Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 3:19 PM PDT on August 29, 2008

... Unseasonably cool weather and strong winds ahead of a cold
front expected this Holiday weekend...

This Labor Day weekend will be marked by drastically changing
weather. Very warm temperatures today... about 5 to 10 degrees
above normal... and light winds will give way to a very strong cold
front with temperatures falling to 10 to 15 degrees below normal
on Sunday.

Ahead of the cold front front... strong west to southwest winds
will develop on Saturday. These strong winds... in excess of 35
mph... will result in hazardous boating conditions on area
lakes... with waves of 3 to 5 feet on Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake.
See Lake wind advisories for additional information. Areas of
blowing sand and dust can also be expected through the desert
valleys.

The cold front will sweep south through northern California and
Nevada on Sunday. The strongest winds will shift south of
Interstate 80 on Sunday... with southwest to west winds in excess
of 40 mph continuing. These winds will produce hazardous boating
conditions from the Tahoe basin south through the Sierra and east
to Walker Lake.

Temperatures behind the front will fall dramatically... with highs
in many areas only reaching the lower to mid 70s on Sunday. Some
areas in the Sierra north of the Tahoe basin will struggle to
climb out of the 60s. Farther south temperatures will climb into
the 80s.

While the wind will subside Monday... temperatures will remain
well below normal. Highs will average in the mid 60s and 70s for
most areas with some Sierra locations only in the low 60s. This
cold front will also bring freezing temperatures Monday and
Tuesday mornings to the High Sierra valleys... including Truckee
and South Lake Tahoe.

Stay tuned for further updates to this weekends Holiday weather...
including any advisories... watches or warnings that may be
needed.

Fire Weather Warning
Statement as of 4:01 PM PDT on August 29, 2008

... Red flag warning now in effect from 11 am Saturday to 8 PM PDT
Sunday...

The red flag warning is now in effect from 11 am Saturday to 8 PM
PDT Sunday.

Southwest wind will increase to 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph by
midday Saturday over western Nevada and the Lake Tahoe basin. Very
low minimum humidity of 5 to 10 percent are likely in western
Nevada by Saturday afternoon... with 10 to 15 percent in the Lake
Tahoe basin.

Humidities are expected to remain mostly poor Saturday night with
gusty winds continuing... especially off the valley floors. This
will likely create hazardous fire fighting conditions overnight
for midslopes and ridges. Winds will increase for the valleys
once again by late Sunday morning... with gusts to 35 mph expected
until a cold front moves through Sunday evening.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
will occur. Continue to check weather.Gov/Reno/fire for updates.
