Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, May 24, 2013.

Showers and thunderstorms will move into the Plains, while also continuing across the East Coast on Friday. A low pressure system over the Rocky Mountains will persist on its eastward track and move into the Plains. Flow around this system will create northward flow, pulling abundant moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will allow for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop across the Southern Plains again on Friday, spreading northward through the Central and Northern Plains. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe across northeastern Colorado, into western Kansas and Nebraska. Large hail and strong winds are likely in these areas, with possibly a tornado or two.

Meanwhile in the East, a trough of low pressure and associated cold front will slowly move eastward and offshore the East Coast on Friday. This system will allow for showers and thunderstorms to persist from the Mid-Atlantic states through Maine. Severe thunderstorms are not likely in these areas, but periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds will persist as this system lingers over the Northeast through Friday night.

Out West, an area of low pressure continues spinning over the Pacific Northwest, maintaining onshore flow. This will bring more rain showers to Oregon and Washington, with snow showers possible at highest elevations.

Flash Flood Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 10:34 PM EDT on May 23, 2013

... A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 300 am EDT for
Chittenden and western LaMoille counties...

Flash flooding was reported... and there are numerous Road washouts
and closures.

Areas that have been particularly hard hit include
Jericho... Underhill... and Cambridge. Avoid travel in these towns.
Road washouts may not be marked by town emergency crews... and flood
damage is very hard to recognize at night.

As this flood event progresses... flooding will continue downstream
on the Browns river through Westford... as well as on the LaMoille
through Jeffersonville... Cambridge... and Fairfax.

If you encounter flooding... seek higher ground immediately. When you
can do so safely please report any flooding to the National Weather
Service by calling toll free... 1 800 8 6 3 4 2 7 9... or by submitting
a storm report at weather.Gov/Burlington.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding. Do not try to drive through floodwaters... the
Road may be washed away beneath the water and you could be swept
away.

This is a life threatening situation. Be especially alert for sudden
and rapid rises of small creeks and streams... and be ready to move to
higher ground if you observe flooding or are directed to evacuate by
emergency officials. Never try to walk or drive across a flooded
Road... if your vehicle becomes stranded abandon it immediately and
move to higher ground.

A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring...
and immediate action must be taken to protect life and property.

Flash Flood Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:12 PM EDT on May 23, 2013

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday morning...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of northern New York and Vermont... including the
following areas... in northern New York... eastern Clinton...
eastern Essex... southeastern St. Lawrence... southern
Franklin... western Clinton and western Essex. In Vermont...
Caledonia... eastern Addison... eastern Chittenden... eastern
Franklin... eastern Rutland... Essex... Grand Isle... LaMoille...
Orange... Orleans... Washington... western Addison... western
Chittenden... western Franklin... western Rutland and Windsor.

* Through Friday morning

* thunderstorms this evening and tonight will have the potential
to produce rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour. These storms
will be training... or moving over the same area... and this will
increase the threat for flash flooding.

* Flash flooding can occur quickly... thus roads can flood in a
very short period of time. Small rivers and streams can also
rise rapidly... and culverts can fill up or become blocked by
debris quickly. All of these situations can lead to flooding in
a short period of time and create locally dangerous conditions.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.
