I HAVE ALWAYS ENJOYED THE TIME IN THE FAMILY COTTAGE, IN THE HILLS OF BATTLE GROUND, WASHINGTON. WAITING FOR A RARE SUNNY DAY FOR A FAMILY GET TOGETHER.

DURING SCHOOL NIGHTS AND ON WEEKENDS DURING MY YOUNGER DAYS, IN SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA, WE AS A FAMILY PLAYED BOARD GAMES ON RAINY NIGHTS. DURING THE AUTUMN, WINTER AND SPRING WHEN IT RAINS DURING THE NIGHT, THE TEMPERATURE WAS USUALLY ABOUT 37*F. I WAS HOPING THAT THE TEMPERATURE WOULD DROP LOWER SO WE WOULD HAVE SNOW. OUR LOCAL RADIO STATION THAT WE LISTEN TO ALWAYS TALK ABOUT THE ROAD CLOSURES AND CHAIN CONTROL IN AREAS NEARBY AND THE AMOUNT OF SNOW THAT WAS ACCUMULATING IN THOSE AREAS ABOUT EVERY 15 MINUTES. BY SUNRISE THE TEMPERATURE STAYED THE SAME, IT DIDN'T SNOW BUT, I HAVE ALWAYS ENJOYED SEEING HOW MUCH SNOW, COVERED THE NEARBY HILLS AND MOUNTAINS THE VERY NEXT DAY

LISTENING TO OUR LOCAL RADIO STATION "clock radio am" WHILE PLAYING BOARD GAMES DURING RAINY NIGHTS, THIS SONG ALONG WITH "HEAR MY RAINY DAY SONG" WAS ALSO PLAYED ONCE AN HOUR DURING THE NIGHT, AS THEY BOTH FIT IN WITH THE WEATHER

THE YEAR BEFORE MY SENIOR YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL, INCLUDING A FEW YEARS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL, FAMILY VACATION OUTINGS WERE PUT TO A HALT, THAT MEANS NO SNOW TRIPS. I DID NOT HAVE MY DRIVERS LICENSE DURING THOSE YEARS AND I WANTED TO BE ABLE TO SEE SOME SNOW AGAIN, SO IT WAS DURING EASTER IN APRIL, THERE WAS A SNOWFALL ON OUR LOCAL MOUNTAINS IN SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA. IT LASTED A FEW DAYS AND IT WAS GOING TO BE THE LAST SNOWFALL OF THE YEAR, SO VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING AROUND 6:30AM I DECIDED TO RIDE MY DAD'S RACING BIKE UP MOUNT HAMILTON ROAD TO GET TO THE SUMMIT WHERE MOST OF THE SNOW WAS. I ARRIVED AT THE SUMMIT AROUND 3:00PM AND BUILD A SNOWMAN. IT WAS ABOUT 5:00PM WHEN I FINISHED BUILDING THE SNOWMAN NEXT TO THE LICK OBSERVATORY OVER LOOKING SAN JOSE. BY THAT TIME I WAS GETTING TIRED AND I KNEW THAT I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO RIDE 18 MILES DOWN THE MOUNTAIN AND IT WAS GETTING COLD WITH THUNDERSTORMS ARRIVING, SO I CALLED A TAXI TO COME UP THE MOUNTAIN TO TAKE ME HOME. THE TAXI ARRIVED AN HOUR LATER AND THE RIDE HOME TOOK 45 MINUTES AND IN TIME FOR DINNER.

Dave, I saw on tv that a big percentage of the world's food production goes to waste because of improper storage and distribution. It was an amazing statistic. If I ever see the story "in print" online I will try and post the link to it here.

I wonder how long the Central Valley can keep pumping groundwater before it too is gone? When that happens, then it will be desert once again..

Yes they need to find a better way to store food so it will not go to waste like it has been. I agree that California will become a desert in the Central Valley if water is no longer available underground and if that area doesn't receive any more rainfall or a snowpack along the Sierras.

