College Choice

Hi everyone. On Monday, April 21, 2014, mother and I paid the enrollment deposit fee for Millersville University, a school situated just south of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. So, that will be my new home for the next four years. Here are my reasons for choosing the school, note that not all reasons are specific to MU, other schools shared some of the reasons, but not all of them.

1. Top-notch meteorology program (multiple sources have told me MU has an excellent program).
2. Far away from home (freedom!).
3. Grandparents live an hour away in Camp Hill, PA.
4. Snow. Lots of snow. Way more snow that what I get in Tennessee.
5. Relatively small school (when compared against OU or PSU).
6. Good cost and financial aid ($5K/year merit scholarship).
[Might be able to graduate debt-free or near to debt-free.]
7. General good feeling when visited (gut feeling).

I graduate from (ok, been waiting a while to do this) Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Magnet School for Health Sciences and Engineering at Historic Pearl High School on May 24, 2014.

Screw snow. Hurricanes all the way.

Happy for you, btw.

You don't understand snow.

Congrats! Although I'm disappointed you didn't come to Florida. :)

Best wishes to you, I'm sure you will do fantastic.

I didn't even bother applying to any of the schools in Florida. Didn't want to go down there, really. The state has beautiful weather (both sun and storms), but snow was a major concern.

Congratulations, Astrometeor! And welcome to central Pennsylvania, haha. Lancaster, PA is a wonderful community and Millersville has an excellent meteorology program with relatively newly renovated facilities. Enjoy!

Congratulations, Astro!

Some distance from parents but with other family not too far away sounds like a good balance.

Best wishes to you.

Congrats, Astro. From what I've heard about that school, you've made a great choice. Hey, maybe you could contact "Blizz" and he can give you some advice on your studies. I know he's going to Cornell, but he's taking a similar program I believe.

Congrats Astro! Millersville is a great school! Hopefully next winter is another good year; we are disappointed often here. When I was in State College I met a lot of interns from Millersville that loved their time there. You'll do great! I decided to enroll in the meteorology program at Rutgers; kept it simple and in-state. I wanted to go far initially, my reach school was the University of Wisconsin. However, I thought that there was no need to go so far out of the way for the same education that I could get here in NJ for a cheaper price tag. But your high school is probably way more credible than mine, to each his own. Look forward to hearing about it!

Thanks Trent! There's not a single-school in the state of Tennessee that has a meteorology program, so I have to go out-of-state. However, Western Kentucky did offer me in-state tuition (thanks to an agreement between the two states), but I didn't want to go there.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

@Ped, lol. The aid was a reason I threw Penn State out, they didn't offer me anything in their statement. OU did, MU did, UNC-A is already pretty cheap (hopefully Bluestorm5 won't mind that too much), and WKU gave me in-state tuition if I had attended there.

Don't pretend like you're happy about that.

Have fun at Millersville University. :)

It varies sometimes, Cody. I will miss my parents, but I will not miss some things...(like Dad telling me to be quiet when I start talking about weather because people are 'studying'. I don't think winning at Solitaire for the 10,000th time counts as 'studying'.)

And, thanks.

"Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Magnet School for Health Sciences and Engineering at Historic Pearl High School"? What a mouthful! Does it have a 'short form'?

Sounds like you have put some serious thought into where and why. Good choice - IMHO, smaller is better. I'm not familiar with the school, but if you think it's right for you, it likely is. Congratulations!

Most of us call it MLK, some will say MLK Magnet HS. For some reason the wiki page leaves off the "historic" part, not sure why.

I had never heard of the school until someone here on WU one day mentioned it while there was a debate about weather schools. I visited them, asked around about the reputation, and decided I liked it a lot.

I wonder how you will react when you witness your first major snowstorm there (assuming you haven't been in one already)?

Looks like Millersville should be a great fit for you!

Had a 6-8" blizzard when I was a little kid. Last good snowstorm. Also last (and only) time I've ever built a fort of snow.
