... Winter Storm Warning in effect until 5 am EST Wednesday...

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Winter
Storm Warning for heavy snow and sleet which is in effect until 5
am EST Wednesday. The Winter Weather Advisory is no longer in
effect.


* Snow will continue this morning... becoming mixed with sleet by
midday.

* 3 to 5 inches of snow and sleet are expected.

* Strong gusty winds later tonight will also produce blowing
snow and wind chills around zero... especially at higher
elevations.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of
snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in
an emergency. If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight...
food... and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

... High Wind Warning in effect from midnight tonight to 5 am EST
Thursday...

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a High Wind
Warning... which is in effect from midnight tonight to 5 am EST
Thursday. The high wind watch is no longer in effect.

Sustained northwest winds will increase to between 20 and 35 mph
late tonight with gusts to 55 or 65 mph... as an Arctic cold front
crosses the region. Wind gusts to 65 mph or stronger can occur
across the highest elevations. Strong winds are most likely with
the frontal passage tonight... and then again during the day
Wednesday... especially as clearing occurs through the New River
valley and the Blue Ridge.

Winds of this strength alone can knock down trees... power lines
and weak structures. However wintry precipitation accumulating on
trees and power lines through Wednesday night will make this
occurrence even more likely.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected
or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts
of 58 mph are likely to cause sporadic power outages... fallen
trees... minor property damage... and dangerous driving conditions
for high profile vehicles. Residents should move unfastened
items... such as garbage cans and deck furniture... indoors.
