Guido, the new guy, is the one wearing the tux and mustache. Others are Sweet Pea and Sammy, two of the feral kittens who showed up on the deck last Thanksgiving with their Mom and Blackie.

Mommy and Blackie hang out on the deck sometimes. They are part of the ferals who live around the 'hood. Though Mommy's still friends with Blackie, she won't be having any more babies.
:)

Good night, wu, and Good morning to you.
I may show up if there's any weather going on --- or may not. Meanwhile...

Celebrate. Enjoy. Eat chips and drink wine. Make scrambled eggs for supper with toaster waffles for dessert. Keep joy in your life by remembering how great joy feels. You can call your joy to mind anyway, anywhere, any season. Try it. You'll like it. And don't forget the ice cream.

LPL. Was just over at your blog reading and feeling glad you are doing okay. Over the years, I saw a few subdural hematomas (bleeding under the dura mater, the tough cover of your brain). Theses are often not apparent at the time of injury, and can become serious several days later when enough bleeding and fluid accumulate to cause symptoms. I'm not sure how well an initial catscan might pick up on potential subdural bleeds. Neuro was not my thing.

Thanks for stopping in. Please try not to do whatever you were doing to get a concussion.

Concussion

Concussion Symptoms:

•Loss of consciousness after any trauma to the head
•Confusion
•Headache
•Nausea or vomiting
•Blurred vision
•Loss of short-term memory (you may not remember the actual injury and the events some time before or after the impact)
•Perseverating (repeating the same thing over and over, despite being told the answer each time, for example, "Was I in an accident?")

Oh yeah...I did all of that!

I'm feeling much better this evening...I'm OK!

Got a treat for anyone interested in the Feral Kittens' story. Now 8-month-old Sammy and Sweet Pea have a little friend, Guido, who showed up a couple weeks ago. He's big for his age but he's only 6-7 weeks old now.

Plan is for Guido and Sammy to go out and live in the country, in a fancy barn, in another week or two. So they are all three together for only a while. Got a photo of the three I'll post a little later.

Hi Thoughtsteader,
That's neat, the inscription. Noticed the limited editions - the only place I really looked on their site. Then I went off on their oil well art and stayed up till one a.m. night before last watching that old Oklahoma oil-themed film, Tulsa. (Film linked at 53.)

Yesterday, I found a link on net to read your new book in pdf, with illustrations, and I surely will read it and look at the pictures. Illustrations are my reason to get the one I'd already read, to be able to look again at the old photos printed in the book.

...

Hotter than a titches wit here. Not the heat, the humidity. LPL Yesterday seemed worse than today. Until...

Heat and air guy - really nice young (comparatively. lpl) man who came by to troubleshoot the central air unit fan - arrived driving his work truck, a shiny, red 2001 Dodge half ton he inherited from his father. What is most remarkable about his truck is his father put over 1,000,000 miles on it, and the truck is still going strong on the original engine and transmission. knock wood. Yes, that is One Million Miles.

So Mr Heat and Air discovered the central air fan had quit because of a spider nest on an electrical interface. Needed to take the top off the unit to get to it, but he tested the wires and had it fixed in 15 minutes including conversation about our Dodge trucks and other vehicles.

He's says he's not a Dodge guy. He described other vehicles he owns - three Chevys: a 4x4 truck (500 hp), a 70s vintage Camaro souped up to run more than 500 horses and another souped up Chevy car which model escapes my memory at the present moment - and a VW Thing.

I gasped and said, "Oh! A Thing? Neat."

He said, "Most people don't know what a Thing is."

Ha. Well, I remember driving a 36 hp VW back in the day. Uphill. 500 is a lot of horsepower. Though I never was quite sure how many horsepower a large draft horse holds, 500 hp is lots of horses if your were trying to drive them by hand. Horses would probably get more MPB though - miles per bale or bucket (of grain).

Morning, Barefoot ~ As a matter of fact, my copy of the Coulter book arrived yesterday. In addition to all the other neat things about the book, inside the jacket it says "This copy of "The Complete Story of the Galveston Horror" was prepared by the publisher expressly for Linda Leinen." How cool is that? This is one of the books that's a limited run - one copy for each county in Texas. When they're gone, they're gone. I had wanted the one about the camels in Texas, too, but I couldn't afford all three, so I chose as I did.

I've just skimmed it, but have turned up some interesting tidbits, including a mention of the weather prophet, Andrew Jackson DeVoe, who predicted the storm in January, in a publication called "The Ladies' Birthday Almanac." Now, there's a road worth traveling!

I better get my central air fan fixed. ;(

Good night!

I just love this movie. Totally Hollywood, so maybe a little over-dramatized, but the history presented I don't think anyone can argue with. In today's world, that history has significance more than ever. The film was released in 1949 and depicts an Oklahoma oil boom in the 1920's, so we're going back a good 90 years...

Starring Susan Hayward and Robert Preston. The full movie, captioned. ;)

Had a bunch of twice a year paper work to do today. Hate it. Well it's not the paperwork, it's the prep work for the paper work.

