Public Information Statement
Statement as of 12:16 PM MDT on May 13, 2008
... New drought statement product...
The National Weather Service in Rapid City South Dakota will begin using a new product identifier for drought information statements. Starting June 10 2008... drought information will be issued under the identifier fsddgtunr or axus73 kunr instead of the hydrologic outlook product fsdesfunr/fgus73 kunr. Customers who want to receive the new drought statements need to add the communications identifier to their databases.
The drought information statement will be issued as needed to provide a complete summary of current drought severity... indices... data... impacts... forecasts... and other pertinent information to allow users to focus drought mitigation efforts.
The U.S. Drought monitor will be the primary criteria used in determining when a drought statement is issued. An initial statement will be issued when the U.S. Drought monitor indicates a drought intensity of d2... severe drought... or worse in any portion of western South Dakota or northeastern Wyoming. The dgt will be updated at least once a month with more frequent updates when drought conditions change... or as long as any areas remain in drought intensity d2 or worse.
The information in the drought statement can also be found on the Rapid City National Weather Service web site: http://weather.Gov/rapidcity then click on drought in the Left Hand menu.
