Forecast for West Slopes Northern Cascades and Passes

Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 6 am PST Tuesday...
Tonight
.rain and snow...with occasional freezing rain in and near the passes. Snow level 5500 feet...except near the surface in the passes. Snow accumulation up to 4 to 8 inches. Southeast wind in the passes 10 to 20 mph.
Tuesday
Breezy. Rain and snow. Snow level lowering to 3000 feet. Snow accumulation 2 to 5 inches. Afternoon pass temperatures in the 30s. Southwest wind in the passes 15 to 25 mph.

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for a mix of snow... rain... and freezing rain in the Cascades... which is in effect until 6 am PST Tuesday.
Snow and freezing rain will be mainly limited to the passes and approaches to the passes tonight. Precipitation will fall mainly as rain eslewhere in the Cascades... which could be quite heavy at times.
Snow has been falling at Stevens Pass most of the day... with 9 inches of new snow since this morning. Another 4 to 8 inches of snow is likely there tonight... but it could occasionally switch to rain or freezing rain.
Mixed precipitation... falling heavily at times... will also affect highways over Snoqualmie Pass and in the vicintiy of Mount Baker and Mount Rainier tonight. In addition... an avalanche warning remains in effect for the north Cascades.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
People travelling in the Cascades tonight should be prepared for slippery roads... poor visibility... and generally difficult driving conditions. Please exercise caution accordingly.
Flood Warning

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a
* Flood Warning for the stillaguamish river at Arlington * from this evening to Tuesday evening. * At 6:09 PM Monday the stage was 11.6 feet. * Flood stage is 14.0 feet. * Minor flooding is forecast. * Forecast... the river will rise above flood stage around 12 am Tuesday and crest near 14.6 feet around 4 am Tuesday. The river will fall below flood stage late Tuesday morning. * Impact... at 14.0 feet... the stillaguamish river will locally spill over its banks. Minor flooding around Silvana will occur... including over Pioneer Highway. A stage of 14 feet on the stillaguamish river corresponds roughly to phase 2 in the Snohomish County flood program.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Do not drive cars... vans... or trucks through flooded areas... this is the cause of most flood related deaths in Washington. Be alert for rapid changes and monitor developments by listening to NOAA Weather Radio or other local media.

* Flood Warning for the South Fork stillaguamish river near Granite Falls * from this evening to Tuesday morning. * At 6:00 PM Monday the stage was 13.0 feet. * Flood stage is 14.0 feet. * Minor flooding is forecast. * Forecast... the river will rise above flood stage around 10 PM Monday and crest near 14.1 feet around 1 am Tuesday. The river will fall below flood stage Tuesday morning. * Impact... at 14.0 feet... the South Fork stillaguamish river will cause flooding along the river and tributaries. A stage of 14 feet corresponds to phase 2 in the Snohomish County Flood Warning system.

The Flood Watch continues for
* portions of western Washington... including the following counties... Grays Harbor... Clallam... Jefferson... Skagit... Whatcom... Lewis... Mason... Snohomish... Thurston.
* Through Wednesday morning
* heavy rain in the Olympics drove several rivers above flood stage today. More rivers could flood tonight as heavy rain continues. The Chehalis river and its tributaries could experience minor flooding late tonight or Tuesday... but flooding is not yet certain on most of the river.
* The Nooksack river in Whatcom County cloud also flood. If flooding does develop on the Nooksack river it would most likely occur Tuesday morning. The Skagit River in Skagit County and the stillaguamish river in Snohomish County could also have minor flooding.

A Flood Watch means conditions are favorable for flooding but flooding is not imminent or occurring. Monitor the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service and be ready to act quickly if flooding is observed or a warning is issued.
