At 7 PM...satellite imagery and National Weather Service Doppler radar shows some thunderstorm activity developing over central portions of western Washington. The activity appears to be forming north of a line from Mount Rainier to north of Hoquiam and south of a line from northern Snohomish County through the Strait of Juan de Fuca. While the mid levels of the atmosphere are quite unstable...the lower levels are quite dry. So any rain that falls from the clouds will evaporate before hitting the ground. However...these developing cells are producing cloud to ground and cloud to cloud lightning. The lightning is being produced by high-based and rather shallow clouds. This is an uncommon occurrence over western Washington. Lightning is a killer. If you see lightning or hear thunder...move indoors.
