Brett Farve

I'm an all-inclusive football fan. I root for my local team. I root for my friends teams. And always, I root for my favorite quarterbacks. The Manning Brothers, who can resist those guys. Donovan McNabb and his mom. Having lots of teams and individual players to cheer for makes the season so much more fun.

But Brett Farve, (be still my heart), is an icon. When I lived in Minnesota I cheered for the Vikings, but like many Vikings fans in our rivalry with Green Bay, I always had Brett Farve envy. Secretly, like many Vikings fans, I wished he was OURS. I could growl at Green Bay. Make fun of cheese heads, but could never blasphemy Brett Farve. He was just too nice of a guy, darn it.

Then the unthinkable happened. Brett Farve didn't retire in Green Bay glory, the team managers just went and kicked him to the curb for a younger, maybe hotter player. He became a symbol of what corporate America thinks of working guys that are getting a few grey hairs. Useless. Cost too much money to keep. Let's get a younger prettier one.

Sometimes it is time for older folks to retire. It's sad and never easy if they have to be given a push. But what if someone is still good at their job? What if they still have things to teach the younger ones at the trade? Skills that can be left behind to make an organization stronger when the older worker finally retires with dignity.

Brett still has skills and the fans of the Minnesota Vikings have finally had their secret dream come true. Brett Farve is OURS. Sure he would have preferred to retire with Green Bay, but when you are jilted, you head to the suitor who has always loved you and offers a new home, new respect.

Todays game at Lambeau Field was kind of like, "The First Wives Club meets the NFL". But it wasn't just management that kicked Brett Farve to the curb after 16 years of devoted service. Sixteen years of building a Green Bay dynasty. Traditions. Fun. And yes, fidelity. Brett Farve never trolled for more dollars with another franchise at the height of his career. The corporation sent him away and the Green Bay fans turned their backs on him for wanting to still do what he loves.

To all the people at Lambeau Field who booed Brett Farve throughout the game, I only have this to say; 38 to 26.

Keep Rockin #4!!! I've always been your fan.

Good Morning, I often wonder why AARP and the Boomers don't get a publicist for aging. Now is the time to sell Silver as the true Gold.

Hi Tony, last week it was cold and rainy, this week it is spring again. Gotta love Texas.

Hi Surfmom, thanks. I write best when I feel strongly about something. Loyalty, fairness, the various glues of goodness that keep the world from de-volving into something meaningless. And when I can't think of any good things, there is always chocolate ;-)

Hi Shore, that poem is from a book by Edna St Vincent Millay called; "A Few Figs From Thistles". It's part of a set called First Fig and Second Fig.

First Fig
My candle burns at both ends;
It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes and oh, my friends--
It gives a lovely light!

Second Fig
Safe upon the solid rock the ugly houses stand;
Come and see my shining palace built upon the sand.

Hi Prose, Yes, ageism is such a cruel thing that even older people help perpetrate upon their peers. I think we should start a campaign about how "Anti-wrinkle and anti-grey" products all cause cancer...of the spirit. We earned these wrinkles, laugh lines and grey hairs. (Okay, the hot flashes, there needs to be a cure for that) but grey hair, that's a good thing.

Hi Calpoppy, this is why we are friends, we both like still Brett Farve with or without the Packers. It was hard not to use harsh words for the boo-hoos.

Hi SP, not at all surprised that you "get it" too. And you can mention any team you like here if they make you happy.

I'd say the fans are booing the wrong person, no? All part of the game, though.
Favre is an amazing player and worth watching. I missed the Packers game - but did see him play against the Steelers last week.
Oops. Should I not have mentioned that one here? ;)

Great blog GG! I had the opportunity in October, while out to dinner to watch Brett go against the Packers. It was a great game, my other half who is not a sports fan thought that Favre played incredibly well. He has the same spirit and leadership that he did when he was with the Pack. It brought back memories of when my sons would be wearing their Brett Favre jerseys and getting all excited about the big game. Shame on the Packer fans for booing him!

Hurrah for Brett and the Vikings!

Unfortunately what you say in your blog is very true. Experience and age are not appreciated, pretty faces seem to be preferred. Not just in football but in every working field. Yes, including the teaching field. Pretty faces in turn will be the old faces and the cycle is repeated.

Wishing you a wonderful Monday.

GG ~ I'm so far behind with emails and posts and all that, and now on top of everything else I've got a good case of "back-to-standard-time-everything's-messed-up-schedule-wise-itis", but I just had to stop and read and comment.

You're right - about Favre, about the way older workers get shoved out the door to save costs, etc. etc. I've been so oblivious to this year's NFL season - didn't even know the Green Bay - Viking game was going on yesterday. But hooray for the Vikings and Favre - you just know that had to be sweet ;-)

OK - now out the door. I expect you have the same forecast we do: perfect for a week. Highs of 74, lows of 56. Sunshine. Medium humidity.

Loved your comment on my post, btw. Didn't know that snippet of poetry - perfect. Be back to tend to my own bloggie later.

I don't do football - totally clueless - but this piece you wrote - I think to be one of your best!!! I loved it (you should send it to your local newspaper/editorials!!) Fabulous read and a great observation and comment on who we are socially and what a fine person Farve is!