Saw a link about reprinted Texas books posted by Thoughtsteader over at beell's. When I looked under "limited editions," one book I saw kicked my butt into gear and made me order a similar book I've meant to get for a while. Noticed her Copano Bay Press link has a title from a journalist that includes the word "horror" related to the The Great Galveston Storm. CBP's, like the one I ordered, was originally published in 1900. Read the book I ordered in 2007, a copy on inter-library loan from Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD. (Link added)

Thank you, TS.

Add: Ps. Especially love the old oilfield prints that store sells. Gonna try to make some oil (lpl) paintings of old oil derricks and fields.

Hi Skye,
I'm a great fan of cloth diapers. That is interesting - the diaper free approach. Possibly mommy's getting trained more than baby is, but after baby reaches 4-5 months of age, maybe some merit. Before that... nah. It is interesting, though. I will read some more to see how this is done in other countries. For some reason, diaper free strikes me as though it might have some comedic value - in a good way - if only to point out human foibles.

Wow. Just fascinating that you can drive a team of eight! What a talent. I can't help wondering how you learned this skill of driving and teaching horses to pull and work in a team. I looked at youtubes and saw a mini team of eight who look like they know their job pretty well.

Horses are such good souls. They love humans in a way most people don't realize unless they've spent time around horses. A lot of farms right here where I live breed and train quarter horses for all competitive disciplines. Some of the horses also work on real cattle ranches. :)

Since May, I have a new yearling grandhorse named Leroy. His Louisiana-bred grandsire was a national cutting horse champion. So was his daddy. His dam, Cajun Lena Oak, is descended from the famous cutting horse mare, Poco Lena. (Page down to read about her.) My favorite horse biography, Poco Lena. Sad story, but one with many happy endings from her two colts and their descendants. Maybe you know of her.

Leroy was weaned at 3-4 months of age and spent the next several months running and playing in a pasture with two other colts his age, so he'd never had a human hand on him much except to be run into a chute to get his shots. He'd never had a halter on. Never been groomed. But he has learned fast and he's such a love. Leroy lives in a pasture with a retired horse so he's learned manners from the elder horse also.

Quoting 49. Barefootontherocks:

Hi Skye,
Yes. A lot of the quality, functional things around today are old, or extremely expensive. Times change, styles change. I think of what used to be sci fi - like the instant food and the "communicators" in Star Trek - and I realize human "civilization" is headed already there. More garbage? I hope not. I always thought disposable diapers were the worst thing popularized in recent times. The changes are rapid and just beginning. Some days I long to be in a world before cell phones and internet. Some days I think I can't live without them. LPL

Thanks for stopping in. Noticed your new avatar. That's a neat skill to have - driving a horse-drawn vehicle!

It's not so much about not living with the technology, just the trash..something got lost between star trek/Jetsons & now.

It's your diaper point. Yeah we could do better than disposable diapers, like cloth, compost able ones or more of the diaperless approach. Not only did disposables waste alot they encouraged people to potty train late, make kids live in pull ups & such. Like tissues instead of hankies.. it's disposable, trash creating..

Driving is fun. I've drove up to eight in hand. Teaching horses to drive is the real skill. Buster is doing so good with it. He's been a good leadline pony & pasture companion but something like being a child-safe carriage pony should keep him in good homes if he ever leaves this one. In the past I've helped people buy a team or something to pull guests around at golf resorts & such, more than anything. Get the grooms acquainted with the tack, the horses with their job & teach everyone to drive. Lately with the economy & drought..the horse industry has been hit like I've never seen. Horses for meat are cheaper than ever in my life. People can't afford to keep them & hay gets scarce. Driving mini's seem like a new mini fad...& older people that can't give up horses can afford to keep them & it can be easier than riding. Haven't been training much raising kids but I do have a mini mare client learning to drive now. I should bring a pic of her sometime. She's a little handful & alot of fun, pretty too.

Good morning, clearlakemike.
Thanks for stopping in. Yeah, Wali sure did poof. Not often you see a cone pointing right at Hawaii.

When I lived in Hawaii (Loved it!) I knew people who'd been affected by both Iniki and Iwa. Had to look up Iwa's name. lol Could remember timing was late fall of '82 but not the name. In the process of finding Iwa, I was surprised to see the number of TCs that have affected Hawaii, small target that it is.

Hope it's good rain when/if Wali's remnants reach the Big Island.

OmG(osh?) aqua.
Yes, frame it. Beautiful, the blend of colors in your (also my) favorite hanky of the four.

You could almost take the other three pretty much as you have them laid out and frame them in a long rectangular frame. Their colors look great together.

Thanks for the picture of the little animals. So cute. :) I think I have a grandfather of vintage Mexican onyx burros. He's 6" high and helps me watch weather.

Thank you for bringing the photos here. You're welcome to post pics here anytime.

Wali the Wimp went poof, Barefoot, lol. No match for the trade winds and the massive volcanoes on the Big Island. The relatively cooler waters at our latitude cooled his jets also. But it may turn out to be a big rain event before all the remnant moisture passes by, especially for the windward sides of the islands.

Clean look. Easy to read local weather page that includes wunderground's weather stations...Also under The Weather Company Weather Channel, NBC, wu, etc. umbrella - (Home page) Intellicast. Is this regurgitated NWS forecast? I don't know.

