Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Cold air poured into the Plains on Saturday, while snow showers developed in parts of the Northeast. A strong low pressure system that brought heavy rain to the Southern Plains and Southeast has advanced eastward and off the East Coast into the Atlantic Ocean. However, counter-clockwise flow around this system continued to push moisture into the Northeast, Great Lakes, and Ohio River Valley. In addition to cool air over the region, this allowed for snow showers to develop across Michigan and the Ohio River Valley. Snowfall accumulations ranged from 1 to 3 inches in most areas, with up to 5 inches at higher elevations of the Central Appalachians. Coastal regions remained slightly warmer, which maintained light rain showers from southern Maine through Virginia.

Behind this system, a dominant ridge of high pressure continued to build over the Plains. This system started to stretch eastward over the Mississippi Valley. Flow around this system pulled cold air in from central Canada and kept seasonable cool temperatures over the Central US. High temperatures only reached into the 30s in parts of northern Texas, while the Central and Northern Plains saw highs in the teens, with overnight lows in the negative teens.

Out West, cool conditions persisted with areas of wet weather as a trough of low pressure moved over the Pacific Northwest and into the Intermountain West and Great Basin. Rainfall totals and high elevation snow accumulation remained light. A few light rain showers extended into California as moist onshore flow persisted.

... A very cold weekend continues...

A cold front that moved through the region has ushered an Arctic air
mass into the area. As a result... temperatures have been
significantly colder and remained in the 30s at many locations this
afternoon. Strong northerly winds from 15 to 25 mph... with higher
gusts from 30 to 35 mph... will continue this afternoon and will
produce wind chill values in the 20s at most locations.

The wind will subside through the evening and temperatures will cool
rapidly after sunset. Nighttime lows will plummet into the upper
teens and lower 20s by sunrise Sunday.

Persons planning outdoor activities this afternoon and evening
should prepare for the significantly colder conditions as well as
gusty northerly winds. It may be necessary to protect plants and
pets that may be susceptible to cold... as well as pipes.

625 am CST Sat Feb 11 2012

... Very cold weekend expected as Arctic air arrives...

A cold front has moved through the region that ushered in an Arctic
airmass. This will result in significantly colder temperatures for
the arklamiss region than has been seen recently.

Temperatures today will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s areawide.
However... with the addition of north winds of 15 to 25 mph and higher
gusts... wind chills will stay mostly in the 20s all day. Winds will
subside through the evening and temperatures will plummet into the
upper teens and lower 20s by sunrise Sunday.

Persons planning outdoor activities should prepare for the
significantly colder conditions as well as the gusty northerly winds.
Actions will likely be needed to protect plants that may be
susceptible to cold... as well as pipes and pets.

154 PM CST Fri Feb 10 2012

... Very cold weekend in store as Arctic air mass arrives...

A cold front will usher an Arctic air mass into the region this
evening that will result in significantly colder temperatures for
the arklamiss region. The recent warm spell has maintained average
daily temperatures well above normal with highs frequently in the
60s and 70s over the past month or so. However a dramatic departure
in temperatures is in store beginning tonight and continuing through
the weekend.

Locations along and north of the Natchez trace will see lows drop
below freezing tonight with readings over northwest zones
plummeting into the mid 20s. Strong north wind will develop behind
the front and increasing wind speeds will produce wind chills from
10 to 15 degrees over northeast Louisiana... southeast Arkansas and
north Mississippi late tonight and early Saturday morning. During
the day Saturday the combination of Arctic air and north wind speeds
from 15 to 25 mph... with frequent higher gusts... will keep
temperatures relatively cold with afternoon highs ranging from the
mid 30s in the northwest to the mid to upper 40s in the southeast.
Wind speeds will begin to subside Saturday night... allowing
temperatures to cool quickly and drop into the teens and lower 20s
across the area by sunrise Sunday.

Persons planning outdoor activities this weekend should be prepared
for significantly colder temperatures than we have seen recently and
gusty northerly winds. Actions may be needed to protect plants that
may be susceptible to the cold.
