Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Sunday, May 27, 2012.

Tropical Storm Beryl, located about 110 miles east of Jacksonville, Florida, continued to effect the coasts of northeastern Florida and Georgia on Sunday. Beryl moved toward the west near 10 mph this afternoon, with sustained winds of 43 mph and gust to 52 mph. A westward motion was expected to continue through landfall Sunday night. Tropical storm conditions reached the coast of northeast Florida and southeastern Georgia this afternoon and were expected to continue through tonight. Dangerous surf conditions, including rip currents and storm surge effected coastal areas of northeastern Florida and Georgia, while rain spread inland. For more information on Tropical Storm Beryl, please visit http://www.wunderground.com/tropical.

Meanwhile, to the north, a deep storm from the Northwest moved into the Dakotas. The storm kicked up rain showers and high elevation snow across the Northern and Central Rockies and rain showers in North Dakota. Winter Weather Advisories remained in effect for elevations above 5,000 feet in the Northern Rockies through this evening. New snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches were anticipated across the lower elevations, with 4 to 6 inches possible for higher elevations through this evening. Moist winds from this system also supported a few light showers and thunderstorms in parts of the Northern Intermountains West and Upper Central Great Basin.

Ahead of the system, an associated warm front reached from the Northern Plains through the Lower Great Lakes. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico spread across the front and aided in producing rain and thunderstorms across northern Michigan and northwestern Pennsylvania. Behind this activity, a cold front with a wave of low pressure extended southwestward from the low and pushed across the Central Plains. Portions of the Central Plains, from northern Kansas across eastern Nebraska and northwestern Iowa and southwestern Minnesota were at moderate risk of severe weather development. The main concerns with severe storms in these areas were large hail events, damaging wind gusts, and possible tornadoes. A slight risk of severe development surrounded the moderate risk area from the Southern and Central Plains into the Upper Great Lakes. Parts of northeastern Ohio to extreme western New York were also at slight risk of severe weather development with damaging winds and heavy rainfall.

Areal Flood Watch, Coastal Hazard Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 7:19 PM EDT on May 27, 2012

... Flood Watch remains in effect through Tuesday morning...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of northeast Florida and southeast Georgia.

* Through Tuesday morning

* Tropical Storm Beryl will impact the area tonight... affecting
the region into Tuesday.

* Total rainfall amounts will be near 4 to 8 inches... with locally
higher amounts in a few locations possible. Isolated maximum
amounts of up to 12 inches will be possible.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.

247 PM EDT sun may 27 2012

... High rip current risk remains in effect through Monday
afternoon...

* timing... Tropical Storm Beryl will result in a high risk of rip
currents through Monday.

* Impacts... dangerous swimming conditions will exist in the surf
zone. Large breakers can knock you down and make you
susceptible to rip currents. Stay out of the water until
conditions improve.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards and the beach
patrol. Pay attention to flags and posted signs.

If you become caught in a rip current... do not panic. Remain calm
and begin to swim parallel to shore. Once you are away from the
force of the rip current... begin to swim back to the beach. Do
not attempt to swim directly against a rip current. Even a strong
swimmer can become exhausted quickly.

Tropical Storm Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 8:28 PM EDT on May 27, 2012

... Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect...

... Precautionary/preparedness actions...
precautionary/preparedness actions...

Final preparations to protect life and property should be
completed before conditions deteriorate. The onset of gusty winds
and heavy rains can cause outside activities to become dangerous.
Secure loose outdoor objects which can be blown around. If you
live in a Mobile home... leave it for more substantial shelter.

... Probability of tropical storm/hurricane conditions...
the chance for hurricane conditions at this time is very small.
Also... the chance for tropical storm conditions at this time is
up to 99 percent.

... Winds...
as Tropical Storm Beryl approaches... sustained tropical storm
force winds are expected to begin early this evening. Maximum
winds are forecast to be in the 35 to 50 mph range with gusts to
hurricane force possible mainly along the coast.

Minor damage may occur to older Mobile homes. Residents should
move loose items indoors... such as garbage cans and outdoor
furniture... as they will be blown around. Newly planted or Young
trees and shrubs may be uprooted if not secured properly.
Scattered power outages will be possible.

... Storm surge and storm tide...
as Tropical Storm Beryl approaches the coast... there is an
increasing chance for combined storm surge and astronomical tide
waters up to 4 feet above mean sea level within the surge zone
from about Saint Augustine northward to Brunswick. Higher levels
will be experienced in the estuary system in these areas as well...
south of Saint Augustine mainly in the 1 to 3 foot range. Storm
tide values will be highest near and north of the center of storm
landfall.

The locations most likely to realize the greatest coastal
flooding will be along the beaches and intracoastal waterways as
well as estuaries and inlets. Elevated water levels will start
tonight and continue Monday.

San Marco and Riverside... as Beryl moves west of the St Johns
River later tonight winds will become southerly which will push
water northward into downtown Jacksonville. With heavy rainfall
and river flooding it is likely San Marco and Riverside areas will
experience flooding tonight. Depending upon the strength of the
wind it is possible this flooding may approach The Levels during
Tropical Storm Fay. Do not drive into flood waters and stay away
from bulkheads and docks.

Moderate to major beach erosion will occur... which will become
substantial if conditions extend through multiple high tides.
Several roads in flood-prone areas may be closed due to flooding.
In addition... strong rip currents and elevated surf condition
will continue tonight through Monday.

... Inland flooding...
there is a potential for locally heavy rainfall on the order of
4 to 8 inches... possibly higher in isolated locations. Rainbands
will continue to move inland tonight. Periods of heavy rainfall
are expected to continue through Tuesday due to the storm slowing
down once it makes landfall and stalling over the area. A Flood
Watch has been issued.

See the latest forecast for the latest information. Listen for
possible flood warnings for your location... and be ready to act
if flooding rains occur.

... Tornadoes...
there will be a low chance of waterspouts and tornadoes tonight
as rainbands move inland.
