SAN FRANCISCO, April 18, 2012 - Weather Underground announced today the availability of pushed weather notifications and severe weather alerts on the latest version of its popular iPhone Application. Weather Underground version 1.2 is now available for free in the iTunes App Store.

Early indications suggest the US will encounter a particularly active tornado season over the coming months so the ability to receive severe weather alerts via pushed notifications is an invaluable and potentially life-saving feature. The new App also leverages a new feature of the iOS 5 operating system by enabling users to share alerts and weather forecasts via the App’s Twitter integration.

“Receiving the latest severe weather alerts directly to your mobile can be critical during severe weather events, when access to the traditional web may be restricted,” said Alan Steremberg, President and co-founder of Weather Underground. “This is why we made the decision to make this vital service free to all iPhone users.”

Other features of the Weather Underground App that are pertinent to severe weather situations include live streaming of National Weather Service radio and access to’s hurricane maps. “Push notifications are just one of many new features in the product pipeline for our iPhone App so users can look forward to many new enhancements over the coming months,” continues Steremberg.

Since launching in December 2012, the Weather Underground iPhone App has been downloaded by half a million iPhone users across the world. There is also the opportunity to turn off advertisements via an in-App purchase of $1.99 per year.
