Active Advisory: Special Statement (US Severe Weather) Active Notice: Record Report
Tropical Weather: Tropical Depression Alberto (North Atlantic) Tropical Storm Bud (East Pacific) Tropical Storm Sanvu (Western Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Tuesday, May 22, 2012.

Tropical Storm Alberto is expected to weaken to tropical depression strength on Tuesday as it accelerates northeastward through the western Atlantic Ocean. This system is expected to continue on a northeastward track through Wednesday and dissipate by Thursday. For more information on Tropical Storm Alberto and other tropical activity, please visit http://www.wunderground.com/tropical.

Meanwhile, a cold front pushing across the Eastern Valleys will reach the Eastern Seaboard with more unsettled weather activity. The front will stir up scattered showers and thunderstorms from portions of the Lower Great Lakes and Northeast southward into the Southeast and Central Gulf Coast states through the day. Areas along the Gulf Coast and across much of Florida and Texas will remain hot on Tuesday as daytime highs reach into the upper 80s and 90s.

To the west of this activity, a cold front will cross the Northwest, bringing rain showers with afternoon and evening thunderstorms to parts of the Northern Intermountain West and Northern Rockies. This frontal system will merge with another disturbance dropping out of southern Canada as it progresses eastward. Expect thunderstorm activity to spread into the Northern Plains ahead of this system. Storms in this region may turn severe with very large hail and damaging wind gusts. Meanwhile, a stronger front from the Pacific will reach the Pacific Northwest with a cooler airmass and precipitation.

Elsewhere in the West, temperatures across the Desert Southwest will climb into the 100 to near 110 degree range on Tuesday.

... A major change to colder and unsettled weather is expected for
the second half of the week...

A strong cold front will blast east across the area on Tuesday
bringing widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms to the
northern mountains with gradually lowering snow levels. This cold
front is just the first in a series of storm systems expected to
impact the area into the Memorial Day weekend. A major storm system
may take shape Friday into Friday night as a large low pressure
system strengthens over the Great Basin leading to widespread valley
rain and mountain snowfall... especially across central Wyoming.

The northern mountains... including Yellowstone National Park... will
be most impacted initially as some snow will develop over the
higher peaks Tuesday and lower to near the valley floor across the
northwest Tuesday night. It will remain cool and unsettled in the
northern mountains Wednesday through Thursday with periods of light
rain at the lowest elevations with some occasional light snow in
the mountains. Some heavier snow is possible in the northwest
mountains Thursday afternoon through Thursday night.

By early Friday... the potential for a significant storm system will
start to take shape for areas east of The Divide. Widespread
moderate to locally heavy rain may develop over the central basins
with heavy wet snow in the nearby foothills and mountains. Some
light to locally moderate snow will continue in Yellowstone National
Park... the absarokas and bighorns also.

The storm system is then expected to gradually lift northward into
Montana Saturday into Sunday. Cold Valley rain and mountain snow will
continue across the northern mountains... including Yellowstone
National Park through Saturday. Temperatures will start to recover on
Sunday in the northern mountains but it will still remain quite
unsettled in Yellowstone National Park on Sunday with light valley
rain and higher elevation snow showers.

Memorial Day looks much drier with more seasonable temperatures.

Travellers and those with outdoor plans should monitor the latest
forecasts from the National Weather Service on this expected major
change to colder and unsettled weather beginning in the northwest
Tuesday and spreading across all of the area for the second half of
the week into the Memorial Day weekend. Significant snowfall may
accumulate in the central and northern mountains during this
timeframe. The latest forecast can be found at
