Me and the Swift Fox

Happy New Year everyone! Its 2012 and I'm proud to say the Swift Fox (Vulpes velox) that likes to walk my fence is still alive and doing well.

I'm breaking one of my own codes which is unusual for me. I'm feeding the little bugger. I can't help it. I only leave small amounts of meat and bones during the day time when I know she's most active. Its not an everyday thing. Just time to time when I know she's around.

In no way do I try to approach her or make her human friendly. After the really negative response about seeing her from some of my neighbors, I don't want her to become accustomed to people. I leave food on the fence where she likes to walk and walk away.

But more than once I've seen her on our patio table intensely watching me as I go about my daily routine. Sometimes at night but mostly about 11AM when I'm home. But I fear for her. I've got some really stupid neighbors. Some think its funny to watch their dogs chase after the wildlife. And other's think that they (mammalian wild life) is a threat.

Part of me wants to call Texas Parks and Wildlife so they can capture her and relocate her to a save place. But the bigger part of me just prays for her safety and that she will continue to go unnoticed.

I call her "Kitsune". Japanese for fox. I pray she lives a long, long time.

Thank you for setting up this blog. Looking forward to see how the little one makes out. Harsh times have brought many of these little ones closer to habitation and unfortunately man, in his ever presence on what was the vulpine's natural territory, think they have the total right to protect what is theirs. Shame on them for we all can live in peace.

I feed feral kitties that live in my area and more than not, wildlife join in. It is what sustains them over the frozen months when food is hard to find. Right now I have a very fat 'possum' that joins in as well as, squirrels, blue jays and starlings who seem to think kitty food is ok. I guess they won't turn away from free food...LOL In the Spring it will be fun to see the little raccoons join in as well.

Will be dropping by to see how things are with you and your little fox. Hope all goes well for the both of you.
