1889 -- 125 years ago: Ben Eden purchased the Union Meat Market at 207 20th St.
1914 -- 100 years ago: Washington dispatches declared the bad effects of war upon trade had ended, a restoration of credit balance with Europe relieving the situation.
1939 -- 75 years ago: The maintenance foreman on the Iowa Illinois Memorial Bridge between Moline and Bettendorf lost his life when he slipped and fell into the Mississippi River.
1964 -- 50 years ago: The Black Hawk College Board of Education last night formally expressed appreciation for a proposed gift of 44 acres of land for a building site but could not take any other action until after a Nov. 24 stockholders meeting of the donor company.
