For all of the attention that yesterday drew from around the country, yesterday's event should be considered a bust. The derecho never was.
The bow echo that developed in the late night and early morning hours of Wednesday and Thursday began to look like your classic derecho. The hype from the SPC, putting us under a PDS Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the first time I can ever remember, local and national media suggested this could be worst than last year's. Everything was in place.
When our initial Tornado Watch expired it was replaced with the PDS Watch I mentioned. This was to cover for the impending derecho. You can even see in the watch detail below the ominous bow:
The weather radio rang out at 12:53am as the first warning barely grazed Franklin County. Later, around 1:20am, the warning that actually covered Canal Winchester was issued. I watched on Wunderground's PWS map at wind speeds as the bow echo crossed the county and was not impressed. Maybe a 40mph gust at one location.
So I stood at my door as the storm finally blew in right around 2am. The result? Some heavy rain and a max wind gust at 2:04am of 35mph.
After all of that, if this wasn't a bust I don't know what is.
In the end the SPC stated that this would not even be classified as a derecho. The wind speeds stayed mainly under 50mph for most of the duration, and this storm was not going to be historic by any means.
We all got fool. I did for sure. I talked about it all day, how this thing would eventually form. And... it didn't. Instead we end up with even more rain (now at 3.15" for the month), and our first ever PDS Severe Thunderstorm Watch.
And the severe drought continues.
