FOSC for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in New Orleans approved a joint plan from BP and Transocean
10/12/2012 09:02 PM EDT

NEW ORLEANS — The Federal On-Scene Coordinator for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in New Orleans approved a joint plan from BP and Transocean Thursday.

The joint plan was required by Coast Guard Capt. Duke Walker to identify the source of a sheen located in the Gulf of Mexico that has been associated with Macondo 252 oil. The Notice of Federal Interest informed BP and Transocean that they may be responsible for costs related to identifying the source of the sheen and cleanup.

The proposed joint plan includes satellite observations and mobilizing remotely operated vehicles to examine the original Macondo well area including the wreckage, debris, and the riser on the sea floor.

The ROV is expected to be mobilized Sunday with direct Coast Guard oversight. Operations are anticipated to commence early next week with logistics and weather permitting.

The public is reminded to contact the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802 to report all pollution incidents or the Coast Guard 8th District Command Center at 504-589-6225 in the event of any maritime emergencies.

We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential.

Hi everyone!

Yes!!! So far I have to say surgery is a success! Still have some residual nerve pain, but doctor warned me of this.... Those nerves were compressed for 3 years so it will take time for them to settle down! Go for another Post op visit to local neurosurgeon in id Jan. he will order more films, X-rays,CT Scans - hopefully everything will be good! Will also send copies to the surgeon who actually did surgery for his review....
So far there has been very little neck pain, only if I over do it, so I'm still taking it slow & easy!!! Don't want to mess up the bionic neck! Haha

Thanks to you all!

Thank you!

Its been 7 weeks & so far I do believe the surgery is a success!! Still some nerve pain, but that is to be expected considering those nerves were compressed for three years; I figure they are celebrating their freedom!

Hope all is well with you!

Didn't realize that you had recent successful surgery 7 weeks ago! Hope you continue to recover nicely and that any lingering nerve pain will completely abate!

Wishing you all the best and with hopes that you can remain with us on WU when able during this holiday season and year ahead!!

Hey all,

Thanks for your thoughts & prayers. Doing well as can be expected after getting surgery - throat cut, & discs in neck replaced. Watching storm Sandy wishing safety to everyone. She is a monster! We are scheduled to cross the big pond on Oct. 31, flying into MIA, but know we may see serious delays. Flying 7 days after major surgery is scaring enough... Being stuck in an airport - YIKES!!!!!

Main worry - Sandy, pay attention & be safe.

spathy ~ The BP riser pipe was about a mile long and 21" in diameter. That's the piece that connects the drilling platform to the well. If it is the riser, they can calculate exactly how much oil could be in there. Of course, there's drilling mud, too, so it isn't just full of oil.

There's some information about the pipe beginning in the 8th paragraph of this McClatchy article.

Here's a decent synopsis from Bloomberg. The presence of the drilling muds & etc. suggests the riser as a culprit - still a problem, but fixable.

BP just sold their Texas City refinery down the road from me to Marathon. I haven't followed events related to that, but I'm sure they're stashing cash for a final payout. This might slow things down a tad.

I wondered why my posts about the oil spill over on Wordpress were getting new hits all of a sudden. I think I just figured it out.

UPDATE 1-Oil sheen near BP Gulf spill site from Macondo well -US

* BP says sheen likely emanating from bent riser pipe on sea floor

* Transocean says not responsible for oil originating below surface

* U.S. lawmaker calls for inspection by undersea robots

By Chris Baltimore

HOUSTON, Oct 11 (Reuters) - An oil sheen spotted on the Gulf of Mexico near the site of the sunken Deepwater Horizon rig matches samples from BP Plc's ill-fated Macondo well, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

BP reported a sheen on Sept. 16 in block 252 of the Mississippi Canyon, about 50 miles (80 km) off the Louisiana coast. Test samples indicate that "the sheen correlates to oil that originated from BP's Macondo Well", the Coast Guard said in a statement late on Wednesday.
