Heat Advisory Extended Heat To Remain Through Weekend
POSTED: Friday, July 10, 2009 UPDATED: 4:33 pm CDT July 10, 2009
HOUSTON -- Houston's triple-digit temperatures will be around through the weekend, along with an extended heat advisory, KPR Local 2 reported Friday.
"It's getting to be a serious situation," KPRC Local 2 chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley said. "I think this heat is going to extend right through the weekend and into next week."
Billingsley said in the 40 days of summer so far, 21 days have had temperatures between 95 and 99 degrees, and 11 days were 100 degrees or more.
"Factor in the humidity and (Friday) feels like 102 in Houston, 104 in Galveston and Wharton, 106 in Conroe and 104 in College Station," he said.
The city of Houston also activated its heat emergency plan.
The city of Houston Health Department said a heat emergency is issued when the heat index reaches 108 for two or more days in a row.
As part of the heat emergency plan, the city designated libraries and multi-purpose centers as cooling centers.
Residents are urged to take precautions and stay out of the heat.
