Letters from Home (12) Fog, Geese and Luck

Sweetest Zoe,

After a week of cold weather, it has turned "tepid" here: neither cold nor
warm. With this moderation has come several days (and I mean several 24 hour
days) of fog. The fog has floated both 20 feet above the ground as well as nestled
right into the blades of grass, but, it has been persistently here.

Because of the fog and it's sound twisting qualities (it muffles far away noise
and focuses nearby sounds) my attention was directed toward my first "vee"s of
geese flying by. I was happy to see the twin formations flying South… with the odd
weather patterns this year, I have learned to wait before making assumptions about
what nature's intentions are! But, South they were headed, skimming just below the
densest part of the fog-cloud, they were close enough for me to hear that swishing
sound of feather against air that I enjoy so.

The geese were snow geese, white shadows against the white sky, if it weren't
for their abbreviated flight "honk" (more like "hnk", ha ha) alerting me, I might not
have seen them at all. Luck, fate, karma, I'm not sure, they flew directly overhead
just as I happened to be walking from the house to the garden. Call it what you like,
I'm just happy to know that NOW, Winter can start!

Thank you for the pretty card and letter you sent me. It is so nice to have you
celebrate another of my personal trips around the sun. With luck, like that in seeing
the geese, I hope to be around for a few more, and that's good, because I have a lot
more stories to share with you, my fellow traveler.

Love,

Uncle Roy
