The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of North Carolina and southwest Virginia... including
the following areas... in North Carolina... Alleghany NC...
Ashe... Surry... Watauga... Wilkes and Yadkin. In southwest
Virginia... Carroll... Floyd and Grayson.

* Through late tonight

* periods of moderate to heavy rain are expected tonight. Total
additional rainfall amounts overnight of 1.0 to 2.0 inches are
expected.

* The additional moderate to heavy rainfall may cause flooding of
creeks and small streams.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts. You should monitor later forecasts and be
alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to
flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding
develop.

... Moderate to occasionally heavy rain across the area this evening...

At 610 PM... National Weather Service Doppler radar showed a large
area of moderate rain has developed across portions of southwest
Virginia and southeast West Virginia. Automated rain gages
indicate that this is producing rainfall rates of up to a quarter
of an inch an hour. With the ground already saturated... this
rainfall will likely produce some standing water in low lying and
poor drainage areas. Motorists should watch for ponded water on
the roads this evening.
