Denver will have pleasant late-summer weather this week and through the weekend. Highs will be in the 80s, with lows in the 50s. Mostly sunny weather will prevail with only a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms on some days.

MONDAY A PERFECT DAY!
Monday featured sunny skies, a light breeze and refreshing temperatures more typical of mid September than mid August. At the airport, the high was 75 after a morning low of 52. The weather doesn't get much better than this!
SOME SUN BUT COOL SUNDAY
The rain ended Sunday morning and skies cleared later in the day. It was still cool with a high of 69 at the airport and 71 in downtown Denver. The afternoon was delightful...like a fall day. After the long heat wave that ended two weeks ago, this temperature feels great!

WEEKEND RAIN/SNOW IN MOUNTAINS...Saturday, August 16, 2008
The CDOT camera on I-70 at the Eisenhower Tunnel showed it snowed Saturday morning, and it looked like about 2" had fallen. By mid-afternoon, the snow had melted, but the higher elevations above 11,000 feet in our northern mountains have had their first snow of the season. On Sunday morning, once the clouds cleared out, it appeared that the high peaks along the Front Range had picked up a good amount of snow, perhaps up to 6" above 12,000 feet.
In Denver, it rained steadily during the morning along with some embedded thunderstorms. There was one bad lightning strike in our neighborhood just before noon. Later our power was out for about an hour. Then the sun actually came out for a while! Later in the afternoon we had some more showers. Rainfall Saturday at our house in Thornton was 1.38". Along with .74" Friday, this brought our storm total for this event up to 2.12". At Denver International Airport, Saturday's total was 1.12". This total was just shy of the August 16 precipitation record of 1.13" in 1931. Along with Friday's .88", the storm total at the airport reached an even 2.00".
Another record low maximum was set Saturday with 58 degrees. The old record low max for August 16 was 63 in 1890. Friday's high was only 59, which easily beat the old record low max of 68 in 1880. This is the first time in Denver weather history that two consecutive August days have failed to rise out of the 50s. The all-time coolest high in August is 55, set on August 29, 1946 and August 27, 2004.

August rainfall totals (through Monday the 18th):
Denver International Airport 4.03" (officially Denver's third wettest August on record).
At our house in Thornton 5.05"