Some features (interactive map and dropdown links) there are not working for me on my old Mac. May be the old browser or may be site construction. Jury still out on the local interactive radar as compared to wu's. I can't access it.

Hi Tf,
The coolth this morning felt wonderful. The dewpt being just over 50 helps also - compared to the 72 dewpt temp of yesterday.

Possibly a bunch of rain on its way for tomorrow and Thursday.

Thanks for stopping in.

The first three are very neat - artsy. After that, the slideshow went caput for me. Probably because my browser has some incompatibility issues. Thanks again for posting the slide show!

Ha. LPL... And I get by "With a Little Help from My Friends".
Performed by Usher, Shakira, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine, a great rendition from The Voice.
Probably sound even better recorded without a live audience.

From the 3 pm cdt SPC Day 1 Convective Outlook
...KS/OK/TX...
SIMILAR TO THE LAST FEW DAYS...ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED
TO DEVELOP THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING ALONG RESIDUAL BOUNDARIES
ACROSS THIS REGION. POCKETS OF STRONG HEATING AND AMPLE LOW LEVEL
MOISTURE...ALONG WITH SUFFICIENT DEEP SHEAR...WILL POSE A RISK OF A
FEW MULTICELL STORMS CAPABLE OF GUSTY OUTFLOW WINDS.

Temp 87, dwpt temp 72, right here in the middle - at the 3000j/kg circle. Getting dark and I heard thunder. A little sumthing just popped to the NW of Purcell. Let's see if it knows what to do with its little self.

LPL. But we don't rate a watch.
;)

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1374
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0317 PM CDT MON JUL 14 2014

AREAS AFFECTED...TX AND OK PANHANDLES...WRN AND SRN OK...NW TX

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 142017Z - 142145Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...20 PERCENT

SUMMARY...AN ISOLATED SEVERE THREAT SHOULD PERSIST THROUGH THE LATE
AFTERNOON FROM THE OK AND TX PANHANDLES EWD ACROSS MUCH OF WRN AND
CNTRL OK. WIND DAMAGE AND HAIL WILL BE POSSIBLE AS CELL COVERAGE
INCREASES.
DUE TO THE MARGINAL NATURE OF THE THREATS...WW ISSUANCE
APPEARS UNLIKELY ACROSS THE REGION.

DISCUSSION...THE LATEST SFC ANALYSIS SHOWS A COLD FRONT MOVING SWD
THROUGH SRN KS WITH SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ONGOING ALONG THE
BOUNDARY. SOUTH OF THE FRONT FROM THE OK AND TX PANHANDLES EWD INTO
CNTRL OK...SFC DEWPOINTS ARE IN THE UPPER 60S AND LOWER 70S F AND
MLCAPE IS ESTIMATED BY THE RAP TO BE IN THE 1500 TO 3000 J/KG RANGE.

ALTHOUGH DEEP-LAYER SHEAR IS RELATIVELY WEAK ACROSS MUCH OF THE MCD
AREA...LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES HAVE BECOME QUITE STEEP. IN
ADDITION...SFC WINDS ARE GENERALLY LIGHT WITH A NORTHERLY COMPONENT.
THESE FACTORS COMBINED WITH UNIDIRECTIONAL WIND PROFILES ABOVE ABOUT
2 KM AGL EVIDENT ON THE FREDERICK WSR-88D VWP SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT
FOR ISOLATED WIND DAMAGE WITH MULTICELLS THAT INITIATE THIS
AFTERNOON. HAIL COULD ALSO OCCUR ESPECIALLY WITH STORMS LOCATED NEAR
LOCALLY MAXIMIZED INSTABILITY.

Quoting Randrewl:
Well you won't see many parking meters in most big cities anymore...because the punks just steal them!

I lived in LA in 85 and you had set time limits for street parking everywhere. they mark your tire and if you're there too long you get a ticket.
Hi-rise parking was the only way to go even back then!
Valet in L.A. costs but is worth it. ;)

Haha. Tire marks. Even the little town I left in WA had a meter maid and the folks who worked in town set alarm clocks to remind themselves it was time to move their vehicles to a different spot.

Great photos, Randrewl.
Thank you. And, speaking of Los Angeles, I paid a $60 parking ticket a few years ago after I visited a friend and forgot the parking meter needed to eat every two hours. LPL Whatever burg that is when you drive from West Hollywood over Laurel Canyon Road and down into the Valley is/was loaded with meters. Uh... Sherman Oaks. Yeah, Sherman Oaks had parking meters in 2009. lpl

Quoting Barefootontherocks:
Aw, Rand.
Moonday is Be Kind to Punks Day. :)
I hear what you're saying, and I'd guess that will be or has been addressed. Seems a lot built in, maybe even an alarm, and a lot of positive points - one being people can actually see solar panels at work. And a young female entrepreneur, Sandra Richter, has been receiving requests for info from business campuses and cities all over the globe.

Here she is speaking with Boston's Mayor Walsh (youtube)

I'm a realistic person BF...and I appreciate your optimism...but anything like this won't make it.
How many parking meters do you still see today?
