Times of the Year

By: EarlB , 1:17 AM GMT on January 12, 2014

These are pivotal
Times of the year for

This is the time
When mine aches to

When I think
Of those near but so far

And those,
Never to be near again,

And those now,
Sadly, drifting away:
Hearts breaking away, lost.

My goodness. That's no Valentine's heart poem, for sure. It's beautifully constructed, and so true to life, but so poignant.

Strange - that last image, of hearts breaking away, reminds me of glaciers and bergs. Beautiful, but cold.

On another note entirely, I hope the new year is treating you well. I spent the entirely of last weekend (save for a few hours in the great outdoors, hiking about) immersed in the history of the Santa Fe trail, Council Grove, its trees and such. Fascinating stuff. I got involved with some original sources - journals kept by merchants who were involved in the trade with Santa Fe and Chihuahua, particularly. Such insight into the life they lived then - actually, far more comfortable than we might imagine. Silk hose for the ladies of Santa Fe in the 1860s? Who knew?!
