Tornado Warnings Canceled; Severe Storms Continue
Severe Storms Moving Through Maryland

POSTED: 12:14 pm EDT September 27, 2010
UPDATED: 1:16 pm EDT September 27, 2010

Some fast-moving storms interrupted lunch time for many in central Maryland as the National Weather Service issued tornado warnings where severe storm cells had the most potential for danger.

The weather service first issued a tornado warning for Howard County, where a large storm cell approached Columbia. That warning was allowed to expire at 12:45 p.m.

As the storm raced northward, the weather service issued a tornado warning for communities along the Carroll-Baltimore County line. The warning was canceled a half hour early shortly after 1 p.m.

Throughout the early afternoon, Doppler radar had indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado near Columbia and Hampstead. The storm was moving north at 30 mph.

WBAL-TV 11 Insta-Weather meteorologist Tony Pann said the storm system contained several severe cells that were showing rotation on Doppler. Pann said the storm is moving very quickly northward toward Hampstead, Manchester, Finksburg, Patapsco and Carrollton..

Pann said the storms were developing along a warm front, developing spin in the atmosphere.

SkyTeam 11 HD Capt. Roy Taylor said the cloud ceiling was very low at the time the warning was issued. From his vantage point, Taylor said there were low-lying clouds over central Maryland, but it was sunny and clear to the east around Thurgood Marshall Baltimore-Washington International Airport and up the Chesapeake Bay.

Maryland State Police Lt. Andrew Winner of the Westminster Barrack said troopers deployed in the area were monitoring conditions as a precaution.

If you're in a safe area and are able to take a picture of the storm, you can share your storm photos and videos in our u local section. Your photos and video could appear on WBAL-TV 11 News coverage of the storm.

Tornado Safety

If you are in or near the path of severe storms, take cover immediately. If no underground shelter is available, move to an interior room on the lowest floor. Mobile homes and vehicles should be abandoned for more substantial shelter. Avoid windows.

In addition to the tornado threat, large hail and damaging winds can be expected with severe storms. Take shelter immediately.

If a tornado does come by, crouch down and cover your head. If you're in an office building, stairwells are a good place for shelter.

Weather experts said that most tornadoes begin when warm, humid air is pushed up by cooler air and develops into a funnel. Sometimes, however, a funnel doesn't happen -- in that case, you can tell if you see debris and whirling dust around a cloud base.

Experts said a tornado sounds like a loud, continuous rumble that doesn't end quickly like normal thunder.

For your Friday morning chuckle -- no comment necessary!

Emergency Bra: Unsnap, separate cups, inhale...
by Elizabeth Armstrong Moore
C-Net News - Health Net

Well, creator Dr. Elena Bodnar--whose inspiration comes in part from having witnessed as a young physician the devastating effects of the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster in 1986--is introducing the now commercially available Emergency Bra at the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass., on September 28. She hopes we can all "get a feel of [sic] the product," as she has grown fond of saying.

The bra is, of course, meant to be taken off, something most adults presumably have experience with. Once removed, it separates into two masks which, when placed over the nose and mouth, filter out particles that were found to be as harmful as radiation in Chernobyl.

There is also some noise of a "counterpart device for men" in the works, though the precise shape it will take has yet to be revealed. The emergency bra may work well for women, but attaining the second of the two resulting masks does require men who are not cross-dressing to beg and plead in the event of a disaster.

As Bodnar explained in her alluring Ukrainian accent when accepting the award:

Ladies and gentlemen, isn't that wonderful that women have two breasts, not just one? We can save not only our own life, but also the life of a man of our choice next to us.

Now, a year later, what was once a bizarre and intriguing idea has turned into an actual bra that can be purchased online for $29.99. Ladies, it's a sexy red and comes in a wide range of sizes, from 32B to 40C. Gentlemen, Bodnar assures us that in the event of an emergency, the size of the cup does not matter.

Hello everybody and thanks for the great autumn wishes!

But ya'll jinxed me it's blankety-blank in the 90's.
Yes, it's all WU's fault, not GW, LOL!!!
Which just wrecks my plans to "stage" my vendoring display in my carport.
Melted scent waxes won't cut it, so everything's ajumble in my family room.
Which must get CLEARED OUT in case of strange and not-so-strange visitors for the Stewart/Colbert Rallies.

WHICH are getting bigger and bigger every day.
Unfortunately, I should not must not will not post all the morning local video news bits about the rallies (must concentrate, must focus, must attend to the task at hand), but even the morning news anchors seem to be happy and looking forward to them.

I'm closing up for comments for a couple-few days because I just feel terribly guilty when I don't chew the fat back atya.
I'll check in on WU-mail and my e-mail though, in case anything important comes up.

Seems I missed a melee on the main blog a week or two ago -- I guess ignorance is bliss, but I can't help but wondering WTH happened (because I'm curious and nosy and afraid I'll step on someone's toes -- as we all know, there are SO many sensitive -- cough splutter -- souls in this here WUnderland). Summary, anyone? Anyone? Yoo Hoo!!

See you soon and Guard the Fort!

Update
: Got the skinny on the recent blog melee. Oy. Too bad. The more things change...

& thanks for the blog headers saying Happy Birthday ColoradoKat -- adding my best wishes, too.
Back to work. CYL.

Yup, been AWOL but couldn't stay away.Earthquake didn't do it, thunderstorms, wind and power outages couldn't do it, humidity and record heat certainly wouldn't do it...but Mr. Earl has done it. I just have to check in.And yes, the avatar is really me, though I've had that mess of a mane lopped off since May (couldn't fight the frizz this hell of a summer).Thinking no one would recognize me without the moniker and fur-kids!Apologies to all I didn't get back to last...
