Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, February 10, 2012.

Expect active weather to move into the East on Friday, as a trough of low pressure moves from the Southern Plains and into the Eastern Valleys. Flow around this system will pull moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi River Valley throughout the day. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe with strong winds and heavy downpours. The northern side of this system will push a cold front into the Midwest, which will move through the Great Lakes and into the Ohio River Valley. Expect light and scattered snow showers to develop along the front as it passes through northern Michigan and into the eastern Ohio Valley and the Central Appalachians. Warmer temperatures ahead of this system will allow for rain showers to develop in parts of the Mid-Atlantic states and the Tennessee Valley.

Out West, a weak trough of low pressure moves onshore from the Pacific Ocean, bringing some moisture onshore with it. This will produce more rain and high elevation snow showers over the Pacific Northwest. Some of this moisture will stretch southward into northern California, allowing for light rain and high elevation snow showers to spread into the northern Sierras.

Wind Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:29 PM EST on February 10, 2012

... Wind Advisory in effect from 10 am to 7 PM EST Saturday...

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a Wind
Advisory... which is in effect from 10 am to 7 PM EST Saturday.

* Locations... all of north and central Georgia.

* Winds... northwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

* Timing... beginning mid-morning Saturday and lasting through
Saturday evening.

* Impacts... weak trees and tree limbs may be downed by the high
winds. Isolated power outages may occur.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory means that sustained wind speeds of at least
20 mph... or gusts to 35 mph or stronger are
expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult...
especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:39 PM EST on February 10, 2012

... Strong cold front will bring a surge of cold air to north and
central Georgia over the weekend...

An Arctic cold front will sweep through all of north and central
Georgia by early Saturday. This cold front will be followed by
sharply falling temperatures and very gusty northwest winds.

Temperatures Saturday will fall from the 30s and 40s across north
Georgia during the morning to the upper 20s and lower 30s by late
afternoon. Saturday night... temperatures will fall into the teens and
20s. Across central Georgia... morning temperatures in the 40s
and 50s will drop into the 30s and 40s by late afternoon and into the
20s Saturday night.

In addition... northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to
35 mph are also expected. Wind chill values will remain in the 20s
across north Georgia during the day... dropping into the teens and
single digits overnight. Across central Georgia... the wind chill will
fall into the 30s by late afternoon... and into the teens overnight

The predominantly warmer than normal weather so far this winter has
resulted in extremely premature budding of some Flowers and plants.
Steps should be taken to protect any vulnerable plants... as well as
outdoor pets.

Finally... a few snow showers will be possible in the north Georgia
mountains from late tonight through Saturday morning. A minor dusting
of snow will be possible in the higher elevations... mainly above
2500 feet.

Residents of north and central Georgia should continue to monitor
this upcoming winter weather event.

433 am EST Fri Feb 10 2012

... Strong cold front to bring a brief... yet significant surge of
cold air to Georgia during the weekend...

An Arctic cold front... really only the second one this entire winter
season... will sweep through all of Georgia by early Saturday. The
cold front will be followed by sharply following temperatures and
very gusty northwest winds.

Temperatures Saturday will fall from the 40s during the morning to
the 30s by late afternoon... then well into the 20s by early
Sunday... with teens possible in the far north and mountains. In
addition... northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 35
mph are also expected. These winds will combine with the sharply
falling temperatures to create significant wind chills by Saturday
evening in the teens... then dropping to near 10 early Sunday as
winds begin to diminish.

Given that this has been a very mild winter overall with only one
similar brief cold snap in early January... the wind and cold will be
more noticeable than usual. In addition... the extended warm weather
this winter has resulted in extremely premature budding of Flowers
and plants... many a month or more ahead of their normal blooming
schedule.

Finally... snow showers will be possible in the north Georgia
mountains... as well as the higher elevations of north central and
northwest Georgia Saturday into Saturday evening. A minor dusting of
snow will be possible in the higher elevations... mainly above 2500
feet... with up to 1/2 inch possible in the highest elevations.

The expected weather conditions Saturday will most certainly warrant
a Wind Advisory that will be issued later today or tonight. A Winter
Weather Advisory may also be required should snowfall in the north
Georgia mountains be more than currently anticipated. Residents of
north and central Georgia should continue to monitor this upcoming
winter weather event.
