eye on Syd and Roxie. Good catch BriarCraft. No telling what would have happened if you didn't find Syd abusing burglars :D

Had a really great time. Visited Mom. While in Orlando we found out there was a Star Trek exibition. This is the beta version, they plan to expand.

Found out two interesting bits of Star Trek trivia.
The first "red shirt" to die in a Star Trek episode was in the credits as "Jimmy Jones". He later went by the name of Reverend Jim Jones who founded a cult which became cryptically famous for drinking Kool-Aid.

Star Trek was progressive so of course during that time it was produced by Desi-Lou Productions. (They also did I Love Lucy, the first TV show to have a married couple share one bed instead of twin beds). Well, always pushing the envelope, they had the first inter-racial kiss which was between Capt. Kirk and Lt. Uhura. This prompted a flood of hate mail and death threats to Nichelle Nichols. She felt she had become a burden to the show and was going to quit. Dr. Martin Luther King personally asked her not to because she was a role model to black people. Whoopie Goldberg sums it up best when she recalled the first time seeing Lt Uhura on Star Trek. She jumped up hollering to everyone in the house, "Get over here, there's a black lady on TV and she's not a maid!"

So here are some pics from the exibit. It included a full size re-creation of the original bridge on Enterprise. Got to sit in the captains chair. How cool is that?

This is the view from the captains chair. The screen was constantly changing.

These are original costumes.

Glad the little green guy is hanging in there. He's looking healthy, too. Since he's gone totally feral, maybe you could provide him with a snug nesting place/bird house to call his own. I read at parrotchronicles about an Amazon parrot that survived a New England winter by taking shelter in a squirrel's nest.

Rebel Parakeet Lives!

Inspite of some very cold night temps in the 40's, the little green guy showed up at the feeder today. He has gone totally feral. Flys off as soon as I get outside. Still, am trying to catch him for the winter to release him come spring.

Well, this evening or tomorrow will start part two of the vacation blog.

Hi Tony, yeah the whole needing more rest thing is a pain in the wazzoo. So much I want to do and so little waking time.

Ylee, he he he, Romulan he, he. There was a comedy mock debate on 30 Rock where one guy is saying "And just how do you explain Mit Romney being a mermaid?"

The other guy says, "Not a mermaid you idiot, he's a Mormon."

"A Mormon, come on, that's just crazy."

Hi Sp, yeah, you have to like a President that likes Star Trek. It was pretty darn cold here for a few days. Glad the furnace is ready. Today, however, is a put the A/C back on day. It will go like this throughout winter. But darn right, if it's cold out, make a cake!

Hi LW Finn, thanks. Checked out your book Kun Lun. Really good.

What a great vacation! Worth it just for the Star Trek exhibit but the rest sounds wonderful, too, and I look forward to hearing (well, reading) the next installment!
Nichelle Nichols was on site at LAX after they landed the shuttle. She introduced the speakers and said a few words of her own. Very cool. Also, Obama is a Trekkie ;)
Glad the “kids” handled your absence so well!

I did the furnace maintenance thing yesterday, too, just in case. It's supposed to be very warm again by Sunday but might get chilly enough for heat in the evening in the meantime. Have to say, it is nice to be able to use the oven again, at least. Might bake a cake just because I can.

Goodmorning GardenGrrl.
The nap is nice but a 3 hour sleep sure cuts into my days activities.
Enjoy your day.

Good Morning All, good sleeping weather, it is cold and overcast. Got my 12 hours in and feel great now.

Hi Plapman, yep it is time to dig around for the winter gear. One would think after so many years I would have a "one place" for the hat, gloves, scarf, but noooo every October it becomes an easter egg hunt for the stuff.

Hi Prose, we were having the same weather Monday. Today I'm hoping for rain. It is overcast so the grey may as well make itself useful :)

Hi LC, 112f! Holy Cow, that is nuts for October. Was tickled to find the Star Trek exhibit. We always tend to do my choosen activities so it was fun to find something like this for my favorite trekkie. Although I have to say with the regular exposure I'm starting to get into this.

