Just wanted to share what I call a "God-moment"...
The little town under the fog is Hope, Alaska.

The last chick did not make it. The egg was too small to allow for the extra day or two of development it needed before hatching. Momma hen had all but abandoned it, and it got too cold, slowing the development. But two happy and healthy chicks are bouncing on momma right now, so I'm happy, despite losing the last one. Now I can see why people use incubators...

37F and windy this morning... no snow left on the ground.

Well, last night was fun... the power went out between 7:30pm and 2am. At least it was AFTER all the baking was done!!! And lucky for us it was warm yesterday... 40F!!!
We hooked up the TV to the generator and had family movie night with candles. :D

I went out to check on the chickies this morning, and one egg is softly peeping and has a small hole in it...new arrival today!!!

Update: new addition is here!

11/22 - Happy Thanksgiving!

By: AKSnowLuvr, 10:44 PM GMT on November 22, 2007

It was raining hard this morning, but has since stopped and the wind really kicked up. Most of the snow is gone now.
We're waiting for our 30 pound turkey to cook, and watching momma hen on the "chick-o-vision". We set up a survellance camera in the hen house, and this morning I heard pipping noises coming from one of the eggs. By tomorrow we should have another addition to the family, with one more to follow the next day! *doing a happy dance*
Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday.

Now the advisories are hitting us for flooding from rain and snowmelt. We just can't win. Hopefully it will settle down soon. I hear the southeast US is going to get some rain tomorrow... you are welcome to all of ours. :)

T-2 and counting for new chicks...

grrrrr.... grumble grumble...

By: AKSnowLuvr, 12:15 AM GMT on November 20, 2007

low of 5.9°F, high of about 22°F. Was clear and cold this morning, but the fog/clouds rolled in and now it's all pretty much one color out there. Grey.

Attached is another pic of my new baby. Two more are due on Friday and Saturday. Keep your fingers crossed!!!

New addition to the family!!!

By: AKSnowLuvr, 4:14 AM GMT on November 18, 2007

We have a new baby!!! Hubby watched for a pipping chick all week while I was in San Diego (family is all ok after the fires, thank the powers that be!!!) and sure enough, there it was to greet us when we got home. There are two more eggs, due the day after Thanksgiving.
Momma is a white leghorn, papa is a Bantam Cochin, so we got a yellow chick with feathers on it's feet! :D Surrogate momma is a Mille Fleur Bantam.

Oh, yeah... ~ 25F and snowing all day. :)

By: AKSnowLuvr, 8:19 PM GMT on November 05, 2007

I may be counting my chickens before they're hatched, but I'm pretty excited about it. This little tyke, if all goes well, is due on 11/16. :)

Currently it's 30.2°F (50°F in the hen house!) and looking like it's thinking about snowing.
