Winter Storm Watch Statement as of 3:45 PM MDT on October 10, 2008

... Winter Storm Watch in effect from Saturday afternoon through
Sunday afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City has issued a
Winter Storm Watch... which is in effect from Saturday afternoon
through Sunday afternoon. This Winter Storm Watch is in effect for
the Cache Valley... the Wasatch front... and the valleys of west
central Utah.

Snowfall totals of 2 to 5 inches... with higher amounts east of the
Great Salt Lake... will be possible between Saturday afternoon and
Sunday afternoon. Although snow amounts may not be exceptionally
heavy... the wet snow falling on trees that have yet to lose their
leaves may result in tree damage and localized power outages.

Rain is expected to spread into the western valleys Saturday
morning before changing over to snow on Saturday afternoon. The
snow will continue... possibly heavy at times..into the day on
Sunday. At this time the greatest threat appears to be east of the
Great Salt Lake where lake effect snow may enhance the
accumulations Saturday and Sunday. The precipitation is expected
to diminish by late in the day on Sunday.

A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for heavy snow...
sleet... freezing rain and/or strong winds. Continue to monitor the

... Winter-like storm to hit region this weekend...

An unseasonably cold storm system will impact the Great Basin this
weekend. Snow levels will drop to the valley floors of western Utah
through the day Saturday... with the exception of the St. George.
Snow will continue in many areas overnight Saturday and into Sunday.
Though snow amounts may not be significant in the lower
elevations... even minor amounts of snow can be hazardous when
accumulating on trees that have not yet lost their leaves. Snow
accumulations could be substantial in many mountain
locations... particularly in northern Utah.

Temperatures over the weekend will also be 20 to 25 degrees below
normal across much of the region. This will allow for a hard
freeze across most valley locations across Utah... including the
Wasatch front... both Saturday night and Sunday night... with the
exception of the St George and Lake Powell areas.

Those participating in outdoor activities this weekend should
prepare for adverse weather conditions... especially if venturing
into the high country.