Hi Ylee, ya know we have a night shift opening where I work. Hardly any overtime.

Hi Briar, the furnace is ready, have an extra thermo-coupler, bring on the cold. (okay I'm kidding about the bring on the cold part). Oh Roxie is such a social butterfly. At the kennel they nick named her "The Greeter" because at dog camp she has to greet everyone human or dog that comes through the door. We really should run her for political office.

Hi Calpoppy, I think that is what I like about Florida. It just calls to something primative in my hind brain. All the green jungley stuff. Plus it has been so dry and brown in Texas that green was really nice to see.

Hi BeachFoxx, thanks for coming by. Totally understand why inspite of the hurricanes people would want to live in Florida. Am so ready to get my Jimmy Buffet on.

Hi Skyepony, ya know on my next trip to Florida I am so going to have to do a road trip to the space center. Hopefully there will be a launch going on.

Well thanks everyone for stopping by my little blog porch.

When I was in Florida visiting my youngest when he was stationed there I could not get over going to a camp ground where there was nothing but palm trees. No pine trees, freaked me out! I thought this is so primeval! The birds are amazing there though, but no mountains and this Western gal has got to have mountains.

The weather is cooling, clouds in the sky, time to start cleaning up the greenhouse and the gardens. Have a great week!

You know why Roxie wants to sniff everything while on walks, don't you? To furpeople, sniffing things is just catching up on the news -- kind of like people reading the newspaper. Inquiring minds want to know... Who's been by here? How long ago? What mood were they in? What did they have for dinner last night?

Hope your furnace is in tip-top shape now, all ready to keep you comfy-cozy.

I couldn't imagine working 96 hours 20 years ago, either! ;-) Actually, this job has a lot of built in "butt time", so it's not like I'm constantly on the rockpile! :) Doesn't do much good for the waistline, lol!

Waaay cool vacation! What luck finding those Star Trek coupons.

Summer was fierce and tenacious here but we are finally falling precipitously. October started with a high of 112°. The forecast high for Thursday is just 70°. Hopefully the HVAC and the electric meter can take it easy for a while and the dogs can start growing fur instead of dropping it everywhere.

Good morning GardenGrrl.
Your right come December and January I'll think 44 is a warm day. I've dug out the winter boots, and coat and just have to look around for the warm wool lined mittens.
Have a good day.

Good Morning All. It is 43f on the blog porch this morning. Bit chilly for my taste. Roxie likes it though. *sigh* When it gets cool out she loves to sniff everything which makes the morning walk extra long. Doesn't want to listen when I tell her she is a corgi not a bloodhound.

Hi Ylee, wow, those are some hours you put in. Could not imagine 96 even 20 years ago.

Hi Plapman, my 44f will start sounding warm to you in another month. Yikes.

Hi All, can you believe yesterday we had the A/C on and today we are starting up the furnace? Just finished cleaning, filter service etc. Have all the windows open and am burning off the stink from the seasonal start of the furnace. It is supposed to get in the 40's tonight so will need heat.

Then in a few days will need the a/c again. Ah Texas.

Hi BriarCraft, the Star Trek thing was an unplanned find. Seems Star Trek has been the theme all month. The only thing that could make it better is meeting friendly ET's...or winning a large lottery so we could move to Florida and Syd could have an outdoor patio to fly around in. My sister has a HUGE screened in back porch. I want one.

Hi Ylee, Sure they make good dust mops but one thing never mentioned in the show; do tribbles poop?

Hi Plapman, the sky certainly has that grey snow sky look. Perhaps we will get some cold rain. That will work too.

Tomorrow, Sunday, is back to work. See ya all in bits and spurts through the week.

Good morning GardenGrrl.
If I could send some of our wet snow your way it would help the Texas dought problem.
I missed dropping by yesterday. The Jim Jones trivia is interesting. What a tragic happening.
have a good day.

You got to sit in the captain's chair?!?!?

See! All that forklift practice paid off. I knew you could do it!

Did you know about that exhibit before your trip? Or was that one of those happy serendipitous moments we're lucky enough to experiences every once in a while? I mean, you did have that Star Trek blog just before you went to Orlando -- where they just happen to have a full-size replica of the original Enterprise bridge. How cool is that?

