12/29 venturing out into the winter wilds...

We didn't fish... we fed. The fish, that is. :) I'm hoping for some food-karma - we feed them now, they feed us later. Does it work like that? The boys bundled up like there's no tomorrow, and we took the chill off with a fire on the lake. And it snowed the whole time. That was the best!

*Snow Advisory *
Statement as of 7:53 AM AST on December 24, 2007
... Snow Advisory now in effect until 9 PM AST this evening...
The Snow Advisory is now in effect until 9 PM AST this evening.
A strong area of low pressure just south and east of Kodiak
Island will send snow north into the Kenai Peninsula by late this morning. The heaviest snow in the western Kenai will be around Kachemak Bay... with 4 to 10 inches of accumulation expected late this morning through this evening. The highest amounts will be around Seldovia and on the Homer Bluff. Northeast winds of 15 to 30 mph are expected to accompany the snow... possibly leading to areas of blowing snow.
*Flood Watch / Flood Statement*
Statement as of 4:00 PM AST on December 23, 2007
The National Weather Service in Anchorage has extended the
small stream flood advisory for ice jam flooding in...
western Kenai Peninsula area of Alaska...
this includes the city of Sterling...
until 400 PM akst Monday
Recent cold temperatures have resulted in the onset of some frazil ice formation in The Big Eddy area of the Kenai River. River levels have risen and minor flooding has occurred. The slightly warmer temperatures today through the weekend should reduce the risk of the frazil ice forming serious ice jams and flooding. Residents along the river in The Big Eddy area should continue to monitor continues and be prepared to respond if ice jams do form.

12/23 - will it be a White Christmas?
Here it is, the Sunday before Christmas... can anyone tell me where 2007 went??? *looks under rocks, under sofa-cushions, behind the fridge...* LOL! Why is it that the older you get, the quicker the years seem to go by? Right now we have our sons' heights as measuring sticks, though by the size of their feet, it should be 2020 already!! Life in the boonies is supposed to be slower, not faster, but it seems to go by at warp speed. Anywho... we've had a pretty good year this year. Made some new friends with the addition of my weather station/blog, and I've truly enjoyed sharing photos and experiences with all of you. I hope to improve in my blogging as the years speed by! Lots of funs stuff, as well as challenges are expected in 2008, and hopefully it will just make us stronger, and not kill us! LOL! My new life-experience was having a bear come after our turkeys... I grew up in San Diego, where the biggest thing I had to worry about was dogs or coyotes!! You will be relieved to know that there is a shotgun kept by the front door at all times, and yes, I know how to use it. (Bear is yummy!) LOL!
I just wanted to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas, and as much joy and happiness as y'all can handle in the coming year! Happy Holidays!!

As if we didn't have enough troubles... >rolling eyes, here< it just keeps getting better. We DID get some flurries today, but nothing to write home about.

12/20 - FINALLY!!!!
Big storm warning for the Kenai Peninsula... Homer/Kachemak Bay will get hit with the biggest smack, but I'm looking forward to at least a little bit of the white stuff! :D We've gone from -18F to 0 in the last 3.5 hours, and still going up really fast...
"A trough of low pressure will move north from Kodiak Thursday and then remain nearly stationary over the western Kenai Peninsula to western Susitna Valley area. Onshore flow will bring abundant moisture to coastal and mountainous areas... and residual cold temperatures will potentially lead to several inches of snow around Kachemak Bay and along the Alaska Range of the Susitna Valley.
... Heavy Snow Warning in effect from 4 PM this afternoon to 12 PM AST Friday for along Kachemak Bay...
The National Weather Service in Anchorage has issued a Heavy Snow Warning... which is in effect from 4 PM this afternoon to 12 PM AST Friday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.
A nearly stationary trough of low pressure along Cook Inlet and cold temperatures will bring heavy snow for locations along Kachemak Bay. Storm total accumulations of 8 to 14 inches can be expected along Kachemak Bay from this afternoon through Friday morning. Greatest amounts are expected near Seldovia and the Homer Bluff."

12/19 - and still dropping...
-15.2°F (-28°C) this morning and still dropping... still no snow to be seen. :( I'm kind of glad I put a couple of pounds back on for insulation!!! ;)
Spent a good portion of the morning bringing the chicken coop back into range for them... they were getting a little stressed with the cold.

12/15 - sounds of cracking ice...
12/14 - and going numb...
Temperature range was 2.5-12.7°F today - and since the temps are droping again, I'd say that's it for our high.
Gorgeous morning - woke up at 6am, and realized that the Geminid meteor shower was peaking... and we had (for once) front row seats from our bedroom window upstairs. Usually when there's something like this going on, it's cloudy. Not this time! Woo hoo!!! it was great! Even the boys got up early to check it out.

12/10 Monday
We finally got a little snow today... about an inch. Then it warmed up and started melting away. Glad I didn't start shoveling! :) More on it's way, hopefully... keeping an eye on Levi's blog for updates. ;)
12/9
Got a dusting yesterday... then the winds came in and it warmed up to 37°F again and melted. Back to just below freezing and clear this morning. *tapping foot* and waiting none-so-patiently for the snow...
All I want for Christmas is a great big dump... of snow!!!
:D
12/5
Grrr.... it's clear again and 7°F. Only got about an 1/8" of snow yesterday, despite it's best efforts. *sigh*
Had to move the chicks into the garage yesterday. They kept popping out of the cage, much to momma's dismay, and I had visions of chick-sicles worrying me. Had to do it. They're quite content now being away from all the other hens and ruckus. :D
12/4
Finally... it's starting to snow!!!!!!!!!!
Please, sirrah, may we have more? :D
12/2
Wow... talk about cold. This is scary, because there's no snow on the ground. Low near 0 this morning, and a high of only 18-19F... I'm guessing that pipes are going to start freezing any day now. No snow in the forecast until Tuesday, and even then it's only a chance. Chickies are doing fine, though... they have heat 24/7. :)
