Weather Underground Launches Redesigned Website and Revolutionary Forecasting Technology

New website focuses on the innovation delivery of weather information and the advancement of weather forecasting

SAN FRANCISCO, February 2, 2011 - Weather Underground, the nation’s first online weather service, announced today the launch of the company’s redesigned website,, and the availability of its new proprietary forecasting model, BestForecast.

The redesign signals the company’s commitment to provide consumers with the most comprehensive and reliable weather information possible. Content delivery has been streamlined across the entire platform and a new site architecture enhances accessibility to the industry’s leading weather content.

“Since inventing the online weather category in 1995, Weather Underground has been the unrivaled destination for passionate weather enthusiasts,” said Alan Steremberg, President of Weather Underground. “Through the redesign we’ve created a more intuitive user interface to better deliver our weather information to an even wider audience, while remaining true to the scientific principles upon which the site was founded.”

The launch of the redesigned also marks the availability of the company’s new revolutionary forecasting technology, BestForecast. Utilizing Weather Underground’s network of personal weather stations (the largest in the world), BestForecast provides the industry’s most localized weather forecasts by incorporating data from each of the company’s 19,000 plus stations. The new proprietary forecasting system also allows Weather Underground to provide its users with unprecedented levels of transparency by publishing the recent accuracy of its forecasts for each location.

“Weather forecasting is not an exact science so to improve the accuracy of forecast data one has to understand existing error levels. The only way to do this is to cross-verify forecasts with the actual weather conditions,” said Dr. Jeff Masters, Chief Meteorologist and co-founder of Weather Underground. “Thanks to our personal weather station network we have more data points to carry out this cross-verification method. We then use what we learn to enhance the accuracy of our predictions. Assigning a quality grade to forecasts is not likely something you’ll see from our competitors, but our push for transparency is all about providing users with the best possible product. With this new technology in place we’re confident that our forecasts will prove to be the most reliable on the market.”
