Tropical Weather: Tropical Storm Alberto (North Atlantic) Invest 92 (East Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, May 20, 2012. The tropical season got off to a bit of an early start on Saturday as a tropical disturbance off the Carolina Coast became Tropical Storm Alberto. The storm is expected to slowly make its way up the eastern seaboard over the next couple of days, possibly skirting the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Rain and thunderstorms could make their way to the Mid-Atlantic coast as the storm moves northeastward. For more information on this storm, please see http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/.

Meanwhile, a cold front will move through the Plains on its way into the Upper Midwest and Mississippi Valley. This front will provide rain and thunderstorms from Oklahoma through Michigan. Some of these thunderstorms could turn severe, so residents in the Plains should stay on alert for any thunderstorm development in their area. Cool air will spill into the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest behind this front, bringing cool overnight temperatures to the Dakotas and Minnesota.

Also, mostly sunny skies are expected for California and the Southwest, making for nice viewing conditions for the solar eclipse. The eclipse will begin just after 5:00 p.m. Pacific time, and should be able to be viewed from California through western Texas.

The Northeast will rise into the 70s and 80s, while the Southeast will see temperatures in the 80s and 90s. The Mississippi Valley will also rise into the 80s and 90s, while the Southwest will see temperatures in the 90s and 100s.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:45 AM PDT on May 20, 2012

... A frontal system followed by an upper trough will bring a
transition to cool wet weather early this week...

A warm front will move through western Washington today... with
light rain over much of the area. A stronger cold front will move
through on Monday... bringing a soaking rainfall and breezy to
locally windy conditions. An upper trough will follow the front
Monday night and Tuesday for cool and showery weather.

The change to the weather pattern will be most significant in the
mountains. The snow level will be in the 6500 to 8000 foot range
today through Monday. Precipitation amounts of a half to one and
a half inches are likely... with most of that occurring on Monday.

The snow level will fall in the wake of the cold front Monday
night and be near 4000 feet Tuesday and Tuesday night. Another one
half to one and half inches of precipitation is likely Monday
night through Tuesday night. The higher mountain highways will
have some snowfall at times... but significant snowfall
accumulation on the roadways is unlikely.

People planning to venture into the backcountry should expect much
cooler conditions with rain and snow. Significant snowfall
accumulations are likely above 6000 feet... especially on the
volcanoes.