Seriously though, the original Star Trek was so far ahead of its time that it got canceled after 79 episodes (September 8, 1966 to June 3, 1969). It didn't really become popular until after it went into syndication in the 70s.

Good thing you didn't bring home any tribbles. You know the trouble with tribbles is they're born pregnant. Your home is full enough with Syd and Roxie, who would both be bent out of shape if they had to compete with tribbles for love and attention.

Hi All, I am so moving to Florida when I win the lottery. After the long brown drought of Texas it was wonderful seeing so much lush green foliage...I had heard Florida was having a drought too.

So here is the itinerary; Day One arrived in Tampa, rented a car and drove to Orlando. Why you may ask. The tickets were much cheaper and the flights more conveniant. So we found our hotel, dropped off the luggage and went to visit Mom. Was quite pleased to see Mom still looks a lot younger than she is. Hoping those genes pass to me.

Day Two; Mom sleeps late so we were going to go to a bird of prey sanctuary but found coupons to the Star Trek exhibit. Then went and hung out with Mom till the late hours.

Day Three; Epcot Center. They were having their annual Food & Wine Festival so that was a no brainer. Sorry Mickey.

Day Four; drove to sisters. She and hubby rented golf carts so we could all motor around The Villages.

Day Five; Harry Potter and Hogwarts Castle!

Day Six; Lowry Zoo in Tampa.

Day Seven; Fly home in a.m.

Hi Prose, you are First!!! Wonder what would have happened if that demented jerk had gotten a regular part in Star Trek? Perhaps competition to Scientology?

Hi Ylee, We bought a few t-shirts from everywhere. Sadly the Star Trek thing did not have any my size. Was tempted to buy a tribble though :)

Hi Shore, my sister has a calico cat that looks like an over weight Miss Dixie. She has a phobia of people but has gotten better. When they first had her she would freak out at being touched. then she would run off and lick at the spot she was touched at like she was trying to get that nasty human stuff off her.
Perhaps she is Miss Dixies high strung cousin from Florida.

Hi Calpoppy, Look at all the actors that become politicians. Something scary about that personality type. I'm going to do like you and post the vacation in sections. Easier for folks to get through. Have a ton of pictures to download into computer and go through. Had camera phone, small pocket camera and slightly bigger zoom camera. Left my bigger camera at home so I could travel "light".

Hi Sandi, oh yeah, it was a great vacation. Syd of course being a prickly fellow was nonchalant about our return. Atleast he didn't try to bite us so I guess he was okay with the absence. Roxie is a bit hoarse. I think she did a lot of barking at the kennel and doggie camp.

Hi Rob, it never occured to me that "the kiss" was contraversial. I think there is some type of mental illness where some people go off the deep end about other peoples sexuality real or fictional. Unfortunatly it is so widespread they don't call it mental illness they call it religion instead.

Not to take away from your statement, but I don't remember being surprised by "the kiss". I guess it was because Kirk tended to kiss anything with a pulse. It was inevitable.

What a neat exhibition!! I bet there is quite a few actors that instead of becoming famous they became infamous!

Star Trec was quite progressive and they should pat themselves on the back for that.

So glad you has a great time! Did you go to Harry Potter at Disney World? Or is that for a future blog.

I bet Roxie and Syd were happy to see you!

Welcome home! No kidding, re: Jim Jones? I didn't know that. I still remember hearing the reports trickle out of that place in '78. I'm trying to remember... I was back in the States then, out in Berkeley. It nearly ruined Koolaid for me.

I'll bet you had a fine time - did everyone at home survive? I haven't told Dixie I'm leaving yet. I'll delay that as long as possible. She may be happy to see me go - she's still a little miffed at me for stepping on her tonight. I told her not to sleep under my chair!

What superb info! Love all of the little facts.

As to the Kook Aid drinking Jones and his duped fellows, that was a tragic, sad story. Amazing how blindly some people will follow a charlatan.

By the way, WELCOME BACK!
