Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Precipitation will spread across the East Coast on Saturday, while more rain and mountain snow showers are anticipated for parts of the West. A trough of low pressure and associated cold front continue moving eastward across the Eastern Valleys into the Eastern Seaboard. Cool temperatures to the north will allow for snow showers to develop across the Northeast and New England, while rain showers are likely over the Mid-Atlantic states. Rain showers over the Southeastern states should wind down in the early morning hours as the tail end of the system pushes offshore early in the day. Expect the New York metropolitan area to see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while the Washington D.C. area will see a messy combination of snow and freezing rain as high temperatures reach into the lower 40s.

Behind this system, a ridge of high pressure continues to build in from the Plains, pushing cold and dry air in from Canada. This allows for plenty of sunshine to spread from the Plains over the Mississippi River Valley and into the Eastern Valleys. Expect the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest to see highs in the teens again, while the Midwest will see highs in the 20s. Strong winds will accompany this system, pushing windchill values below zero in these areas. The Southern Plains will remain in the 40s on Saturday.

Out West, a trough of low pressure pushes a cold front over the Pacific Northwest and continues pulling moisture onshore with it. This will kick up more rain showers with high elevation snow showers likely in the Cascades. The tail end of the frontal boundary will sweep through California, bringing light rain showers to the coasts and interior valleys. Expect light snow showers in the Sierra Nevadas by Saturday evening.

Wind Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 9:56 AM CST on February 11, 2012

... Wind Advisory in effect until 6 PM CST this evening...

The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued a Wind
Advisory... which is in effect until 6 PM CST this evening.

* Winds... prevailing northwesterly winds around 25 mph are expected
across all of northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee
through late this afternoon. In addition to this... winds will
frequently gust to around 35 mph. Both sustained wind speeds and
gusts will be higher in elevated terrain... primarily above 1250
feet.

* Impacts... winds of this magnitude will blow around any unsecured
outdoor objects. Loose tree limbs may also be blown down... and
driving will become difficult... especially for high profile
vehicles.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds in excess of 25 mph... or
gusts in excess of 35 mph are expected. Winds this strong can make
driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra
caution. In addition... ensure all loose outdoor objects remain
secure... including patio furniture and trash cans.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 1:30 PM CST on February 11, 2012

... Dangerously low wind chills expected overnight...

A very cold Arctic air mass will continue to spread southeastward
overnight... with low temperatures falling into the 15 to 20 degree
range for most locations. The cold air temperatures... when combined
with a persistent northwest wind around 10 mph... will result in wind
chill values falling to between 8 and 12 degrees. In the higher
terrain of northeast Alabama and southern middle Tennessee...
temperatures will be colder and winds will be stronger... with wind
chills approaching zero. Anyone venturing outdoors this evening and
overnight is encouraged to prepare for dangerously low wind chills by
dressing appropriately and limiting time spent outside.

Fire Weather Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:43 PM CST on February 11, 2012

... Red flag warning in effect from 11 am to 6 PM CST Sunday for
all fire weather zones in northern Alabama for 4 or more
consecutive hours of relative humidity at or below 25 percent...

The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued a red flag
warning... which is in effect from 11 am to 6 PM CST Sunday. This
warning replaces the Fire Weather Watch that was previously in
effect.

* Affected areas: Lauderdale... Colbert... Franklin al... Lawrence...
Limestone... Madison... Morgan... Marshall... Jackson... DeKalb...
and Cullman counties.

* Timing: Sunday afternoon.

* Relative humidity: values will fall into the 20-25 percent range
for around five hours on Sunday afternoon.

* Impacts: a dry Arctic air mass will persist across northern Alabama
on Sunday... resulting in critical fire weather conditions.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or will shortly. Low relative humidity
over a prolonged period will increase fire growth potential.
