A native of Taiwan, Elaine Yang has always had an interest in the weather. Elaine traveled the globe after high school and landed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to pursue her degree in Meteorology. While there she won first place in the National Collegiate Weather Forecast Contest! Having had enough of weather extremes like the tropical climates of her homeland and even colder Midwest winters, she moved to the beautiful state of California. In the summer of 1999, she joined WeatherNews Americas Inc. - a global ship routing company based in Sunnyvale, as a marine meteorologist. After five years of working in the Media and Marine Meteorology department, she headed to Weather Underground as a Senior Meteorologist and a Meteorological Developer in October of 2004. Elaine has advanced as the Lead Developer of Weather Underground's proprietary Best Forecast technology and currently oversees the continued evolution of the product. In addition, she is responsible for producing statistics for Weather Underground's forecasts to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the company's historical and climatological data. Elaine also has created various programs that are used in on the website, such as integrating 'warnings' and other data from outside 3rd party sources that enrich the Weather Underground experience. She also occasionally provides weather information for various newspapers and AP products across the country.
Elaine has always had a heart for serving the community and has played a part in the Coming Home Hospice Volunteer Program in the Castro District. Currently, she is a member of the One Brick organization, doing various volunteering work around the Bay Area. Elaine enjoys traveling, fine dining, wine, art, and jazz. She also loves the outdoors, hiking, and camping.
