Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, February 10, 2012.

Expect active weather to move into the East on Friday, as a trough of low pressure moves from the Southern Plains and into the Eastern Valleys. Flow around this system will pull moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi River Valley throughout the day. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe with strong winds and heavy downpours. The northern side of this system will push a cold front into the Midwest, which will move through the Great Lakes and into the Ohio River Valley. Expect light and scattered snow showers to develop along the front as it passes through northern Michigan and into the eastern Ohio Valley and the Central Appalachians. Warmer temperatures ahead of this system will allow for rain showers to develop in parts of the Mid-Atlantic states and the Tennessee Valley.

Out West, a weak trough of low pressure moves onshore from the Pacific Ocean, bringing some moisture onshore with it. This will produce more rain and high elevation snow showers over the Pacific Northwest. Some of this moisture will stretch southward into northern California, allowing for light rain and high elevation snow showers to spread into the northern Sierras.

Nowcast as of 10:30 am CST on February 10, 2012
Snow continues across southern Wisconsin...with the heaviest snowfall rates observed east of Madison. In this area...accumulation this morning will generally be 2 to 3 inches. At 1030 am...a band bringing a burst of heavy snow and strong wind gusts extended from near Madison to the north Milwaukee suburbs. This band was moving south at about 20 mph...affecting the Milwaukee...and Waukesha areas around 11 am. By 1130 am...the band will be near Whitewater...and Racine. West of Madison...total accumulation will be 1 inch or less. Expect snowfall to continue through early afternoon...gradually tapering off from north to south. However...lake effect snow showers are likely to affect far southeast Wisconsin this afternoon. The snow will cause significantly reduced visibilities and slippery conditions on area roadways. Travel with extra caution.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 9:55 AM CST on February 10, 2012

... A period of moderate to heavy snow and blowing snow today...

A band of moderate to heavy snow along an Arctic front will affect
southeast Wisconsin from late this morning through the middle of
the afternoon. Northeast winds will gust to 35 to 40 mph with the
initial arrival of the cold front and snow... and the blowing snow
will produce brief whiteout conditions. Roads will become snow
covered and hazardous. Snow accumulations will range from 2 to 3
inches by the middle of the afternoon with lesser amounts over
south central Wisconsin.

This burst of snow and wind will make for hazardous travel over
the Milwaukee metropolitan area by late morning and through the
afternoon. The heaviest snow and greatest wind will occur around
the middle of the day.