Wife and I drove from the Midwest to Eureka, Ca and was surprised how wide spread to the east from California the drought is .. also all through the northern states the grasslands were very parched with the only green was from irrigation from deep wells ..

I wonder how long the Central Valley can keep pumping groundwater before it too is gone? When that happens, then it will be desert once again. And a lot of food production will go along with it. Particularly the almonds! I use to enjoy seeing all the almond orchards along I-5 north of Sacramento before I would drive up into the mountains surrounding Clear Lake. Lake County has lots of pear orchards. The last time I saw photos of Clear Lake it had a bathtub ring. Didn't look very good. The years I lived there were very wet and the lake was full.

Hi Dave, maybe some relief in a couple of months from a more modest El Nino? SoCal appears to be getting flooding in some areas from monsoonal moisture. Saw that even the Bay Area got a little of the moisture also. The tropical storm remnants have been coming into Hawaii on a somewhat regular interval this summer.

Dave, what do you attribute the change in events regarding the rainfall due to? Is is it from El Nino returning, as Briar, mentioned? Or has the jet stream shifted into a new pattern which it is now getting stuck in. I hope it is at least the later for us as well. We are getting much more rain now and our rainy season is similar. Rain means free water for me and a nice looking garden also. And some of the trees that were dying are showing new growth from the lower trunks.

You've added quite a bit of content here since I lost stopped by. I enjoy reading your reminiscences as well as your weather observations, along with the visual and audio aids -- a lot of fun and interesting stuff.

I've heard rumblings about a possible El Niño forming up. If that turns out to be so and my memory serves correctly, it means wetter than normal for the southwest and drier than normal for the northwest later this year.

Thank you Brian,

Most of the counties in California will have a 10 to 30 percent cutback on their water usage from what ever they used during the previous summer. If each household used more water than allotted for, then the household will be paying an extra fee for going over their usage amount per month.

Hopefully, if everyone cuts back on their water usage as instructed, then the taps should not be running dry by September.

Looks like it is a milder day there today, Dave. 54F is more like a San Francisco winter day temperature. I haven't checked the stats but I would bet that it is a drier 54 than along the coast. That is what I liked about the high desert and inland coastal range; the cold was a much drier cold and easier for me to deal with.

Quoting 4. Skyepony:
Hey Dave. Good to see you. Hope Nevada is treating you better weather wise than CA..

Thank you Skyepony. I know that I will enjoy the four seasons of weather Nevada has to offer.

Clear Lake/Lake County was like that but not quite as extreme. Best air quality in California. Pears, grapes for wine, walnuts and cattle.

We use to go over towards Reno area sometimes on gambling junkets.

Quoting 1. clearlakemike:Hi Dave, good to see you back. What is Silver Springs, Nevada's claim to fame...other than silver? And being close to Lake Tahoe and the snow, I see.
Silver Springs and the nearby communities are an inexpensive retirement area where people can have many acres of desert land that can become farm land with any kind of crop.

The extreme heat during the summer, extreme cold in the winter, and various types of weather in between. It's great not to hear all the sounds of the city. The air is clear and pollution free.

The town of Stagecoach has an old west effect. Some museums, the closer you get to Carson City. A recent meteor crater along a hillside next to highway 95 between Silver Springs and Yerington.

Many windy days during the summer with the temperatures around 110*F. Winters, are extremely cold with snow. The low temperatures during the night usually from -20*F through 5*F. Some daytime high temperatures in the 50s.
Quoting 2. BriarCraft:Just checking out your alter ego. And, I admit, I am a bit curious. Your profile says you're a college student -- are you cutting class to play in the snow?
I am taking some online courses on the computer, so I can continue my education. The weather has been clear for the past couple days, some snow around. There is plenty of snow over by Carson City and up along highway 50 towards Lake Tahoe and Incline Village. I should be seeing some more snowfall later this month.
