Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Cold air poured into the Plains on Saturday, while snow showers developed in parts of the Northeast. A strong low pressure system that brought heavy rain to the Southern Plains and Southeast has advanced eastward and off the East Coast into the Atlantic Ocean. However, counter-clockwise flow around this system continued to push moisture into the Northeast, Great Lakes, and Ohio River Valley. In addition to cool air over the region, this allowed for snow showers to develop across Michigan and the Ohio River Valley. Snowfall accumulations ranged from 1 to 3 inches in most areas, with up to 5 inches at higher elevations of the Central Appalachians. Coastal regions remained slightly warmer, which maintained light rain showers from southern Maine through Virginia.

Behind this system, a dominant ridge of high pressure continued to build over the Plains. This system started to stretch eastward over the Mississippi Valley. Flow around this system pulled cold air in from central Canada and kept seasonable cool temperatures over the Central US. High temperatures only reached into the 30s in parts of northern Texas, while the Central and Northern Plains saw highs in the teens, with overnight lows in the negative teens.

Out West, cool conditions persisted with areas of wet weather as a trough of low pressure moved over the Pacific Northwest and into the Intermountain West and Great Basin. Rainfall totals and high elevation snow accumulation remained light. A few light rain showers extended into California as moist onshore flow persisted.

Wind Chill Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 1:26 PM CST on February 11, 2012

... Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect from 1 am EST /midnight
CST/ to 10 am EST /9 am CST/ Sunday...

* wind chill values... by daybreak Sunday... minimum wind chill
readings will be 16 to 18 degrees across southeast Alabama
rising modestly to the southeast to 18 to 20 degrees across much
of northwest Florida.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds
will combine to generate low wind chills. This could lead to
hypothermia if precautions are not taken. If you venture
outdoors... consider wearing a hat and gloves.

Wind Advisory, Hard Freeze Warning, Hard Freeze Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 1:36 PM CST on February 11, 2012

... Wind Advisory now in effect until 8 PM EST /7 PM CST/ this
evening...

... Hard freeze warning remains in effect from midnight EST /11 PM
CST/ tonight to 9 am EST /8 am CST/ Sunday...

... Hard freeze watch remains in effect from Sunday evening
through Monday morning...

* timing... gusty winds will continue this afternoon and diminish
this evening.

* Winds... sustained 20 to 25 mph with gusts to 30 to 35 mph during
the afternoon and subsiding to 10 mph or less this evening.

* Temperature... minimum temperatures will be in the lower to mid
20s by daybreak Sunday away from the immediate coast with
total freeze durations of up to 11 hours in southeast Alabama
and southwest Georgia and 8 to 9 hours in Florida. Another
hard freeze is expected Sunday night into Monday morning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A hard freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures below
26 degrees are imminent or highly likely and are expected to last
for at least 2 hours. These conditions will kill crops and other
sensitive vegetation.

A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds or frequent gusts of
26 to 39 mph are expected. Winds this strong can make driving
difficult... especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra
caution. Conditions will also be hazardous on area lakes.

Fire Weather Warning, Fire Weather Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:10 PM CST on February 11, 2012

... Red flag warning remains in effect until 7 PM EST /6 PM CST/
this evening...

... Red flag warning in effect from 11 am EST /10 am CST/ to 8 PM
EST /7 PM CST/ Sunday...

... Fire Weather Watch remains in effect from Monday morning
through Monday evening...

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee has issued a
red flag warning which is effect from Sunday morning through
evening... and a Fire Weather Watch... which is in effect from
Monday morning through Monday evening.

* Humidity... minimum values 25 to 30 percent today... 14 to 20 percent
on Sunday and 19 to 32 percent on Monday.

* Impacts... any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
Outdoor burning is not recommended.

* Wind... northwest 15 to 20 mph with higher gusts
today... northwest 10 to 15 mph on Sunday and southeast around 5
mph on Monday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or will shortly. Low relative humidity
will enhance fire growth potential.

A Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions
are possible. Listen for later forecasts and possible red flag
warnings.
