I realized that I can link to traffic cams (Houston TransStar) and use them as weather cams, as they keep updating. Here is what we are getting in Houston right now, if you want a visual.
I don't know what the laws are on linking like this to sites... (Anyone, feel free to educate me.)
Arbie ~ Well, shoot. I just discovered the final four is going to be in Houston. Who knew? Not me, obviously.
It's the perfect opportunity to meld your traffic cams with Joe's basketball blog! Pick out the cams around downtown and the ones from Reliant stadium and surrounds. I don't care a flip about basketball, but even I might take a look at that!

Hi Arbie, now I know you are the Joe blogger Arbie by your Avatar. Good idea about the traffic cams. Have a nice Thursday. Looks like the whole US is gonna be warm by tomorrow.

ROFL ~ look at that ferry line! Ah, spring break. Let's go down to Galveston and waste gas sitting in a line to head over to Bolivar ;-)
Actually, it's a good thing to do with kids. And I've got a friend - older than me by just a bit - who's never been on the Bolivar ferry, just like I'd never been to the Texas City Dike. We've got it on the to-do list. But not during spring break....

Hi Terry and all. I have to laugh at myself--forget to visit my own blog. Don't ever forget to visit JoeAK's blog LOL.
Shore, I have never been to the Texas City Dike either. I have lived here since 1981. It is on my list too. I am very thankful it held up to Ike and think it deserves a visit.
sms869--to get to the camaras on the TransStar map, you do this... When you have the real-time traffic map pulled up (the screen you go to if you click on the link I put in my blog entry), there is a legend in the upper-right corner of the map. The camaras are not shown by default; you have to click the checkbox beside "camaras". Lots of little camaras will pop up all over, obstructing your view of the roads. When you slide your mouse over a camara, you will see a thumbnail. If you double-click, you will get a bigger picture. WARNING: When double-clicking around, if you don't close the little windows--they don't go away by themselves--you'll have a kazillion little windows to close. Learned that the hard way.

Just browsing through with my pb&j and saw you pop to the top. Actually, the Texas City Dike didn't hold up to Ike at all. It just got flattened - bait shops, etc. all gone of course, and even the dike got torn apart. They rebuilt the whole thing - pretty amazing!
I just heard the entertainment lineup for Discovery Green during the Final 4. Lots of great performers - I guess. I hadn't heard of any of them ;)

Well, by "hold up", I meant it kept the water back. I heard it suffered damage and was being repaired. I didn't know it was so bad that they decided to rebuild it. Wow. Gotta read the local news a little more closely, I guess.
Nice to hear from ya!

I found a whole set of pics of the dike on Flickr that I haven't seen before. You can start here and then click through the set one way or the other. There are a couple that aren't too pleasant, including one of a poor steer that ended up there. Still, worth seeing the reminders.

Oh, I know!!! I was thinking the exact same thing.
I just happened to come upon some "before" pictures of the Texas City Dike (on flckr), in case you or any lurkers are interested. It was a nice place! Now, I am wondering how it doing now. I imagine since they are still trying to get it fixed, it is still kind of in turmoil. Here are the Texas City Dike before Ike pictures.

Thanks, shore. Nice article. You have me convinced LOL. I think I will make that my next trip to the coast. It sounds like a good replacement to the West Beach since I don't like what they have done with it since the city annexed close to the whole island. (Although I guess Ike messed up their plans a little.)

Great idea!

I like your idea of doing this for the BB crowds and traffic. Might be kind of fun.
Guess I'd better get the dates down.
I was thinking this would be neat during a hurricane too. Be interesting to see how long they lasted.
We just got the a couple of loblollies that died last winter out of the yard--so bring on the hurricanes--I'm ready! :)
thanks
